SCOPE1.1 FormThis specification covers an aircraft-quality, low-alloy steel in the form of bars,

6、 forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock.1.2 ApplicationThese products have been used typically for parts 0.500 inch (12.70 mm) and under in nominal section thickness at time of heat treatment requiring a through-hardening steel capable of developing hardness as high as 52 HRC when properly h

7、ardened and tempered and also parts of greater thickness but requiring proportionately lower hardness, but usage is not limited to such applications.2. 16、 shall be supplied in the following condition; hardness and tensile strength shall be determined in accordance with ASTM A 370:3.2.1 Bars3.2.1.1 Bars 0.500 inch (12.70 mm) and Under in Nominal Diameter or Least Distance Between Parallel SidesCold finished having tensile strength not higher than 125

17、ksi (862 MPa) or equivalent hardness (See 8.2).3.2.1.2 Bars Over 0.500 inch (12.70 mm) in Nominal Diameter or Least Distance Between Parallel SidesHot finished and annealed, unless otherwise ordered, having hardness not higher than 235 HB, or equivalent. Bars ordered cold finished may have hardness

18、as high as 248 HB, or equivalent (See 8.3).3.2.1.3 Bar shall not be cut from plate (Also see 4.4.2).3.2.2 ForgingsAnnealed in accordance with AMS-H-6875.3.2.3 Mechanical TubingCold finished, unless otherwise ordered, having hardness not higher than 25 HRC, or equivalent. Tubing ordered hot finished

19、and annealed shall have hardness not higher than 99 HRB, or equivalent (See 8.3).3.2.4 Forging StockAs ordered by the forging manufacturer.3.3 PropertiesThe product shall conform to the following requirements; hardness testing shall be performed in accordance with ASTM A 370:3.3.1 MacrostructureVisu

20、al examination of transverse full cross-sections from bars, billets, tube rounds, and forging stock, etched in hot hydrochloric acid in accordance with ASTM E 381, shall show no pipe or cracks. Porosity, segregation, inclusions, and other imperfections shall be no worse than the macrographs of ASTM

25、from decarburization on the ground, turned, or polished surfaces. 3.3.4.2 Allowable decarburization of bars, billets, and tube rounds ordered for redrawing or forging or to specified microstructural requirements shall be as agreed upon by purchaser and vendor.3.3.4.3 Decarburization of bars to which

32、se method using microhardness testing in accordance with ASTM E 384. The microhardness method shall be conducted on a hardened but untempered specimen protected during heat treatment to prevent changes in surface carbon content. Depth of decarburization, when measured by the microhardness method, is

33、 defined as the perpendicular distance from the surface to the depth under that surface where there is no further increase in hardness. Such measurements shall be far enough away from any adjacent surface to be uninfluenced by any decarburization on the adjacent surface. In case of dispute, the dept

34、h of decarburization determined using the microhardness traverse method shall govern.3.3.4.5.1 When determining the depth of decarburization, it is permissible to disregard local areas provided the decarburization of such areas does not exceed the above limits by more than 0.005 inch (0.13 mm) and t

35、he width is 0.065 inch (1.65 mm) or less.3.4 QualityThe product, as received by purchaser, shall be uniform in quality and condition, sound, and free from foreign materials and from imperfections detrimental to usage of the product.3.4.1 Steel shall be aircraft quality conforming to AMS2301.3.4.2 Ba

36、rs and mechanical tubing ordered hot rolled or cold drawn, or ground, turned, or polished shall, after removal of the standard stock removal allowance in accordance with AS1182, be free from seams, laps, tears, and cracks open to the machined, ground, turned, or polished surface.3.4.3 Grain flow of

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS4.1 Responsibility for InspectionThe vendor of the product shall supply all samples for vendors tests and shall be responsible for the performance of all required tests. Purchaser reserves the right to sample and to perform any confirmatory testing de

39、emed necessary to ensure that the product conforms to specified requirements. 4.2 Classification of Tests4.2.1 Acceptance TestsComposition (3.1), condition (3.2), macrostructure (3.3.1), average grain size (3.3.2), hardenability (3.3.3), decarburization (3.3.4), frequency-severity cleanliness rating

40、 (3.4.1), and tolerances (3.5) are acceptance tests and shall be performed on each heat or lot as applicable.4.2.2 Periodic TestsGrain flow of die forgings (3.4.3) is a periodic test and shall be performed at a frequency selected by the vendor unless frequency of testing is specified by purchaser. 4

41、.3 Sampling and TestingShall be as follows:4.3.1 Bars, Mechanical Tubing, and Forging Stock In accordance with AMS2370.4.3.2 Forgings In accordance with AMS2372.4.4 Reports4.4.1 The producer of bars, forgings, and mechanical tubing shall furnish with each shipment a report showing theproducer identi

42、ty and country where the metal was melted (e. g., final melt in the case of metal processed by multiple melting operations) and results of tests for composition, macrostructure, hardenability, and frequency-severity cleanliness rating of each heat, and for average grain size of each lot, and stating

43、 that the product conforms to the other technical requirements. This report shall include the purchase order number, heat and lot numbers, AMS6448L, size (and/or part number, if applicable), and quantity. If forgings are supplied, the size and melt source of stock used to make the forgings shall als

44、o be included.4.4.2 Report the nominal metallurgically worked cross sectional size and the cut size, if different (Also see 3.2.1.3).4.4.3 The producer of forging stock shall furnish with each shipment a report showing the producer identity and country where the metal was melted (e. g., final melt i

45、n the case of metal processed by multiple melting operations) and the composition, macrostructure, hardenability and frequency-severity cleanliness rating of each heat. This report shall include the purchase order number, heat number, AMS6448L, size (and/or part number, if applicable) and quantity.S
