SCOPE The materials defined by this specification are a series of wrought chromium-manganese austenitic steels which develop optimum physical properties by appropriate solution and aging treatments. Controlle

、d forging and/or stress relieving processing may also be applicable in limited instances. 2. APPLICATION These specifications were released originally for material used for the heads of two piece exhaust valves for reciprocating engines. These materials may also be employed in one piece valve design

Under normal conditions and with appropriate approval (para 3.7) a lower graded material may be substituted by an alternative (see 4.2). 3. NOTE: Actual times and temperature may be adjusted to meet hardness and microstructural requirements and will be agreed at inception of the control plan. ENGINEERING MATERIAL

、 SPECIFICATION WSD-M1A313-A1/A5 Page 3 of 5 Copyright 2002, Ford Global Technologies, Inc. 3.3.1 Solution and Age Treatment Parts made from these materials shall be solution treated by heating to above the carbo-nitride solvus temperature and then liquid quenched at a rate sufficient to inhibit carb

、ide formation. Typical solution treatment is 1165 - 1200 C (dependent on grade) for 30 - 60 minutes at temperature. Following solution treatment, the parts shall be reheated at a temperature and for a time that will precipitation harden the material. Typical temperature is 760 - 815 C (dependent on

、grade) and time, 2 to 16 hours. 3.3.2 Forge and Stress Relief Treatment - WSD-M1A313-A4 This grade may be supplied as forged from pretreated (water quenched from 1040 - 1080 C) material or forged and stress relieved (at 750 C). Requirements para 3.4 and 3.5 hardness and microstructure still apply. 3

、.4 PART HARDNESS (Unless location and requirements otherwise specified on Engineering Drawing) (ISO 6507/1) Valve Head, min HV 272 Valve head hardness shall be measured at a position on the stem centre line at the mid-head section. 3.5 MICROSTRUCTURE At the valve head location identified in 3.4 the

、microstructure shall be essentially equiaxed austenitic grains with generally well dispersed carbides, some tendency to banding is permitted. Grain boundary forms shall be discrete and discontinuous. For extruded valves, the preferred grain size is ASTM E 112, 3-6 with some size 2, 7 and 8 permitted

、. For upset forged valves the grain size shall be sizes 7 and 8 predominantly. Grain size at or near surface may be modified locally by forging effects and shall not form part of grain size control. (ASTM E 112 intercept method shall be definitive grain size determination procedure). 3.6 CLEANLINESS

、 (ASTM A 295 and ASTM E 45, Plate III, Method A) Valve steel shall meet the minimum cleanliness requirements when tested in accordance with the above specifications.
