2、nts and agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers a high-melting hotmelt asphaltic compound for coating the inner walls of metal cases prior to filling with explosives. 2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 General. When specified (see 6.2), a sample (see 6.3) shal

15、l be subjected to first article inspection in accordance with 4.2. A first article inspection shall be required if: a. There has been more than 18 months since production of the latest accepted lot, b. There has been a relocation of the production facility, c. There has been a major change in person

16、nel or procedures, or d. There has been a change in the source of supplies for the materials used in the manufacture of the asphaltic compound. 3.1.2 Materials. The compound shall be an asphaltic compound. Use of a polyamide wax as an additive to adjust viscosity of the molten compound shall be perm

17、issible. The materials used in the manufacture of the asphaltic compound shall be of acceptable quality, suitable for the purpose intended, and shall be such as to produce a compound that is easily heat-liquefiable, but does not flow at temperatures slightly below the melting point. The compound sha

18、ll contain no volatile solvents. 3.1.3 Conflicting requirements. Conflicting requirements arising between this specification and any specification, publication, or inspection requirement listed herein shall be referred in writing to the procuring activity or appointed agent for interpretation, clari

19、fication, and resolution. 3.1.4 Workmanship. The asphaltic compound ingredients shall be processed in a manner that will produce the highest quality material necessary to meet the requirements of this specification. The asphaltic compound shall be homogeneous and free from grit, lumps, contaminants,

20、 or other defects that could adversely affect its intended use. The asphalt compound shall be capable of storage at ambient temperature without release or separation of any component. 3.2 Product characteristics. 3.2.1 Chemical requirements. The asphaltic compound shall conform to the chemical requi

21、rements specified in table I when tested in accordance with 4.5.1.1 through 4.5.1.5. TABLE I. Chemical requirements. The viscosity of the asphaltic compound shall be a maximum of 25 Zahn seconds at 232 2 Celsius (C) when tested in accordance with 4.5.3. Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction

The softening point of the asphaltic compound shall be within the temperature range of 172 to 205 C when tested in accordance with 4.5.4. 3.2.4 Penetration. The asphaltic compound shall show t

24、he following penetration values when tested in accordance with 4.5.5: a. 200 g/60 sec/0 C 5 - 35 b. 100 g/5 sec/25 C 5 - 35 c. 50 g/5 sec/46 C 80 max. 3.2.5 Flash point. The minimum flash point of the asphaltic compound shall be 300 C when tested in accordance with 4.5.6. 3.3 Performance requirement

25、s. 3.3.1 Heat resistance. A dried film of the asphaltic compound on a metal panel shall not sag or flow when heated by immersion in a silicone oil bath maintained at 172 1 C for 1 hour. Test procedure shall be in accordance with 4.5.7. 3.3.2 Acid resistance. A dried film of the asphaltic compound on

26、 a metal panel shall withstand the action of picric, sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids for 6 hours without disintegration, browning, or dulling. There shall be no etching of the metal underneath the compound. Test procedure shall be in accordance with 4.5.8. 3.3.3 Water resistance. A dried fi

27、lm of the asphaltic compound on a metal panel shall withstand immersion in distilled water for 18 hours without blistering, whitening, and not more than a slight dulling. Test procedure shall be in accordance with 4.5.9. 3.3.4 Flexibility. A dried film of the asphaltic compound on a metal panel shal

28、l show no chipping, scaling, or cracking when tested in accordance with 4.5.10. 3.4 Reactivity requirement. 3.4.1 Reactivity. The reactivity for the asphaltic compound in contact with H-6 (MIL-E-22267) explosive and tritonal (80 3 parts TNT, MIL-DTL-248, and 20 3 parts aluminum, MIL-DTL-512) explosi

29、ve in the vacuum stability test of 4.5.11 shall not exceed 3.0 milliliters (ml) of gas (over and above that generated by the controls). 3.5 Application - coating requirements. a. The asphaltic compound shall be suitable for application into bombs using equipment and processing techniques that provid

30、e the interior coating requirements of applicable drawings for thermally protected bombs (see 6.4.1) in one application. The applied coating shall be self-adhering and also shall adhere to surfaces coated with cavity paint, MIL-DTL-450. Any inherent separation of components of the asphaltic compound

31、 shall not affect application or coating characteristics of the material. b. The coated bombs (3.5a) shall be capable of being loaded with H-6 explosive to the requirements of applicable drawings for thermally protected bombs (see 6.4.1) without separation of the coating or other loss of coating eff

Bombs coated with the asphaltic compound (3.5a) and loaded with H-6 explosive (3.5b) shall survive the fast cookoff test of 4.5.12. The cookoff time shall be greater

33、 than 4.0 minutes. 4. VERIFICATION. 4.1 Classification of inspections. The inspection requirements specified herein are classified as follows: a. First article inspection (see 4.2) b. Conformance inspection (see 4.3) 4.2 First article inspection. The first article inspection shall consist of all the

34、 tests of this specification as described under test methods and procedures (4.5). The first article sample (4.2.1) shall meet all the requirements of this specification. The procuring activity reserves the right to accept the manufacturers certification of testing when available, in lieu of Governm

35、ent testing. 4.2.1 First article sample. The first article sample shall consist of 3000 pounds of the asphaltic compound manufactured and taken from one batch of the material. The sample shall be tested by the manufacturer or forwarded to a testing facility as directed by the procuring activity (see

36、 6.2). If the sample is to be forwarded to a testing facility, the material shall be packaged in suitable containers and shall be plainly identified by securely attached, durable labels marked with the following information: a. Compound, asphaltic, high melting, hotmelt (cavity lining) b. Formulatio

37、n and identity of additives, if any, to the asphaltic material c. Name and address of manufacturer d. Location and identity of the plant that produced the samples e. Manufacturers identification f. Date of manufacture g. Submitted by (name) (date) for first article tests in accordance with the requi

38、rements of MIL-DTL-82604. 4.2.2 Fast cookoff samples. Three bombs, coated and explosive loaded to the requirements of 3.5a and 3.5b respectively, shall be forwarded to an activity designated by the procuring activity for the fast cookoff test of 4.5.12. The procuring activity shall designate the loa

39、ding activity for preparing these samples. 4.3 Conformance inspection. For each inspection lot of material submitted for acceptance, conformance inspection shall consist of an examination for acceptability of quality control methods used by the manufacturer, an examination of filled containers (4.3.

40、3) for conformance to packaging, packing, and marking requirements, and examinations and tests of samples (4.3.2) for all the requirements of 3.1.2 through 3.3.4 of this specification. The reactivity requirement of 3.4 may be a requirement for conformance inspection if at any time during a contract

41、the procuring activity determines the material submitted under this specification to be suspect. 4.3.1 Inspection lot. An inspection lot shall consist of the same type asphaltic compound produced by one manufacturer, at one plant, from the same materials and formulation, and under essentially the sa

A 10-pound sample of asphaltic compound shall be taken at random from each lot in accordance with ASTM D 140. The sample materi

43、al shall be chosen at random from containers of “solidified“ compound. A sample for the tests of 4.5.3 through 4.5.10, herein, shall be preconditioned for testing in accordance with 4.5.2. The sample for tests of 4.5.1 need not be preconditioned. The lot shall be unacceptable if it fails to meet all

44、 the requirements of this specification, except as noted in 4.3. 4.3.2.1 Sampling. Each container shall be labeled with complete information on the lot and batch number, date of sampling, contract number, and applicable specification. 4.3.3 Sample for examination of filled containers. A random sampl

45、e of filled containers shall be selected from each lot of compound in accordance with MIL-STD-1916, Verification Level II. 4.4 Inspection procedure. 4.4.1 General. Unless otherwise specified, the values specified in section 3 apply to the results obtained from one determination for each particular t

46、est. 4.4.2 Visual examination. Conformance of the asphaltic compound to the requirement for workmanship (3.1.4) and any other requirements not covered by specific tests shall be determined by appropriate visual examination. 4.4.3 For examination, of preparation for delivery. Using the sample of fill

47、ed containers selected in 4.3.3, the sample shall be adjusted to conform to MIL-STD-1916, Verification Level II. The sample unit shall be one filled and closed shipping container. Sample containers shall be examined for compliance with all requirements of this specification in regard to contents, cl

48、osure, damaged or leaking container, improper container, and marking. 4.5 Test methods and procedures. 4.5.1 Chemical requirements. 4.5.1.1 Manganese. Weigh a 10- (g) sample of the compound, dissolve in 10 ml of concentrated nitric acid, and filter if necessary. Dilute to 100 ml with distilled water

49、 and transfer a 20 ml aliquot of the solution to a 250-ml beaker. Add 1 g of lead peroxide and boil. Note if manganese is present by the development of a red coloration in the solution. If the presence of manganese is indicated, filter through asbestos and titrate the clean filtrate with N/10 oxalic acid until the red coloration disappears. Calculate the percentage of manganese in the sample as follows: Percentage
