15、nd cleaning are controlled to ensure continued conformance to composition requirements.3.1.1.1 Carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen shall also be determined periodically on finished wire (See 4.2.2).3.1.1.2 For Type 2 (copper coated) wire, copper shall also be determined periodically on finished w
16、ire (See 4.2.2).3.1.2 Check AnalysisComposition variations shall meet the applicable requirements of AMS2259. No variation is permitted for oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen.3.2 Melting PracticeSteel shall be vacuum induction melted or vacuum arc remelted.3.3 ConditionCold worked, bright finish, in a t
17、emper and with a surface finish which will provide proper feeding of the wire in machine welding equipment.3.4 Fabrication3.4.1 Wire shall be formed from rod or bar descaled by a process which does not affect the composition of the wire.Surface irregularities inherent with a forming process that do
18、not tear the wire surface are acceptable provided the wire conforms to the tolerance of 3.73.4.2 In process annealing, if required, between cold rolling or drawing operations, shall be performed in vacuum or in protective atmosphere to avoid surface oxidation and absorption of other extraneous mater
19、ials.3.4.3 Butt welding is permissible provided both ends to be joined are either alloy verified using a method or methods capable of distinguishing the alloy from all other alloys processed within the facility or the repair is made at the wire processing station. The butt weld shall not interfere w
20、ith uniform, uninterrupted feeding of the wire in machine welding equipment.3.4.4 Residual material, drawing compounds, oxides, dirt, oil, dissolved gasses and other foreign materials picked up during wire processing that can adversely affect the weld characteristics, the operation of the equipment
21、or the properties of the weld metal shall be removed by cleaning processes that will neither result in pitting nor cause gas absorption by the wire or deposition of substances harmful to welding operations.3.4.4.1 Residual material and dissolved gases deposited on or absorbed by the wire during proc
22、essing, that can adversely affect the welding characteristics, the operation of the equipment, or the properties of the weld metal, shall be removed.3.4.5 When Type 2, copper coated wire is specified, the copper coating shall be clean, bright, and uniform in appearance. A maximum of four discontinui
23、ties in any 36-inch (914-mm) length are acceptable provided the exposed wire is clean and bright. The maximum allowable discontinuity size shall be 0.25 inch (6.4 mm) in length. The thickness of the copper coating shall not exceed 0.0005 inch (0.0127 mm) on the diameter.SAE AMS6459E Page 4 of 73.5 P
24、ropertiesWire shall conform to the following requirements:3.5.1 WeldabilityMelted wire shall flow smoothly and evenly during welding and shall produce acceptable welds determined by a procedure agreed upon by purchase and vendor. The referee method of ARP1876 may be used to resolve weldability dispu
25、tes.3.5.2 Spooled WireShall conform to 3.5.2.1, 3.5.2.2 and 3.5.2.33.5.2.1 WindingFiller metal in coils and on spools shall be wound so that kinks, waves, sharp bends, overlapping, or wedging are not encountered, leaving the filler metal free to unwind without restriction. The outside end of the ele
26、ctrode (the end where welding is to begin) shall be identified so it can be located readily and shall be fastened to avoid unwinding. The winding shall be level winding.3.5.2.2 CastWire, wound on standard diameter spools as shown in Table 2 shall have imparted to it a curvature such that a specimen
27、sufficient in length to form one loop with a 1-inch (25-mm) overlap, when cut from the spool and laid on a flat surface, shall form a circle (cast) within the limits shown in Table 23.5.2.3 HelixThe specimen on which cast was determined, when laid on a flat surface and measured between adjacent turn

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS4.1 Responsibility for InspectionThe vendor of wire shall supply all samples for vendors tests and sha
34、ll be responsible for the performance of all required tests, Purchaser reserves the right to sample and to perform any confirmatory testing deemed necessary to ensure that the wire conforms to specified requirements.4.2 Classification of Tests4.2.1 Acceptance TestsComposition (3.1.1), sizes and tole
35、rances (3.7), and alloy verification (5.2) are acceptance tests and shall be performed on each heat or lot as applicable.4.2.2 Periodic TestsDetermination of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen (3.1.1.1) and of copper on finished wire (3.1.1.2), weldability (3.5.1), cast (3.5.2.2), and helix (3.5
36、.2.3) are periodic tests and shall be performed at a frequency selected by the vendor unless frequency of testing is specified by purchaser.4.3 Sampling and TestingShall be in accordance with AMS2370 and as specified herein.SAE AMS6459E Page 6 of 74.4 ReportsThe vendor of wire shall furnish with eac
37、h shipment a report showing the results of tests for chemical composition of each heat and stating that the wire conforms to the other technical requirements. This report shall include the purchase order number, heat and lot numbers, AMS6459E, nominal size, and quantity.4.5 Resampling and RetestingS
38、hall be in accordance with AMS2370.5. PREPARATION FOR DELIVERY5.1 Wire shall be supplied either on spools in one continuous length for machine welding or in cut lengths for manual welding, as ordered. Wire on each spool or in each package of cut lengths shall be from the same heat of steel.5.2 Alloy
39、 VerificationWire from each spool or package of cut lengths shall be alloy verified by a method acceptable to purchaser. The alloy verification procedures of ARP4926 are recommended.5.2.1 An 8-inch (203-mm) length of wire shall be made accessible at both ends of each spool for alloy verification.5.3
40、 IdentificationShall be identified in accordance AMS2816 unless identification in accordance with AMS2819 or other method is specified by purchaser.5.4 Packaging and MarkingShall be by premium quality method in accordance with AMS2814 unless standard method in accordance with AMS2813or other method
