、 11 MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-128 1 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice provides requirements for ductile iron gate valves with flanged, threaded, mechanical joint, and push-on end connections. 1.2 These valves are suitable within the sizes and pressure temperature ratings specified herein for genera

、l purpose service. 1.3 This Standard Practice also includes, directly or by reference, stipulations for chemical and physical properties of materials and dimensions of end connections in common use. 1.4 This Standard Practice covers ductile iron gate valves with Cold Working Pressure (CWP) and Class

、 designated ratings. 2. VALVE TYPES, CLASS, AND SIZE 2.1 Valve Types Valve types covered herein are illustrated in Figures A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, and A6 in Annex A(1). Type I Solid-Wedge, Metal-Seat Gate Valve (See Figures A1 and A2) Type II Solid-Wedge, Resilient-Seat Gate Valve (See Figures A3 and A4

、) Type III Double-Disc, Parallel Metal-Seat Gate Valve (See Figures A5 and A6) 2.2 Operation Manual valves shall be designed for non-rising stem (NRS) or outside screw and yoke (OS with stub threads conforming to ASME B1.8, or 60-degree threads approximating the stub form. Minor variations shall be

、permitted. The threads shall be precision cut or formed to fit the engaging member. b) Outside-screw and yoke stems shall be of sufficient length so as to be at least flush with the top of the yoke nut after the disc wedges have worn into their lowest position and the valve is fully closed. The desi

、gn shall be such as to prevent the wedges or disc from leaving the stem or the stem from turning during the operation of the valve. c) Non-rising stem gate valves having separate stem engaging members shall be so designed as to prevent rotation or pulling out of the disc or wedge. 5.12 Backseat When

、 a backseat is provided, repacking the valve while it is pressurized is not recommended. 5.13 Handwheels Handwheels shall be of the spoke type only. Webbed or disc type are not permissible. Handwheels shall be marked with the direction for opening the valve. 5.14 Bypass and Drain Connections Unless

、otherwise specified by the purchaser, bypass and drain connections shall be in accordance with MSS SP-45. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-128 5 6. WORKMANSHIP 6.1 Castings All castings shall be clean and sound, without defects that will impair their service. Plugging, impregnating, welding, or repairing of

、 structural defects is not permitted. 6.2 Valve Parts Valve parts shall be designed and manufacturing tolerances set so as to provide interchangeability in the product of any one manufacturer between units of the same NPS, class, type, and design, except for the individual fit of the wedge or disc i

、n the body. 7. TESTS 7.1 General A pressure test shall be made on all completed valves prior to shipment by the manufacturer. 7.2 Shell Test Valves in the partially open position with both ends sealed shall be subjected to hydrostatic or gas-test pressure of at least 1.5 times the cold working press

、ure. Double-disc gate valves may be tested between the gates in the closed position. Visible leakage through the pressure boundary walls or body-bonnet joint shall be cause for rejection. Leakage through the stem packing or stem seals shall not be cause for rejection. Test pressure shall be maintain

、ed for the duration specified in Table 3. Caution: Safety precautions must be taken when gas is used. 7.3 Hydrostatic Seat Test Valves shall be subjected to a hydrostatic seat test at not less than the rated working pressure. The test pressure shall be applied successively on each side of the closed

、 gates, and the opposite side shall be checked for leakage. As an alternative method for double-disc gate valves, the pressure may be applied inside the body or bonnet with discs closed and both sides checked for leakage. The maximum permissible leakage rate for metal-seated valves shall be 10 ml/hr

、/NPS. Leakage is not permitted for resilient-seated gate valves. Test pressure shall be maintained for the duration specified in Table 3. 7.4 Gas Seat Test At the manufacturers option, a gas seat test, at a pressure not less than 80 psi (5.5 bar), may be used in lieu of the Hydrostatic Seat Test (se

、e Section 7.3). The gas pressure shall be applied as specified for the hydrostatic seat test. The maximum permissible leakage rate for each gate seat shall be 0.1 std ft3/hr/NPS (2.8 1/hr/NPS). The pressures shall be maintained for the durations specified in Table 3. Caution: Safety precautions must

、 be taken when gas is used. 8. MARKING 8.1 Marking shall conform to MSS SP-25. 9. PAINTING 9.1 The painting of finished valves shall be optional with the manufacturer, unless otherwise specified by the purchaser. Ferrous seating-surfaces for resilient-seated gate valves shall comply with Section 5.8
