SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specificati

The finished product of this specification shall be manufactured of hemp (Cannabis Sativa) “line“ or “tow“, or from Benares Sunn fiber (Crotalaria Junce

10、77797L1 0002377 2 D T-6-56A L 3.2 Manufacture. Marine oakum shall be machine spun into slivers, whose texture shall be soft and uniform in density. It shall possess sufficient strength to sustain at least ten feet of its own weight without becoming separated at any point when tested as specified in
11、4.3.1. when tested as specified in 4.3.2. suitable grade of pine tar in an amount not less than 10 percent and not more than 25 per- cent when tested as specified in 4.3.3. 3.5 Put-u Unless otherwise specified (see 6.21, marine oakum shall be wound into balls weigdiproximately 3 to 5 pounds each. 3.
12、6 Identification ticket. Each ball of oakum shall have a ticket (identification tag) attached. 5 of UU-T-81. The ticket shall be made of not less than 15 point paper stock, and shall have a minimum tearing resistance of both directions (total) of 850 grams. The ticket shall be legibly printed, stamp
13、ed or typed with water insoluble ink. The ticket shall contain the following information: 3.3 Length per pound. The weight of the spun slivers shall be 45-55 feet per pound, 3.4 Tar content. 16、.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the supplier is responsible for the performance of all inspection require- mnts as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contract or order, the supplier may use his own or any other facil
17、ities suitable for the performance of the inspec- tion requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure that supplies and serdc
18、es conform to prescribed requirements. 4.2 Quality conformance inspection. 4.2.1 Sampling for quality conformance inspection. accordance with MIL-STD-105, except where otherwise indicated. Sampling shall be performed in 4.2.1.1 Lot. For purposes of sampling, examination and tests, a lot shall consis

The defects listedin table II O shall be counted regardless of their proximity to each other except where two or more defects represent a single local
22、 condition, in which case only the more serious defect shall be counted. The unit of product for this examination shall be one ball. Ten percent of the gross length contained on each sample unit but not less than 50 feet shall be subjec ed to the visual examination. The lot size for this examination
23、 shall be expressed in units of balls. The acceptable quality level (AQL) shall be 10 major defects and 25 total defects (major and minor combined) per 100 units, in accordance with table I. X 4.2.3 Examination or weight and tare. The sample unit for this examination shall be one ball. The inspection level shall be 5-3 a
26、nd the AQL shall be 4.0 percent defective. For lots consisting of 500 or fewer units, the sample size shall be 10 and the acceptance number, one. The lot size shall be the number of units in the inspection lot. Defects shall be as specified in 4.2.3.1 and 4.2.3.2. following are found during inspecti

An examination shall be defects per 100
29、units. 4.3 Testing of the end item. The methods of testing specified in table IV shall be followed. The physical and chemical values specified in section 3 apply to the average of the determinations made on a sample unit for test purposes as specified in the applicable test methods. All test reports
30、 shall contain individual values utilized in expressing the final result. The lot shall be unacceptable if one or more units fail to meet any require- ment. To preclude the possibility of obtaining erroneous results, carefully and slowly remove a minimum length of 10 feet from the ball without applying tension. tion, allowing the designated length to suspend freely and unhampered in air. The sliver shall b
33、e of such composition that it will withstand its own weight without becoming separated. 4.3.2 Determination of length per pound. While exercising care not to cause any damage to the sliver, unwind from the ball, carefully and slowly, at least 10 feet of it across a smooth table top or flat surface.
34、The actual length of the sliver shall be meas- ured, cut from the ball, and wieghed. 37、etermination of tar content. 4.3.3.1 Routine test. A sample containing approximately 10 grams of oakum shall be taken and accurately weighed. The sample shall be placed in a Soxhlet extraction apparatus (or equal), and extracted with diethylether. The diethylether is then evaporated off and the resi
38、due dried, cooled, and weighed. The difference between the final weight and the weiqht of the empty flask is the weight of the soluble material, and the percentage of the weight of the original sample which the weight of soluble material represents is calculated and considered as tar content. 4.3.3.
39、2 Um ire test If results obtained by methods meeting the requirements of 4.3.3.1 are dbtar content shall be determined by the following umpire test, and tho results shall be considered final. A sample containing approximately 10 grams of oakum ahall be taken and conditioned to constant weight at 20
40、to 25OC. and at 50 to 65 percent relative humidity. After accurately determining the final weight, the sample shall be placed in a Soxhlet extraction apparatus and treated with diethylether for a period of 6 hours at an extraction rate which fills and empties the extraction tube at least 12 times an
41、 hour. The diethylethex extract is collected in a weighed flask and the bulk of the diethylether is first distilled off and the remainder evaporated off over a steam bath. The residue is dried for one hour at 10So to 110OC. The flask is then cooled in a desiccatox and weighed. The difference between
42、 the final weight and the weight of the soluble material, and the percentage of the weight of the original sample which the weight of soluble material represents is calculated and considered as tar content. 5, PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY (The preparation or delivery requirements specified herein apply
