For the purposes of this part of the code, contract administration starts with instructions to the contractor to commence work as set out
7、 in Subclause 4.1 of Section 0. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE HANDING OVER OF THE SITE SITE PREPARATION. Preparation of the site and the laying of the paving are frequently carried out by different parties. In order to avoid claims for delay, action should be taken tilaeously as follows to ensure that the r
8、equirements of 3.2.1 and 3.2.3 below have been complied with: (a) By the engineer responsible for both contracts, where the preparation of the site before paving is to be done by others under another contract; or (b) By the contractor, in order to avoid delays during the laying and to avoid rejectio
9、n on completion where the contractor is responsible for both preparation and laying. EVIDENCE OF SUITABILITY OF M)CAL SANDS (Subclause 3.3). Where applicable, the contractor should prcduce, as early as possible, evidence of satisfactory previous use or the results of tests that show that particular
10、local sands (including mine sand) are satisfactory. To expedite the contract and to avoid a claim for extra payment on account of delays caused by indecision (see 3.2.3 below), the engineer should not unduly delay approval of the use of such sands. DURING CONSTRUCTION METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION Toleranc
11、es Applicable to Top of Subbase (Subclauses 6.1 and 6.2). The contractor and the engineer should take particular note that the tolerance requirements for a subbase that is to receive segmented paving are tighter than those for a foundation layer in terms of SABS 1200 D) or SABS l200 DA), for subbase
12、 in terms of SABS l200 ME3) or for subgrade in terms of SaBS 1200 DM). Both parties should ensure adherence to the applicable tolerances. (See also Subclause 3.2.2 of Section W of Part 2 and Subclause 1.3.4 of Section MJ of Part 3 of the code.) Laying of Units. The procedures for laying precast conc
13、rete paving blocks that are recosmended by the Concrete Masonry ssociation) should be followed in the construction of all segmented pavements. ADMINISTRATION Subsoil Drainage (Subclause 5.1). The engineer or the contractor, as appropriate (see 2.1 above), should ensure that subsoil drainage has been
14、 properly completed over the area to be paved, and that all trenches have been backfilled and adequately compacted before the subbase and other foundation layers are completed. Subbase/Foundation Layer (Subclause 5.1). In addition to ensuring proper construction and compaction of the subbase/foundat
15、ion layer the engineer or the contractor, or both, as appropriate, should verify that the grading is such that water cannot pond under the completed paving. (See also 3.1.1 above.) Local Sand (Subclause 3.3 and see also 2.2 above and Sclause 1.3.2 of Section W of Part 3 of the code.) The engineer sh
16、ould designate the source of acceptable sand or, when applicable, give early approval for the use of sand from a souce that the contractor proposes to use. Where doubt exiits, the engineer should consult the NITRR before giving approval. Inspection of Units (Subclause 3.1.1). Surface hairline cracks
17、 may occur in the process of manufacture of blocks but do not adversely affect performance or durability. Godl quality paving blocks may also be chipped or slightly damaged during handling without their perfor- mance being adversely affected. QUALITY CONTROL AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS QUALITY CONTROL.
