Specimen Preparation A. 150 x 150 mm slab stock, 1.9 + .I3 mm thick per ASTM D 15 1. Prepare three tensile specimens from on

、e flat vulcanized sheet using Die C per ASTM D 412. Remove 6.4 mm from each end to a total length of 100 mm. Punch 1.5 - 1.8 mm hole approximately 5 mm from both ends to permit assembly on wire hanger. Note: In instances when part configuration does not permit the use of Die C, Die D may be used and

、 the die type referenced. 2. Prepare three volume specimens from same sheet as in Step 1 above using a 25 x 50 mm die cutter per ASTM D 471. Punch 1.6 - 1.8 mm hole approximately 5 mm from one end to permit assembly on wire hanger. 3. Volume of each tensile specimen is approximately 2.8 cm3 and each

、 volume specimen is approximately 2.5 cm3. This total volume of three tensile plus three volume specimens is approximately 16 cm3. B. Large diameter hoses such as upper and lower radiator hoses 1. Separate tube from remainder of hose. Lay flat and buff smooth to remove braid marks per ASTM D 15. 2.

、Prepare three tensile and three volume specimens from same section of hose as in Section A above. C. Small diameter hoses such as heater hoses 1. Separate tube per Section B-I above. 2. Prepare three tensile and three volume specimens from consecutive lengths of hose as in Section A. Page 3 of 7 Cop

、ynght02001, Ford Global Technologies, Inc FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BP 008-05 D. Automotive parts such as water pump seal boots 1. A minimum of three parts shall be selected and sectioned if necessary to obtain a total volume of 16 +/- 1 cm3 (equivalent to the volume of three tensile and three vol

、ume specimens). If the volume of these three parts are below 15 cm3, additional parts may be added or the volume of solution used may be reduced proportionately and tested in alternate containers as described in Procedure, Part B, below. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated her

、ein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 OC and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure A. For three tensile and three volume specimens 1. Prepare an exact amou

、nt of solution for each test, introducing the constituents directly into the boiling flask as follows: ESE-M97B18-C, long life coolant concentrate Distilled water ESE-M7C32-A or M589B (Sunoco Emulsifying oil only), petroleum base soluble oil 900 mL total solution must be used Percent of coolant and

、distilled water and petroleum base oil as specified in Engineering Material Specification. Note: In some instances, reagent grade ethylene glycol may be specified and/or no oil may be specified. 900 mL test solution per 16 cm3 of specimen volume is equivalent to 56.3 mL of solution per 1 cm3 of spec

、imen. If full size specimens could not be obtained from hose samples as described above, total specimen volume must be determined and test solution volume adjusted at 56.3 mL of solution per 1 cm3 of specimen. 2. Place 5 - 6 boiling chips or glass beads on the bottom of the flask 3. Mount specimens

、on stainless steel wire specimen hanger per the cttached photograph. Separate samples as shown with 6 mm diameter glass beads at top and bottom to prevent touching and nesting. Alternate tensile specimens with volume specimens. Page 4 of 7 Copynght02001, Ford Global Technologies, Inc FORD LABORATORY

、 TEST METHOD BP 008-05 4. Lower samples into the test flask containing the agitated solution. Wire specimen holder may be extended through the reflux condenser to permit depth of immersion adjustment. Bottom of tensile specimens should be 13 mm above the boiling chips or beads. 5. Assemble reflux co

、ndenser to the flask using a suitable grease to rmintain a seal and adjust flow of cooling water through the condenser. (See photograph.) 6. Place flask on a hog plate and raise temperature of the solution to boiling. Adjust heat so that a gentle mixing boil is obtained and the condenser reflux rate

、 is 20 +/- 10 drops per minute. 7. Allow to boil per prescribed times as designated in the test or material specification 8. Cool flask and solution to 23 +/- 2 “C. 9. Once the flask and contents reach 23 +/- 2 OC, immediately remove specimens from test solution and blot dry with facial tissues. IO.

、 Weight per ASTM D 471 using a ground glass, stoppered weighing bottle. B. For irregularly shaped parts or specimens 1. Prepare as in Procedure A above with the following revisions as required. When mounting parts, separate with glass beads so that they do not touch or nest. 2. For parts or specimen

、s totalling 8 - 16 cm3 of volume: Run test in 1000 mL flask, adjusting solution size at the rate of 56.3 mL of solution per 1 cm3 of specimen volume. Solution volume 450 - 900 mL. 3. For parts or specimens totalling 4 - 8 cm3 of volume: Run in a 500 mL Erlenmeyer extraction flask with a 45/50 taper

、ground glass neck. Cover the bottom with a layer of 35 cm3 boiling chips or glass beads. Solution volume is 225 - 450 mL at the rate of 56.3 mL of solution per 1 cm3 of specimen volume. 4. For parts or specimens totalling 2 - 4 cm3 of volume: (a) Run in a 38 x 300 mm Pyrex test tube inserted into a
