Hubs, when furnished by the Government, shall be used only for making the contractors working dies. The contractors stamping and embossing dies shall be tooled and po

35、old for electroplating shall be 24 Karat (see 4.4.1.1). * 3.3.2.1 Gold plating. Gold specified in 3.3.2 shall be used for gold plating. Prior to plating the metal insignia shall be cleaned of matter that may affect the gold plating process. The plating shall have a mirror-like polish and finish and
36、shall be non-porous and continuous over the entire surface and there shall be no cut through, blistering or peeling. Metal insignia, to be gold plated, shall be made from either red brass or yellow brass as specified in Table I. The gold-plated surface shall show no visible chemical reaction when te
37、sted as specified in 4.5.2. * 3.3.3 Lacquer. The lacquer shall be a clear, pale, nonpigmented synthetic type. The dry lacquer film shall be continuous, level, adherent, and free from dust, lint and other foreign inclusions. When tested as specified in 4.4.1.1, the tissue paper shall not adhere to th
38、e lacquered surface. 3.3.4 Attachment device. The attachment device shall be of the prong and clutch type as shown in Figure 1 and as specified herein. The prongs shall be made of nickel silver as specified in Table I and shall be hard soldered or electronically fused to the back of the insignia (se
39、e 4.4.1.1). Approximate position of prongs is indicated in Figure 1. Clutches may be made from any type brass. When the size of metal insignia is a limiting factor and distance between prongs precludes use of clutch size specified in Figure 1, the clutches shall be 3/8 (+ 1/32) inch in diameter. Whe
40、n tested as specified in 4.4.4, the clutch shallnot be removable by hand except when the release wings are depressed. Location of prongs shall be in accordance with Figures 2 and 3 and 3.7.41. 3.3.5 Hard solder. Hard solder shall be a silver alloy having a melting 3.3.6 Embroidery mater-ia1 (metalli

The rayon yarn used for highlights of the embroidered insignia, when specified, shall be a continuous filament regenerated cellulose type, shade Black HAN, C.A. No. 67138, in accordance with
44、the Department of Defense Standard Shades for Heraldic Yarns. The use of sulphur dyes is prohibited. * 3.3.8.1 Colorfastness. The yarn shall show fastness to light, laundering (3 cycles), wet-dry cleaning and perspiration equal to or better than the standard sample when tested as specified in 4.4.1.
45、 As a limit of acceptability or when no standard sample is available, the yarn shall show good fastness to light, laundering (3 cycles), wet-dry cleaning and perspiration when tested as specified in 4.4.1. 3.3.9 Nylon braid. Nylon braid used for chevron stripes in metallic embroidered insignia shall
46、 be 1/8 (+ 1/32, -0) inch wide weighing 9.5 (+ 0.5) ounces per gross yards. It shall be made of 2-ply mercerized cotton shffer ends with an outer covering of nylon. The braid shall have one vellum consisting of 21 stuffer ends (min.) with an additional 7 stuffer ends (min.) on each side of the vellu
47、m. The outer covering shall completely cover the stuffer ends and shall behade with 8 carriers (min.) with 2 ends of nylon per carrier. Testing.shal1 be performed as specified in 4.4.1. * 3,3.9.1 Color. The nylon braid shall be dyed shade Gold HF, C.A. No. 67106 in accordance with the Department of
48、Defense Standard Shades for Heraldic Yarns, to approximately match the metallic embroidery material specified in 3.3.6, The use of sulphur dyes is prohibited. * 3.3.9.1.1 Colorfastness. The dyed braid shall show colorfastness to light, crocking and wet-dry cleaning equal to or better than the standa
49、rd sample when tested as specified in 4.4.1. As a limit of acceptability or when no standard sample is available, the dyed braid shall show a minimum of “good“ fastness to light, wet-dry cleaning and shall show a dry crocking rating not lower than 3 and a wet crocking not lower than 2 when tested as specified in 4.4.1. 3.3.10 Base cloth. 3.3.10.1 Cloth, broadcloth.
