2、le workplatforms for maintenance activities.This standard does not prevent the use of these safety devices at lessthan the standard height when warranted by local conditions. Anyquestions regarding the need for these devices at less than standardheight shall be resolved by the local safety activity.

DEFINITIONS:2.1 Portable work platform is any temporarily located elevated platformused for supporting employes in the course of maintenance or otherwork and includes telescoping platforms, tubular “knock down“ typeplatforms and locally designed and fabricated platforms includingportable scaffold
4、ing.2.2 Handrail is a horizontal rail secured to uprights and erected 42inches (1067mm) high along all open sides of the platform.2.3 Intermediate rail is usually a horizontal rail secured to uprightsand erected approximately one-half the distance between the handrailand the working platform. Angle
5、braces between the working platformand the handrail used on some types of tubular platforms may besubstituted for the intermediate rail if the equivalent protectionis provided.2.4 Toe board is a barrier placed above and flush with the edge of theplatform and secured there to guard against the fallin
6、g of material.It shall be a minimum of 4 inches (101.6mm) in vertical heightabove the platform floor.3. MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF PLATFORM BEYOND WHICH PROTECTION IS REQUIRED:3.1 Any portable maintenance platform which is greater than 3 feet(914mm) from the floor to the platform requires a handrail.3.2 Any
7、portable maintenance platform which is greater than 10 feet(3048mm) from the floor to the platform requires a toe board andintermediate rail as well as handrail.4. GOVERNMENTAL RULES AND ORDINANCES:4.1 In the event rules and regulations of a governmental agencyapplicable to a specific installation requires safety appurtenancesat a lower height, the governmental regulations shall apply. In anyinstance where government regulations are more stringent thancontained in this standard for either higher or lower platforms, thegovernment regulations shall apply.
