This specification covers metallic spiral wound gaskets for handholes and manholes of shipboard and stationary boilers. Steam generators for nuclear plants are excluded. 1.2 Classification. Gask

Metallic spiral wound gaskets furnished under this specification shall be products which are qualified for listing o
20、n the applicable qualified products list at the time set for opening of bids (see 4.3 and 6.3). 3.2 Construction. Gaskets shall be composed of a single thickness of metal wound in a flat spiral shape, starting on the inside and working outward ply by ply to the desired size. Between the plies of met
21、al shall be a cushion of filler material wound to conform with the metal strip. For class 1 and 2 gaskets, spot welds, shall be as shown on Drawing 803-5959278. 3.2.1 Dimensions and tolerances. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), gaskets shall conform to the dimensions, tolerances and other requir

(b) Corrosion-resisting steel (UNS S31603) , in accordance with ASTM A 167, type 316L, or ASTM A 240, type 316L1 (c) Corrosion-resisting steel, (UNS S30908) in accordance with ASTM A 167, type 309S, except that type 309s shall he stabilized with col
26、umbium (and tantalum not exceeding 0.10 percent) and their combination to be not less than 10 times the carbon content. 3.3.1.1 Thickness. The thickness of the metal strip shall be between 0.0063 and 0.0088 inch. 3.3.2 Filler material. The filler material shall be in paper strip form and shall be in
27、 accordance with Drawing 803-5959278. The material shall be selected for low chloride content (see 3.3.2.1). The filler material shall contain less than SOO parts per million (p/m) of zinc and shall not contain the following: (a) Grease, lead or lead components, mercury or (b) Asbestos fibers and co
28、mponents containing mercury compounds. asbestos fibers. 3.3.2.1 Chloride content of filler. The chloride content of the filler material shall meet the following requirements, when tested as specified in 4.6.2.1 and 4.6.2.2: (a) (b) Water leachable - Not greater than 220 p/m. Total chlorides - Not: g
29、reater than 550 p/m, 3.3.3 Recovered materials. Unless otherwise specified herein, material and articles incorporated in the products covered by this specification shall be new and may be fabricated using materials produced from recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable without jeopardiz
30、ing the intended use. The term “recovered materials“ means materials which have been collected or recovered from solid waste and reprocessed to become a source of raw materials, as opposed to virgin raw materials. None of the above shall be interpreted to mean that the use of used or rebuilt product

Gaskets shall be sated for service at the
32、 temperatures specified in 1.2. 3.4.2 Service condition of bearing surface. Gaskets shall be rated for service in connection with flat smooth surfaces having finishes of spiral or concentric lay of 60 to 80 serrations per inch and a roughness height rating (RHR) of 125. 3.5 Cyclic and hydrostatic te

There shall be EO visible steam or water Upon completion leakage rom the flanged joint after the first five cycles of the service test or during the hydrostatic test, when tested as specified in 4.6.3. of the tests, the gasket shall remain intact (metal strip and spot weld unbroken). 3.6 Marking

Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), gaskets shall be marked with a sturdy paper tag (of tag stock) securely attached thereto, which shall contain thereon the following information: The manufacturers name; gasket size, including shape, thickness, inside and outside dimensions; type of metal and f
35、iller material; pressure and temperature rating, national stock number, and customers order number. For class 1, at least one tag shall be applied to each 25 gaskets or less. For class 2 gaskets, each gasket shall be tagged. 3.7 Workmanship. The finished gaskets shall have no breaks, creases or shar
36、p edges. 4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS 4.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of all inspectiin requirements as specified herein. in the contract or purchase order, the contractor may use hi
37、s own or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure s
38、upplies and services conform to prescribed requirements. Except as otherwise specified 4.1.1 Responsibility for compliance. All items must meet all requirements of sections 3 and 5. The inspections set forth in this specification shall become a part of the contractors overall inspection system or qu
39、ality program. The absence of any inspection requirements in the specification shall not relieve the contractor of the responsibility of assuring that all products or supplies submitted to the Government for acceptance comply with all requirements of the contract. Sampling in quality conformance doe
40、s not authorize submission of known defective material, either indicated or actual, nor does it commit the Government to acceptance of defective material. 4.2 Classification of inspections. The inspection requirements specified herein are classified as follows: (a) Qualification inspection (see 4.3)

Qualification tests shall be conducted at a laboratory satisfactory to NAVSEA. examinations and tests s
42、pecified in 4.5 and 4.6. Contractors shall furnish a miniinuni of six representative samples for each class and series of gasket for which qualification is desired. Qualification tests shall consist of the 4.4 Quality conformance inspection. Each of the sample gaskets selected in accordance with 4.4
43、.1.2 shall be analyzed in accordance with method 111 of FED-CTD-151 to determine compliance with 4.5. If any sample fails to conform to 4.5, this shall be cause for rejection of the entire lot. 4.4.1 Sampling. 4.4.1.1 - Lot. Gaskets of the same size and series manufactured from the $ame batch of mat
44、erial and presented at one time shall be considered a lot: for purposes of examination and tests. 4.4.1.2 Sampling for examination. A random sample of gaskets shall be selected from each lot of material offered for inspection of visual and dimensional characteristics in accordance with the sampling
45、procedures of MIL-STD-105, inspection level S-4. 1.5 percent defective. Acceptable quality level (AQL) shall be 4.4.1.3 Sampling for chemical analysis. 4.4.1.3.1 Metal strip. Five feet of uncrimped metal strip representing the lot shall be forwarded to the testing facility for purposes of chemical a
46、nalysis of metal. 4.4.1.3.2 Filler. Fifty grams of the filler paper representing the lot shall be forwardbd to the testing facility for purposes of chemical analysis. 4.5 Visual and dimensional examination. Each of the sample gaskets selected in accordance with 4.4.1.2 shall be visually and dimensio
47、nally examined to verify compliance with this specification. or more defects shall not be offered for delivery, and if the number defective exceeds th acceptance number, this shall be cause for rejection of the lot repre- sented by the sample. The metal strip selected in compliance with 4.4.1.3.1 shall be analyzed in accordance with method 111 of FED-STD-151 to determine compliance with 3.3.1 and 3.3.1.1.
