、RFACES Application This procedure is used to determine the quantity of carbonaceous material on steel surfaces. Apparatus Required Power Washer The power washer consists of an elongated tank with nozzles on both of the long sides. A pump recirculates the solution from the bottom of the tank through

、the spray nozzles at the specified pressure as required. The power washer shall be constructed so as to meet the following parameters: . Nozzle pressure: 62 - 76 kPa. . Nozzle distance from test panel: 15 - 20 cm. . Number of nozzles: 12 nozzles minimum on each side, distributed for maximum coverage

、 of the sample. The distance between adjacent nozzles should be 15 cm. . Nozzle type: Full jet number 6.5 (manufactured by Spraying Systems Co., Wheaton, IL), or equivalent. Note: A detailed print (Drawing number STD 7048) of a typical power washer unit can be obtained from Parker Division, Oxy Meta

、I or equivalent. Smaller units suitable for the test panels are acceptable. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested

、 under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Method A - Power Wash Method 1. A sample 300 mm by coil width, shall be obtained from that part of the coil (with a few inside laps removed) which corresponds to the eye of the coil in anneal. Specimens shall be obtained from this samp

、le as shown in the following illustration and evaluated for surface carbon. The sample must be free from rust, adhesives, crayon or felt pen marks, or any contaminants which may contain carbon (excluding normal protective oils). Power wash a 300 x 300 mm sample using Parco cleaner 348 from Oxy Metal Industries, per the following washing parameters: . Spray time: 58 - 62 s . Concentration: 7 - 8 g/L

、. Temperature: 60 - 70 C . Pressure: 62 - 76 kPa . Distance from the nozzle: 15 - 20 cm 3. Power rinse with tap water at 60 - 70 C for 28 - 32 s. Do not handle the steel sample with bare hands; clean rubber gloves must be used. 4. Prepare a solution of 50 % by volume HCl (concentrated, reagent grade

、) in deionized water. 5. Using clean rubber gloves, select one piece of glass fiber filter paper (Grade 934 AH, 5.5 cm - Whatman, Inc., or equivalent). 6. Wearing clean rubber gloves, completely submerge the glass fiber filter paper in the 50 % HCl solution, and proceed as follows: . Mop one side of

、 the steel sample thoroughly, using moderate uniform pressure on the filter paper. Use only one side of this filter paper. Fold filter paper on itself, with carbon side in, squeeze gently to remove excess HCl, and place in a porcelain crucible. . Select another glass fiber filter paper, completely s

、ubmerge in the 50 % HCl solution and mop the same steel surface thoroughly using moderate uniform pressure, using both sides of this second filter paper. Place the second filter paper in the same crucible. . Using clean rubber gloves prepare a blank sample by saturating the same number of filter pap

、ers (i.e., two) as used in cleaning the steel surface and completely submerge all papers in the same 50 % HCl solution. Place these filter papers in another porcelain crucible. Identify this crucible as blank. . Cover both crucibles to protect from contamination and place both crucibles in an oven a

、nd dry for 1 h at 180 +/- 3 C. 7. After drying, remove the sample and the blank filter papers from the crucibles using clean forceps. Place in ceramic combustion crucibles and analyze the sample and blank papers separately for combustion carbon in accordance with the test procedure specified by the

、manufacturer of the carbon determinator utilized. 8. The total carbon value of the sample minus the total carbon value of the blank is the final reported carbon value of the steel sample. 19、 papers should never be handled with bare hands. 2. Prior to handling the filter papers, wash the gloves with hot tap water. Wipe the glove surface with a glass fiber filter paper saturated with the 50 % HCl solution, and rinse thoroughly in cold DI water. 3. Adequate ventilation is necessary during

、 drying in view of the emission of the HCl fumes. 4. Never dry the filter paper in the same crucible used in the carbon analyzer. Method B - Vapor Degreasing Plus Power Wash Cleaning Method 1. Specimens shall be obtained as detailed in Step 1 of Method A. 2. Place the specimen in a vapor degreaser f

、or 2 minutes +/- 10 s using perchlorethylene as the solvent. 3. Using clean rubber gloves, remove specimen from the vapor degreaser and proceed immediately with Steps 2 through 8 of Method A. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
