2、t of Defense. I. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers the requirements for insignia (metal and embroidered) in standard and miniature sizes, along with mounts and bands as applicable for caps and hats worn by male and female personnel of the Navy and Coast Guard. 1.2 Classification. The insign
3、ia as specified on the applicable Military sheet or mounts and bands when applicable, shall be as specified (see 2.1. and 6.2). 2, APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 Issue of documents. The following documents of the issue in effect on date of invitation for bids or request for proposal, form a part of this s
4、pecification to the extent specified herein. SPECIFICATIONS Beneficial comments (recommendations, additions, deletions) and any pertinent data which may be of use in improving this document should be addressed to: Navy Clothing type III, class 2; or type IV, class 1, of ML-B-593. The braid shall be
5、dyed to match Blue Shade 3228, (NAVY) or Blue Shade 3362 (Coast Guard), as applicable, and shall finish 29 inches in length (minimum), exclusive of fraying. 6、1.5 Leatherette. The leatherette used to back metal insignia mounts, shall be either of a fabric or paper base conforming to the require- - ments specified in 3.4.1.5.1 and 3.4.1.5.2. 3.4.1.5.1 Fabric base. The leatherette shall be made of any suitable woven or knitted cotton.materia1, vinyl coated
7、and embossed with a simulated leather effect on one side only. weight of not less than 14 ounces per square yard, and shall show a minimum of “good“ fastness to crocking and water. Testing shall be performed as specified in 4.3.1. The fabric shall have a finished 3.4.1.5.2 Paper base., The leatheret
8、te shall consist of a polyvinyl chloride film bonded or laminated to a latex impregnated (30-35 percent by weight) cellulose pulpboard sheet with a suitable adhesive. The polyvinyl chloride film shall be black in color, embossed on one side only, with a finished thickness of 0.009 (2 0.0005) inches.
9、 the polyvinyl chloride film shall show a minimum of “good“ fastness to crocking and water. The latex impregnated pulpboard sheet, shall have a finished thickness of 0.030 (2 0.0015) inches. Testing shall be performed as specified in 4.3.1 In addition, 3.4.1.6 Cloth, buckram, cotton. The cotton buck

All metal insignia shall be fabricated from any of the copper alloys specified in table I, and shall conform to the applicable composition as indicated when tested as specified in 4.3.1. The copper alloy used shall be
14、roll polished, free from pits; scale (including red oxide); dents; nicks; scratches; segregations; and foreign inclusions that cannot be removed in later processing. Whe
16、n gold filled brass is specified, there shall be a sheet of not less than 1/20, 10 Karat gold affixed (front only), to the surface of a commercial copper base alloy (see 4.3.1). 3.4.5.2 Gold-plating. The gold for plating shall be 24 Karat. 3.4.6 Silver. 3.4.6.1 Sterling silver. When specified, sterl
17、ing silver insignia shall contain not less than 92.5 percent pure silver (see 4.3.1). 3.4.6.2 Silver-filled. When specified, silver-filled insignia shall be 1/20 silver-filled (front only) over a copper-base alloy. The silver shall contain not less than 92.5 percent pure silver (see 4.3.1). 6 Provid

The silver for plating shall contain not less than 99.5 percent pure silver (see 4.3.1). . 3.4.7 Solder. Solder shall be of a hard (silver alloy) compound, having a m
19、elting point of not less than 1075% degrees Fahrenheit (see 4.3.1). 3,4.8 Lacquer. The lacquer to be used in applicable processes, shall be any suitable pale and clear synthetic lacquer. lacquer shall not be permitted (see 4.3.1). The use of pigmented 3.4 Design. 3.4.1 Metal insignia. The design of
20、the metal insignia shall be of the exact replica as the Government-loaned hub when applicable or conform to guide and approved contractors samples (see 3.2 thru 3.2.2). 3.4.2 Embroidered insignia. The design of the embroidered insignia, shall be in accordance with the guide sample (see 3.2). 3.5 Con
21、struction. 3.5.5 Stamping, trimming, and piercing. When applicable, the insignia shall be struck in a manner that shall insure a well defined die-struck edge. struck outline. drag; steps; and rough edges. The stamping, trimming, and piercing operations, shall not damage or distort the design or alte
22、r the shape of the insignia. Insignia shall be trimmed, and when applicable, pierced to the die- All edges shall be clean and smooth, free from burrs; 3.5.2 Forcer. When specified on the applicable specification sheet, a forcer may be used to bring up portions of the design of metal insignia. 3.5.3
23、Attaching devices. Attaching devices for metal insignia shall be as specified in 3.5.3.1, 3.5.3.2, or on the applicable specification sheet. Material requirements shall conform to Table I. Attaching devices shall be located as specified on the applicable specification sheet and approved guide sample
24、. 3.5.3D1 Clutch fastener and prong. The prong and clutch fastener type shall be as shown in igure 1 and as specified herein. The prong shall be made of nickel silver and shall be soldered or electronically fused to the back of the insignia as specified. from any type brass. not be removable by hand

The screw pos,t shall be soldered or electronically fused to the back of the insignia as specified. 3.5.4 Soldering or electronic fusion Soldered or fused joints shall be strong, clean, smooth and free of burned or reduced areas, Soldered joints shall be free of

29、e applicable specification sheet, the backs of all insignia shall be flat. When a forcer is used to bring up the design, the impression of the forcer on the back of the insignia shall be regular, symmetrical, and leave no sharp corners or edges. 3.6 Finish Unless otherwise specified on the applicabl
30、e specification sheet, the front and edges (surfaces visible from the front) of all insignia shall be finished to match the guide or approved contrac.tors sample for color and finish (see 3.2 and 3.2.2). 3.6.1 Gold plating Gold specified in 3.4.5.2, shall be used for gold plating. Prior to plating,
31、the insignia shall be cleaned of matter that may affect the gold plating. over the entire surface, and there shall be no cut through; peeled; or blistered plattng. The base metal shall be either yellow brass or red brass specified in 3.4.4.1 or as specified on the applicable specification sheet. whi

When rhodium plating is specified, any copper base alloy may be used which has an underplating of nickel a minimum of 0.00025 inch thick. (see 4.3.1). before plating. The background cloth which covers the entire face and curved edge of the mount, shall be as specified in 3.4.1.1.1 thru 3.4.1.1.3 as applicable, The leatherette which covers the entire back of the mount, shall be as specified in 3.4.1.5, Assemble as specified: a. Cement the
42、 impregnated paperboard stay to the applicable background cloth, turning the edge of the cloth over the stay 1/4 (2 1/16) inch on the curved section and cement to the stay forming a finished edge. b. 47、 of materials, consisting of the cotton buckram inserted between two (2) plies of the background material. The background cloth as applicable, shall be as specified in 3.4.1.1.1 thru 3.4.1.1.3.
