4、. 1.0 APPLICATION This specification outlines the requirements for primed and/or painted metal parts used in NAVISTAR trucks, parts, and components. For painting of thermoplastic parts, see TMS-9008. For painting of FRP parts, see TMS-9005. 2.0 SCOPE This specification covers the general requirement

5、s, specific properties and performance requirements of painted metal parts, and is divided into six classes. 2.1 Restricted Chemical Substances Effective January 1, 2007, all product supplied to the requirements of this specification must comply with the requirements of the CEMS B-50 specification.

6、2.2 Finish Classification Class of finish of painted parts shall be specified on the engineering drawing. Painted parts shall meet all requirements for the specified class as described herein. 2.2.1 Note: Vendor Supplied Parts 2.2.1.1 Suffix P: When the ordered part number contains the suffix letter

7、 “P,“ it is to be supplied in the “Prime Only“ condition. The supplier is responsible to insure that the part meets the requirements for primed parts (Class 1P) as indicated in this specification. Example: Drawing P/N is 3811259C1, with TMS-9009, Class I, finish note on drawing; part number ordered

8、to 3811259P1 should be supplied to the plant primed only, to be final painted at assembly. 2.2.1.2 Suffix L: When the ordered part number contains the suffix letter “L,“ it is to be supplied “less finish” (without painting). The using NAVISTAR plant is responsible to insure conformance to the engine

9、ering requirements of the finish class specified for that part. Example: P/N 3811259C1 would be ordered from the supplier as P/N 3811259L1 if supplier is not required to provide a painted part. 2.2.2 Class I For decorative exterior parts which require excellent corrosion resistance and appearance su

10、ch as exterior portions of the cab, painted bumpers, and parts which mount to the cab. 13、as per CEMS GT-30. 2.2.3 Class IP For decorative exterior parts which require excellent corrosion resistance and appearance such as exterior portions of the cab but come in to the plant from the supplier primed only and will have the Class I topcoat applied at the respective assembly plant. (Note: T

14、his class is specified in the TMS-9009 finish stamp on the applicable drawing and not in conjunction with the ordered part number described in Section 2.2.1.1.) Note: Primed parts are generally not resistant to UV, so they shall not be stored outdoors or in sunlight prior to topcoat. 2.2.4 Class II

15、& IIA For decorative and non-decorative exterior parts that require good corrosion resistance. 2.2.4.1 Decorative: Class IIA indicates final part finish must meet corrosion resistance, as well as appearance performance requirements that include color match, gloss, and weathering/ultraviolet exposure

Decorative examples include steps, modesty panels, exhaust stack supports, fuel tanks and straps. 2.2.4.2 Non- Decorative: Examples of non-decorative Class II parts that will be topcoated are frame rails and crossmembers, fabricated brackets, clips, steering arms, pitman arms, torque rods, U-bolts

17、, disc wheels, rims, rings, spacer bars, drag links, etc. Class II parts that are not topcoated are parts that shall not be exposed to direct ultraviolet radiation, such as under hood brackets. 2.2.5 Class III & IIIA For decorative and non-decorative interior cab parts that require minimal corrosion

18、 resistance. 2.2.5.1 Decorative: Decorative interior cab parts are specified by adding the suffix A, which means part finish must meet corrosion resistance, as well as appearance performance requirements that include color match, gloss, and weathering/ultraviolet exposure. Decorative examples includ

19、e visible parts. 2.2.5.2 Non-decorative: Includes parts such as brake and clutch lever arms and mounting brackets. 2.2.6 Class IV For miscellaneous frame and chassis parts. Provides equivalent level of corrosion resistance as Class II finish, but appearance requirements are reduced. When necessary,

20、this class can be specified after assembly. Examples include front axle I-beams, axle housings and fifth-wheel assemblies. 2.2.7 Class V For engines and parts mounted to the engine such as pulleys, brackets, oil fill and dip stick tubes, etc. 2.2.8 Class VI (replaces Class VIA)* A general purpose ca

21、sting sealer which is normally applied by the foundry to iron and steel castings such as cast suspension brackets. *Casting sealer was formerly specified as either Class VI or VIA, with VIA having an additional salt spray requirement of 100 hrs. However, this was changed to require both Class VI or

22、VIA to pass the specified humidity and salt spray requirements described in Table 2. Parts with drawings specifying either Class VI or VIA must pass the requirements of Class VI described in this TMS. Class VIA is considered obsolete, and new or revised drawings must specify Class VI when requiring

23、casting sealer. 27、or Protective Coatings SSPC-VIS-2 NAVISTAR CEMS GT-5A NAVISTAR CEMS GT-6B, -6E 4.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS This specification is not intended to limit or specify the metal pretreatment or painting process, but please note that iron phosphate is not recommended for galvanized steel (or other zinc-coated

28、) or zinc die-cast substrates. Liquid or powder coat systems, thermoset acrylic, urethane, acrylics, etc., may be used providing that all requirements of this specification are met. If a chemical surface pretreatment is required, any process such as zinc phosphate or iron phosphate, acid wash prime

29、or conversion coating which provides finished parts meeting the requirements of this specification may be approved. However, Materials Engineering at the Truck Development and Technology Center must approve systems from new vendors or deviations to this specification or changes in currently approved

30、 systems. The Non-Metals Laboratory at the Truck Development and Technology Center maintains a list of currently approved painting sources. 4.1 Finish All parts, whether painted by Navistar or purchased, will be finished with paints which meet all dry film requirements of the CEMS G-5 grade specifie

31、d unless otherwise designated on the part drawing or purchase order. Classes I and IP are decorative finishes requiring a surface free from sags, runs, scratches, pits, gouges and weld spatter when viewed with the unaided eye. Classes IIA and IIIA are also decorative finishes which must be free from

32、 sags and runs and the base metal used for these classes must be free from objectionable scratches, pits, gouges and weld spatter. Surfaces of all other classes are expected to be free from excessive sags, runs and drip marks. Mating or contact surfaces of finished parts must be free of all paint de

33、fects or other defects which might prevent properly fastened joints from being achieved in assembly or retained in service. Also, threaded sections of parts or assemblies shall be protected from excessive paint buildup to insure proper assembly. 4.2 Compatibility Classes I and II finishes are often

34、recoated during vehicle assembly. 36、ent liability. 2008 by Navistar, Inc. -32 HS/Ur of CEMS G-5. Sealers used for Class VI finishes shall be in accordance with Grade -43 of CEMS G-5, Part IV and shall be compatible with Grade -32, -32HS, -32W, and -32HS/Ur enamel (per CEMS G-5, Part III). 4.3 Primed Parts (Suffix Letter “P“ located in

37、 order part number) Class I parts which are supplied to the using plant in a primed state (ordered with P part number) shall also meet the requirements for Class 1P marked with No. (1) in Tables I and II. The prime paint shall be approved by Materials Engineering at TDTC. 4.4 Color Color numbers and

No suffix will be used when full glo

40、ss is required (80 minimum) or when specifying primers and casting sealers. 41、35 5 J 10 5 M 5 - 10 4.6 Specific Requirements Performance requirements for parts furnished to this specification are shown in Tables 1 and 2. Table 3 shows performance requirements for test panels (See Test Procedures). Test panel data shall be submitted at the time painted parts from new sources a

42、re submitted for approval. 5.0 QUALITY All product supplied shall be clean and free from dirt, oils, or defects harmful to product performance. Color and texture shall be uniform and consistent with samples which were originally approved. 5.1 Qualification Engineering qualification of painting sourc

43、es is required in advance of production shipments. Suppliers shall submit samples for approval of finish, color and appearance, and performance to the Non-Metals Laboratory at TDTC. Samples shall be accompanied by test data certifying that all requirements of the specification have been met. Upon ap

44、proval, the painting source shall be added to the Approved Source list. 46、ts supplied to the requirements of this specification will be established by mutual agreement between NAVISTAR and the supplier. Unless specific exception is noted, the following characteristics, where applicable*, shall be included in the plan as features for management by statistical process contr
