Standard samples, when furnished are solely for guidance and information to the contractor (see 6.3). Variation from this specification may appear in the standard sample, i

The basic material for the flag shall be cloth, banner, rayon, conforming to MIL-C-606, except regenerated cellulose (viscose or cuprammonium type) may be used. The background cloth shall be scarlet, cable No. 65006; the cloth for the globe of
14、 the emblem shall be silver gray, cable No. 70151; and the cloth for the motto ribbon and stars shall be white, cable No. 70001. The colors shall match the approved standard shades (see 6.3). The scarlet background cloth shall be 52 inches wide and the selvages shall form the top and bottom edges of
15、 the finished flag. 3.3.2 Thread. 3.3.2.1 Cotton thread. The thread for sewing the heading, the hem at the fly end, and attaching the fringe shall be cotton, mercerized, conforming to type IC2, ticket No. B, of V-T-276. As an alternate to the cotton thread, a polyester, cotton-covered thread conform
16、ing to MIL-T-43548, ticket No. 50, 3 ply or ticket No. 70, 2 ply may be used. continuous filament rayon, 600 denier, 460 yards minimum average length per ounce, 2.3 pounds minimum breaking strength. The embroidery thread when tested as specified in Section 4, Table I shall comply with the requiremen
17、ts specified herein. 3.3.2.2 Embroidery thread. Machine embroidery thread shall be 3.3.2.3 Colors. All embroidery threads shall be vat dyed, and the colors, of which there are 158 shall match the approved standard shades (see 6.3). All cotton thread and the polyester/cotton thread shall be vat dyed
18、and the colors shall match the shade of the material being sewn, except the cotton thread used in the horizontal lines on the globe shall match the approved standard shade which is identified as 0.16 Putty HCW 67197 (see Figure 1 for the location of colors). cloth, flannel, cotton, conforming to typ

20、class 2, of MIL-L-40051. 3.3.5 Frinqe. The fringe shall be 2-1/2 inch length conforming to class 2 of MIL-F-2310. 21、ign of the flag shall be the Marine Corps emblem with motto ribbon at the center of the flag and four 10-inch diameter stars of white banner cloth arranged one at each side of and one above and below the emblem. The white stars shall be appliqued with white machine embroidery thread. The motto ribbo
22、n shall be bonnaz stitched with the words “SEMPER FIDELIS“. The emblem with motto ribbon shall be accomplished using bonnaz embroidery and applique machine embroidery as shown on the standard sample. The flag shall have a tube or tunnel heading lined wth cotton flannel or sheeting and fitted with a
23、slotted leather tab at each end of the heading. The flag shall be 52 inches in the hoist, and 66 inches in the fly, with a continuous length of 2-1/2-inch-wide gold colored rayon fringe as shown on Figure 2. appliqued stars and bonnaz and appliqued emblem, with motto ribbon, shall be identical on bo

The embroidered banner cloth for the globe and motto ribbon, and the banner cloth for the stars, fQr both sides of the flag, shall be appliqued back to back, with the words “SEMPER FIDELIS“ to read from left to right on bath sides of the flag and centered on the motto ribbon from top to bcsk
27、tom; the land areas on the globe shall be in their positions on both sides of the flag. On both sides of the flag the eagle shall face the hoist end. In relation to the globe, the anchor shall point downward from the northeast quarter to the southwest quarter on the front of the flag, and from the n
28、orthwest quarter to the southeast quarter on the back of the flag, the ring and stock in the north and the crown and flukes in the south. The front of the flag shall be that side which when viewed will have the hoist end on the left and the fly end on the right. 3.4.1 Desiun application. The design

No seams shall be allowed in the background cloth other than those specified or the hem at the fly end and the heading; the hoist of th
31、e flag shall be the full width of the cloth, the selvages forming the top and bottom edges. The cloth for the globe, motto ribbon and stars for both sides of the flag shall each be cut in one piece, no seams permitted 3.5.2 Stitches, seams and stitchinq. All stitch, seam and stitching types specifie
32、d herein, except embroidery stitching, shall conform to FED-STD-751. Applique stitching of stars shall be stitch type 304, with 58 stitches per inch, throw of stitch 1/16 inch. All stitching with cotton thread shall be done with stitch type 301, not less than 12 stitches per inch. All ends of stitch
33、ing when not secured by a hem or by other stitching shall be securely backstitched for a minimum of 1/2 inch, and all thread breaks shall be securely backstitched for a minimum of 1 inch. 3.5.2.1 Embroiderv stitchinq. All embroidery stitching, except the outline stitching of the stars, motto ribbon,
34、 globe, and horizontal lines on the globe, shall be a chain and texture type of bonnaz stitching. The outline stitching of the stars, motto ribbon, globe and the horizontal lines on the globe shall be an imitation hand embroidery type of stitching. The stitch type, texture, density and colors for th
35、e various parts of the embroidery work shall conform to the standard sample. The chain type of bonnaz stitching shall be that type shown in the standard sample at the edging of the land areas on the globe, edging of the anchor, or in the wing feathers of the eagle; the textured type on bonnaz stitch
36、ing shall be that type shown in the standard sample in the large gold color areas of the continents and anchor, The imitation hand embroidery type of stitching outlining the globe and stars, and the lines on the globe shall be made with 1/8 -to 5/32 -inch-long stitches, and the stitching outlining t
37、he motto ribbon shall be made with 3/32-to 118-inch- long stitches. Each horizontal line on the globe shall have a single row of No. 16 - Putty HCW cotton thread stitched along the center of the line. Embroidery work shall not be stiff, but shall be soft and flexible in finish, and shall be done in
38、a manner to keep puckering of the cloth at a minimum. 3.5.2.2 Letter stitchinq. The letters on the motto ribbon shall be embroidered with No. 10 - Scarlet embroidery thread. The style of the letters, and the stitch type, texture and density of the embroidery work shall conform to the standard sample

The heading shall be the tube or tunnel type for the insertion of a flagstaff, and shall be made by taking a piece of cotton flannel or cott
40、on sheeting, 6 inches wide and 52-1/2 inches long, and folding it under not less than 1/4 inch at each end. This strip shall be placed on the back of the flag at the hoist end with the folded ends of the strip flush with the selvage edges of the flag at top and bottom and attached thereto by a singl
41、e row of stitching across each folded end of the strip. The tube or tunnel shall then be formed by hemming the hoist end of the flag with the lining strip inside, with 1/4 inch turned under and stitched with a double row of stitching, 1/8-inch gage, which shall pass through both the turned edges of
42、the lining strip. The flat width of the finished heading shall be 2-3/4 +1/8 inches wide. The finished heading shall be straight and of even width from top to bottom, Alternatively, the heading may be made as shown in Figure 2. 3.5.4 Leather tabs. The heading shall be fitted with a leather tab at ea
43、ch end. Each tab shall be 2-1/2 inches long and 7/8 inch wide minimum, with outer end rounded. A 1/2-inch-long slit shall be made in each tab at the vertical center and 5/8 inch from rounded end. A ll8-inch diameter hole shall be punched in the tabs at the end of the slit nearest the rounded end of
44、the tabs. The cornbined slit and hole shall measure 5L8 inch long. The tab shall be placed within the heading and centered opposite the stitching of the hem, the rounded ends of the tabs flush with ends of the heading. The tabs shall be stitched to the flag across their full width at the square end
45、by box stitching, cross stitching, triangular stitching or by any combination of the three types of stitching which will securely join the tabs to the flag. 3.5.5 m. The fly end of the flag shall be hemmed 3/16 inch using seam type EFb-1. The hem shall finish straight and paraXe1 with the heading. 3
46、.5.6 Frinqe. A continuous length of fringe specified in 3.3.5 shall be stitched to the front side of the flag at the top, fly and bottom edge, and completely around each end of the heading. The fringe shall be neatly turned at the corners of the flag and the raw ends of the fringe shall b turned und
47、er and caught in the heading stitching. The fringe shall be stitched to the flag with gold and scarlet cotton thread, gold on the front of the flag to match the fringe and scarlet on the back of the flag. The heading of the fringe at the fly end shall cover the hem. The fringe shall be evenly attach
48、ed around the flag with a single row of stitching through the center of the fringe heading. The top and bottom edges of the flag shall be hemmed with a seam comforming to type EFa-1 of FED-STD-751. Finished dimensions shall be as shown in Figure 2, except that dimensional examination for the design and scroll shall be checked by
