17、I LOADING OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS IN MILVAN CONTAINERS. 1. SCOPE. 1.1 - Scope. This standard establishes the approvedmethods for loading and dunnaging hazardous materials in MILVAN contqiners equipped with mechanical. load-bracing systems approved by the Bureau of Expl os ves. 1.2 Application. This s

18、tandard shall be used by personnel engaged for or by the Navy for the pur- pose of loading and dunnaging ammunition and other hazardous materials in MILVAN containers. It applies to shipments from one Government activity to another and, when required by contract, shipments to the Navy from contracto

19、rs plants. 1.3 Compliance with law. The United States Code of Federal Regulations, Title 46 and Title 49, administered by the Department of Transportation (DOT), contain the Federal . laws governing the trans- portation of hazardous materials. Adherence to this standard will assure compliance with F

20、ederal regulations. State and municipal laws vary widely andare beyond the scope of thisEfocurnenf. A contrivance charged with explosives, propellants, pyrotechnics, initiating composition, or nuclear, biological, or chemical material for use in connection with defense or offense including demolition. 3.1.2 Bay. One or more unit loads between two sets of crossmembers in a MIL

33、VAN Container. 3.1.3 Belt rail. Steel Fails welded to both sidewalls of-the MILVAN container, parallel to the - floor and at specified heights from the floor. They form the part of.ths mechanical bracing system into which the crossmembers are fastened. 3.1.4 Buffer piece. Dunnage member which serves

Metal bracing dunna

35、ge member which installs across the container between belt rails and locks into place. Normally, 25-crossmembers are provided with the MILVAN container. 3.1.6 Cleat. A member used to reinforte another member or tohold it in its position. 3.1.7 Fill material. Dunnage lumber suitable for shimmhg betwe

36、en other dunnage components - and/or container and between crossmembers and the lading. 3.1.8 Hazardous materials. Explosives and other dangerous articles as used in Title 18, United States Code of Federal Regulations, Sections 831 -835. . 3.1.9 Hold-down. Dunnage component placed across the top of

37、lading to prevent upward . movement. 3.1.1 O Horizontal. Dunnage member serving as a horizontal component of a dunnage structure. 3.1.11 Lateral. Dunnage-structure member which runs parallel with the lateral centerline of a MILVAN container. 3.1.12 Layer. A course or stratum of items parallel to the

38、 flooi, one item in height, and two or more items in width. (See figure 1 .) - 3.1.13 Load pattern. Placement pattern of the lading in the MILVAN container. 3.1.14 Longitudinal. Dunnage-structure member which runs parallel with the longitudinal centerline of a MILVAN container. 3.1.15 Pitch. The mov

39、ement of o ship in which the bow and stern alternately moves up and down. 3.1 17 Row. Items extending lengthwise of the MILVAN container, parallel to the sides, and - one item in width. (See figure 1 .) 3.1.18 Seal. Metal device for fastening and securing metal straps. 3.1.19 Separator. Plywood shee

40、t serving in the same capacity as a separator gate. 3.1.20 Separator gate. Dunnage structure placed between lading and MILVAN container . - crossmembers. 3.1 -21 Shim.
