10、s and rasps 1 Scope 1.1 This specification covers the material, dimensional, and finish requirements for the following four categories of tools: NOTE a) Machinists files b) Saw files c) Miscellaneous files d) Rasps NOTE Requirements that must be specified by the purchaser are listed in appendix A. 2

11、 Definitions 2.1 For the purposes of this specification the following definitions shall apply: acceptable acceptable to the authority administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevant Amdt 1; amdt 2; amdt 4 cross-section the cross-section at the uncut porti

12、on of the file or rasp adjacent to the shoulder but, in the case of tools with no tang, the cross-section at the mid-point defective a file or rasp that fails in one or more respects to comply with the appropriate requirements of the specification double-cut two series of parallel cuts on a file sur

16、signated (in order of increasing numbers of teeth per unit length measured along the centre line) as bastard, second cut, or smooth 3 General requirements 3.1 Material The chemical composition of steel for files and rasps shall be such as will result in the production of a tool having good cutting q

17、ualities (see also 3.8). 3.2 Type and cut The type of file or rasp and, when relevant, the type of cut shall be as specified by the purchaser and shall be one of the types and one of the appropriate cuts given in section 4. 3.3 Length The nominal length shall be one of those given in the appropriate

18、 of tables 2-21, as specified by the purchaser. 3.4 Cross-sectional dimensions The cross-sectional dimensions of files and rasps shall conform to the appropriate values given in the relevant of tables 2-21. 3.5 Tolerances on spacing of teeth 3.5.1 File surfaces The number of teeth per 25 mm shall co

19、nform to the appropriate range given in the relevant of tables 5-18 and 21. SANS 1172:2008 Edition 1.4 5 3.5.2 Rasp surfaces a) Tolerance on the number of teeth per row: 1 b) Tolerance on the number of rows per 25 mm: 1 3.6 Heat treatment All files and rasps shall have been heat-treated to a uniform

20、 hardness. 3.7 Finish Files and rasps shall be true to shape and free from rust and other defects. The teeth shall be uniform and regular over the whole of the cut surface and uncut edges shall be smooth and free from burrs. 3.8 Performance When tested in accordance with 7.2, files and rasps shall c

21、ut the provers without any sign of slip, blunting, or stripping of teeth. 4 Specific requirements 4.1 Machinists files 4.1.1 Flat files (see table 2) Flat files shall have a rectangular cross-section that is uniform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers in width to a blunt point

22、. The sides shall be double-cut, and the edges single-cut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.1.2 Hand files (see table 3) Hand files shall have a rectangular cross-section that is uniform for the whole of its cut length. 23、and the other edge uncut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.1.3 Half round files (see table 4) Half round files shall have a semi-circular cross-section that is uniform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers in width and thickness to a blunt point. 24、ide shall be double-cut and the convex side double-cut in the case of a bastard cut, and single-cut in the cases of second and smooth cuts. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.1.4 Round files (see table 5) Round files shall have a circular cross-section that is uniform for approxi

25、mately two-thirds of the length and then tapers to a blunt point. Files of length exceeding 150 mm that are bastard cut shall be double-cut. Other files shall be single-cut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. SANS 1172:2008 Edition 1.4 6 4.1.5 Square files (see table 6) Square file

26、s shall have a square cross-section that is uniform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers to a blunt point. All the sides shall be double-cut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.1.6 Three-square files (see table 7) Three-square files shall have a triangular (

27、equilateral) cross-section that is uniform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers to a blunt point. The sides shall be double-cut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. NOTE Unlike taper saw files the corners are not cut. 4.1.7 Warding files (see table 8) Warding f

28、iles shall have rectangular cross-section of uniform thickness and that tapers in width to a blunt point. The sides shall be double-cut and the edges single-cut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.1.8 Knife files (see table 9) Knife files shall have a wedge-shaped cross-section.

29、The thinner edge shall be straight and of uniform thickness over the full length of the file and shall be rounded. The thicker edge shall be of uniform thickness and parallel to the thinner edge for approximately two-thirds of the length and shall then so approach it as to produce a blunt point. The

30、 sides shall be double-cut and both edges single-cut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.2 Saw files 4.2.1 Taper saw files (see table 10) A taper saw file shall be one of three varieties, designated as regular, slim, and extra-slim, as specified by the purchaser. Taper saw files

31、shall have a triangular (equilateral) cross-section that is uniform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers to a blunt point. The sides and corners shall be single-cut but uncut adjacent to the point for an acceptable distance. The type of cut shall be second cut. 4.2.2 Band saw t

32、aper files (see table 11) Band saw taper files shall have a triangular (equilateral) cross-section that is uniform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers to a blunt point. The corners shall be rounded. The sides and corners shall be single-cut. The type of cut shall be second cut

The files shall be double-cut but uncut adjacent to the point for an acceptable distance. The type of cut shall be second cut. 4.2.4 Cant saw files (see table 13) Cant saw

34、 files shall have a uniform triangular (isosceles) cross-section, with an obtuse apex angle and truncated base angles. The sides and corners shall be single-cut. The type of cut shall be second cut. 4.2.5 Cross-cut saw files (see table 14) Cross-cut saw files shall have a uniform wedge-shaped cross-

35、section with a rounded back and edge. The sides, edge, and back shall be single-cut. The type of cut shall be second cut. 4.2.6 Double-end saw files (see table 15) Double-end saw files shall have a triangular (equilateral) cross-section that is uniform over the middle two-thirds (approximately) of t

36、he length and then tapers to a blunt point at each end. The sides and corners shall be single-cut but uncut adjacent to each point for an acceptable distance. The type of cut shall be second cut. 4.3 Miscellaneous files 4.3.1 Blunt heavy mill files (see table 16) Blunt heavy mill files shall have a

37、uniform rectangular cross-section. The files shall have one round and one square edge, or two round edges, as specified by the purchaser. The sides and edges shall be single-cut but uncut adjacent to the point. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.3.2 Mill files (see table 17) Mill

38、 files shall have a rectangular cross-section that is uniform throughout or is uniform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers in width to a blunt point, as specified by the purchaser. The files shall have two square edges, one round and one square edge, or two round edges, as spe

39、cified by the purchaser. The sides and edges shall be single-cut. The type of cut shall be bastard, second, or smooth. 4.3.3 Reaper files (see table 17A) Reaper files shall have an integral handle, and a rectangular cross-section that is uniform throughout its length. The edges shall be square to th

40、e sides, and shall be uncut. The sides shall be single cut. Amdt 1 SANS 1172:2008 Edition 1.4 8 4.4 Rasps 4.4.1 Shoe rasps (see table 18) Shoe rasps shall have a uniform semi-circular cross-section with truncated corners and rounded blunt ends. The flat side shall be double file-cut for half of its

41、length and rasp-punched for the remainder. The convex side shall be double file-cut for half of its length and rasp-punched for the remainder, and the truncated corners shall be uncut. 4.4.2 Half round wood rasps (see table 19) Half round wood rasps shall have a semi-circular cross-section that is u

42、niform for approximately two-thirds of the length and then tapers in width and thickness to a blunt point. The sides shall be rasp-punched and the corners single file-cut. 4.4.3 Cabinet rasps (see table 20) Cabinet rasps shall have a semi-circular cross-section that is uniform for approximately two-

43、thirds of the length and then tapers in width and thickness to a blunt point. The sides shall be rasp-punched and the corners single file-cut. 4.4.4 Horse rasps (see table 21) A horse rasp shall be one of two varieties, designated as regular (not tanged) and tanged, as specified by the purchaser. Ho

44、rse rasps shall have a uniform rectangular cross-section. One side shall be rasp-punched and the other side double file-cut. The edges shall be single file-cut. 5 Packing and marking 5.1 Packing Each file or rasp shall be treated with a suitable protective coating that will not interfere with the cu

45、tting action. Only files or rasps of the same type, length, and type of cut, when relevant, shall be packed together in a container and in such a manner as to prevent damage to the teeth during normal handling and transport. 5.2 Marking 5.2.1 Files and rasps Each file or rasp shall be legibly and pe

46、rmanently marked with the manufacturers name or trade mark or both. 5.2.2 Containers Each container shall bear the following information in legible and indelible markings: a) manufacturers name or trade name or both; b) type; SANS 1172:2008 Edition 1.4 9 c) the length; d) when relevant, the type of

47、cut; e) the quantity. 6 Sampling and compliance with the specification1)6.1 Sampling The following sampling procedures shall be applied in determining whether a lot complies with the relevant requirements of the specification. The samples so taken shall be deemed to represent a lot. 6.1.1 Sample for

48、 inspection From the lot take at random the number of files or rasps shown in column 2 of table 1 relative to the appropriate lot size shown in column 1. 49、0 15 20 2 3 4 6.1.2 Sample for testing From the sample taken in accordance with 6.1.1 take at random the number of files or rasps shown in column 3 of table 1 relative to the appropriate lot size shown in column 1. 6.2 Compliance with the specification The lot shall be deemed to comply with the requirements of the specification if after inspection and testing of the samples taken in accordance with 6.1 no defective is found. 7 Inspection and methods of test 7.1 Inspection Examine the sample taken in accordance with 6.1.1 for compliance with those requirements of the specifi
