2、a Cobb Size Tester to test the water absorption properties of felt type paper boards used as insulators in automobile roof panels. Apparatus Required The Cobb Size Tester is shown in Figure 1. The apparatus consists of a metal ring clamped to a rubber covered metal base plate. Water absorption is me
3、asured by clamping the ring over the test specimen, adding water and measuring the amount absorbed in a specified time. Should the sample size be smaller than required for the standard free ring, a smaller ring may be used, however, in the event of disputes, the standard ring size shall be the refer
4、ee. Oven A mechanical convection oven maintained at 158 +/ - 2 F is used to contr ol the temperature of the water during the test. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ - 5 % relative hu
5、midity for not less than 24 h pr ior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Cut five representative samples of the paper board which will fit under the metal ring between the studs of the clamps. 2. Condition the test specimens for 24 h in an atmosph
6、ere maintained at a relative humidity of 50 +/ - 2 % and a temperature of 73.4 +/ - 3.6 F. The variation in temperature alone shall not be of such magnitude as to cause a variation in relative humidity greater than that specified. 3. Weigh samples to +/ - 0.1 g. 4. Lay the specimen on the base plate
7、 of the Cobb Size Tester with the resin treated side facing up. Clamp the ring over the test specimen so that a tight waterproof joint is formed between the specimen and ring. 8、 at 158 +/ - 2 F. 6. Place the assembly in an oven for 15 minutes at 158 +/ - 2 F. 7. Pour off excess water, remove the specimen from the assembly, blot the surface of the specimen with a paper towel to remove excess surface water and weigh. 8. Report water absorbed in grams or percent as required b
9、y the material specification. Report shall also include the diameter of the exposed area, water temperature and time of water exposure. 9. Prior to the testing of additional samples and before each test, the Cobb Size Tester must be cooled to 23 +/ - 2 C. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment r
10、eferenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
