Mock-up work done on the Constel

2、lation Program identified components or interfaces in vehicle and ground operations designs that could affect safety and performance. Description of Driving Event: During the Constellation Program, even though modeling tools were used and many long discussions occurred during the development of vehi

3、cle and integrated ground systems, the operational assumptions made by the design center, and those of the ground operations organization, did not agree. Modeling tools provided value and were needed, but they did not help the engineers communicate with each other. Full-scale mock-ups were useful in

4、 evaluating problems with operations and design, or a combination of the two. Lesson(s) Learned: Providing inexpensive full-scale mock-ups throughout the program can save valuable time and effort. If mock-up activities had begun earlier in the Orion life cycle, problems could have been addressed soo

5、ner and would have had a smaller effect on design and development. Recommendation(s): Evaluate resources needed for full-scale mock-ups, use the mock-ups as quickly as possible to resolve integration issues, and identify an appropriate time to begin ground operations mock-up work. In addition, a con

6、centrated effort should be made up-front to develop a team to perform the work.
