、d Applicable Dates 9 MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-123 1 1. SCOPE This Standard Practice covers copper and copper alloy unions with metal-to-metal seating, in nominal sizes 1/4 through 4, with solder-joint or threaded end connections, and for use with copper water tube that is compliant with ASTM B88. In

、cluded in this Standard Practice are: a) Pressure-temperature ratings b) Abbreviations for end connections c) Size and method of designating openings of fittings d) Markings e) Materials f) Dimensions and tolerances g) Tests 2. PRESSURE-TEMPERATURE RATINGS 2.1 Ratings of Unions Unions manufactured t

、o this Standard Practice may be used for the same pressure-temperature ratings as annealed, straight, seamless ASTM B88 Type L copper water tube. 2.2 Bursting Strength The actual bursting strength of the union shall not be less than the computed bursting strength of annealed, Type L copper water tub

、e. 2.3 Rating of Solder Joint The safe working pressure-temperature rating for a solder-joint piping system is dependent not only on fitting and tube strength, but also on the composition of the solder used for the joint. Pressure-temperature ratings for solder joints are given in Annex A. 3. ABBREV

、IATIONS 3.1 The following symbols are used to designate the type of fitting end: Symbol Definition C = Solder joint fitting end made to receive copper tube diameter (female) FTG = Solder joint fitting end made to copper tube diameter (male) FPT = Internal (female) American National Standard Taper Pi

、pe Thread (NPT), as per ASME B1.20.1 MPT = External (male) American National Standard Taper Pipe Thread (NPT), as per ASME B1.20.1 4. DESCRIPTION 4.1 The complete union shall consist of three parts (1) male, (2) female, and (3) nut. Equivalent terms are itemized in Table 1. TABLE 1 Terminology of Pa

、 5. MATERIALS 5.1 Components of unions shall be made from wrought copper or cast copper alloys. 5.2 Wrought copper components shall be made from copper UNS designations C10200, C12000, or C12200, or copper alloy UNS C23000, for which allowable stresses are found in ASME B31.1 or B31.9. 5.3 Cast copp

、er alloy components shall be made to meet the requirements of ASTM B62 Alloy C83600, or the chemical and tensile requirements of ASTM B584 Alloys C83800 or C84400, and in other respects comply with the requirements of ASTM B62. 5.4 Other copper alloys may be used provided they meet the chemical requ

、irements of 60% minimum copper and provided the components produced from the copper alloy materials meet all the mechanical and corrosion resistant properties for the end purposes of the unions. 5.5 The chemical composition of the materials used shall not contain anything that inhibits the joining t

、o tube or other fittings. 5.6 The use of materials, other than those listed above in Sections 5.2 and 5.3, is the responsibility of the user. 6. SIZE 6.1 The sizes of solder-joint end connections shall correspond to the standard water tube sizes, as defined in ASTM B88. The sizes of the threaded end

、s shall correspond to nominal pipe sizes, as defined in ASME B1.20.1. 7. DESIGN 7.1 General 7.1.1 The union design and materials of construction shall be structurally suitable for the stated pressure ratings and temperature limits. Any additional metal thickness above the thickness necessary to cont

、ain pressure such as that needed for assembly stresses, stress concentrations and corrosion allowances, shall be determined by the manufacturer. 7.1.2 The complete union shall consist of male, female, and nut components. The type of joint shall be metal-to-metal seating surface with ball-to-cone, ba

、ll-to-ball, or ball-and-socket configuration. The male and female components shall be designed for external and internal NPT tapered pipe threads or as solder-joint connections. Typical designs are shown in Figure 1. 7.1.3 The wrenching section of internal threaded ends shall be polygonal, and the w

、renching section of external threaded ends shall be furnished with a polygon or flats, at the manufacturers option. 7.2 End Connections 7.2.1 Threaded pipe ends shall have taper pipe threads in accordance with ASME B1.20. 1. 7.2.2 Solder-joint ends shall conform to the dimensional requirements shown

、 in Table 3 (wrought) and Table 4 (cast). 7.3 Cast Metal Thickness 7.3.1 Dimensional variation may occur in the casting process. Pattern equipment shall be designed to produce the metal thickness given for cast components in Table 4. The minimum cast wall thickness shall not be less than 90 percent

、of the body and joint wall thickness, as shown in Table 3. 7.4 Ovality 7.4.1 Maximum ovality shall not exceed 1% of the maximum diameters shown in Table 3 (wrought) and Table 4 (cast). The average of the maximum and minimum diameters must be within the dimensions shown in the applicable Table. MSS S

、TANDARD PRACTICE SP-123 3 7.5 Hydrostatic Strength 7.5.1 As proof of design, assembled unions shall be capable of withstanding, without rupture or any leakage through the shell or sealing joint, an internal hydrostatic pressure of 112times the value given in Table 2. 7.5.2 The test fluid shall be wa

、ter, or liquids with a viscosity no greater than that of water. The test fluid temperature shall be below 100 F. The duration of the test shall be for a minimum period of one (1) minute. 7.6 Tensile Strength 7.6.1 As proof of design, assembled unions shall be capable of withstanding, without failure

、, the tensile load given in Table 2. 7.6.2 Tensile tests shall be conducted by attaching threaded bars or tubing to each end of the union, using the threaded ends provided or by brazing rod or tubing to each end of the union, using the solder joints provided. Bars or tubing are to be securely mounte

、d in a tensile testing machine using spherical seated adapters to minimize non-axial loading. Tensile loading shall be increased at a uniform rate until-failure load is attained. 8. LAYING LENGTHS 8.1 Due to widely varying manufacturing processes, meaningful laying length dimensions of unions cannot

、 be established. Consult the manufacturer for these dimensions. 9. ASSEMBLY TORQUE 9.1 It is recognized that required assembly torque is dependent upon the design characteristics of the seal. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to determine the appropriate assembly torque required to meet t

、he pressure-temperature ratings of the system. 10. TESTING 10.1 Pressure testing is not required by this Standard Practice. 11. MARKING 11.1 Each union shall be permanently marked with the manufacturers name or trademark in accordance with MSS SP-25. Marking may be omitted from any union where it ma
