SCOPE AND PURPOSE1.1 Scope. This docume

、nt covers the de-fects for conventional rubber molded items, thatis, articles which are made by curing rubbercompounds in a forming mold. Cast plastisolitems, “O” rings, pneumatic tires and tubes, molded rubber fuel tanks, ebonite items anditems containing cellular rubber are specificallyexcluded.1.2

、 Purpose. The primary objective of thisdocument is to present word descriptions andphotographs of possible defects in rubber moldeditems that may be presented for inspection. Inaddition it provides a training aid for inspectors.1.2.1 In general, this document is not in-tended to take the place of a

、particular inspec-tion procedure aid which may be provided forinspectors to verify conformance with a par-ticular specification. The quality requirementsspecified in the basic specification are governing.2. REFERENCED DOCUMENTS2.1 StandardsMILITARYML-STD-105Sampling Proceduresand Tables for Inspecti

、DEFINITIONS3.1 The categories, major and minor defects, are as defined in Standard MIL-STD-105.3.2 Word descriptions of defects used in thisstandard are in accordance with StandardMIL-STD-177.3.3 Location I defect. The condition wherethe imperfection occurs on a primary use partof the item surface as

、 regards dimensional toler-ances or physical stress in service.3.4 Location II defect. The conditionwhere the imperfection does not occur on aprimary use part of the item surface as regardsdimensional tolerances or physical stress inservice.3.5 Fabric, floating. The condition wherea reinforcing fabr

、ic is not in the correct position.3.6 Staking, bad. The condition where aninsert is not in the correct position.4. DEFECT DESCRIPTIONS AND CLAS-SIFICATION4.1 Since the classification of certain de-fects depends on the service requirements ofthe item, it is imperative that the end use beknown before

、inspection is started. In themajority of cases, the end uses will be apparentor can be readily determined from the procure-ment document. However, in case of doubt, the cognizant technical bureau or agency (onprimes) or the endorsing inspection service (onsubs) should be requested to supply thisinfor

、mation.4.2 The classification of defects for moldeditems is more complex than that for a single-shape, single-application item such as V-belts.Molded items are produced in a nearly infinitevariety of sizes and shapes so that there is nocommon or typical shape for this class of item. Also, these items

、 have several principal enduses or service requirements which are dis-similar in the amount of perfection or qualityrequired. These include the following:(a) Flexing A primary use where the.item undergoes constant or inter-mittent bending, twisting or deflect-ing during service such as a vibra-tion

、isolation mounting.(b) Sealing A primary use where theitem serves as an airtight or water-tight closure such as a gasket or aboot.(c) Barring (barrier material) A primary.use where the item serves as an im-pervious material to passage of aliquid or gas such as a diaphragm orpneumatic closure.,(d) Ma

、tching A primary application fordimensional tolerances where theitem must be assembled with matingparts such as a stud mounting or acable connector.(e) Protecting-An intermediate use wherethe item serves as a covering mate-rial and physical stress is non-exist-ent or occurs infrequently, such as abr

、ake pedal.1Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-MIL-STD-40715 February 1957(f) Filling Subordinate use where the.item serves merely as an internsspace filler and physical stress is non-existent or occurs infrequently.A molded item may, and f

、requently does, have two or more of these service requirementsin combination.4.3 It is recognized that the rejection of aninspection lot of molded items for defectswhich are not commensurate with the dimen-sional tolerances or degree of quality requiredby the user can result in an appreciable increas

、ein the cost of production. Also, in some in-stances the enforcement of very high standardscould result in an appreciable decrease in thevolume of production. Accordingly, some ofthe defects in this standard are classified underthree categories (major, minor, or acceptable)depending on the type of service requirementNote the definitions of location I and location IIdefects under definition of terms4.4 Illustrations.
