PURPOSE This standard is used to determine the temperature at which thermoplastics are softened when being heated. 2. SCOPE 2.1. This test method applies to determination of thermal propert

3、ies at a specified condition for thermoplastics used for automobiles. 2.2. There are four methods depending on applied load and heating rate. Method A/50: Load 9.81 N, heating rate 50/h Method A/120: Load 9.81 N, heating rate 120/h Method B/50: Load 49.5 N, heating rate 50/h Method B/120: Load 49.05

4、 N, heating rate 120/h 2.3. This standard shall not apply to materials having wide softening temperature range, such as ethyl-cellulose, soft polyvinylchloride and polyvinylidenechloride. 3. TEST PIECE 3.1. The test piece having 10 mm 10 mm area and 3 to 6.4 mm thickness shall be cut from the produc

5、t. The surface shall be flat and parallel to each other. 3.2. For the products of 6.4 mm or more in thickness, leave the one side as the initial condition and machine the other side to approx. 3mm. For the product of 3 mm or less in thickness overlap a few test pieces so that the whole thickness is

6、3 to 6.4 mm (However, not more than 3 test pieces shall be used.) 3.3. When the test specimen cannot be sampled from the product, it may be prepared especially in the specified size and thickness. 3.4. If there is no special specification, then approval sample shall be tested 3, and for routine qual

7、ity control, shall be tested, at least 1 test piece. 3.5. Sample of components or material released to this specification shall be tested for conformity with the requirements of this specification and approved by GMDAT TECHNICAL CENTER prior to comments of delivery of bulk supplies. 3.6. In the even

8、t of any intentional deviation for the requirements of this specification it is the sole, responsibility of the supplier to inform the purchaser of all such deviation. Furthermore the supplier shall submit unsolicited samples for reapproval by GMDAT TECHNICAL CENTER prior to comments of delivery of

9、bulk supplies. 3.7. 10、nology apparatus, time and temperature of test) shall have been agreed upon: Those requirements shall be specified on component drawings, etc. and shall be defined in test reports. Etc. 4. CONDITIONING Unless otherwise specified, test pieces shall be tested as delivered. And the test result can be i

11、nfluenced by test piece manufacturing conditions or test pieces can be annealed prior to the test. In this case, it shall be entered in the report. 5. APPARATUS 5.1. The needle shall be-flat ended and have circular cross section of (10.15) mm2with the flat tip and square to the axis of the needle ro

12、d. 5.2. The penetration measurement device (indicator) shall be, capable of measuring accuracy of 0.05 mm or better. 5.3. The test load contains the needle, needle rod, weight plate and weights. When the weight plate, needle rod and needle are assembled, the not load shall net exceed 100g. e.g.) Met

13、hod A: 9.81 - 10.30 N Method B: 49.05 - 49.54 N 5.4. Test errors caused by differential expansion over the intended temperature range shall not exceed 0.02 mm. For measuring the test errors, test pieces of boron silicate glass alloy steels having low coefficient of linear expansion shall be used. 5.

The immersion bath shall be placed at least 35 mm below the test piece, and the heat-transfer liquid shall be capable of adjusting the temperature at constant rate of 50/h and 120 automatically. 5.6. The heat-transfer liquid shall be stable and not decomposed within a range of the required temper

15、ature and shall not affect the test pieces. (Cracks, blisters, melting or shrinkage, etc. of the test piece) 5.7. Paraffin oil, transformer oil, glycerol, silicone oil 5.8. The temperature-measuring device shall endure the heat-transfer liquid and be installed as close as possible to the test piece

16、and be accurate to at least 0.5. 5.9. The stirrer shall be installed so that the heat-transfer liquid does not affect the test pieces. Place the prepared test piece under the needle so that the non-machined surface of the test piece faces to the needle and the needle is positioned not less than 3 mm ap

18、art from each edge of the test piece respectively. 6.2. Adjust the temperature of the heat-transfer liquid below the expected softening point by 50 to 120 approx. and dip the test apparatus into the liquid. The bulb of the thermometer shall be as close as possible to the test piece. 6.3. Pre-heat th

19、e test apparatus with the test piece, and then put the weights on the weight plate according to the method A or B. (Method A: 1000/Method B: 5000) 6.4. Rate of temperature increase shall be either 505 K/h or 120 5 K/h and uniform throughout the test. The rate of temperature shall be specified in the

20、 standard or shall be approved. (If not specified: 50/h). The stirrer shall be used so that the temperature difference of the heat-transfer liquid does not exceed 0.5 6.5. Record the temperature when the indicator reads 10.1 mm penetration. 7. EVALUATION The arithmetic mean value determined on the t

21、est piece shall be the softening temperature. When the determined temperature shows a difference of 2 or more, perform the re-test.
