11、al insulation materials for industrial applications Part 2: Metal-mesh-faced mineral fibre mattresses 1 Scope 1.1 This part of the specification covers mineral fibre mattresses faced on one or on both sides with a flexible metal mesh and intended for use as thermal insulation in industrial applicati

12、ons. 1.2 This part of the specification does not cover the acoustical or electrical properties of the insulating material. NOTE a) Materials covered by this part of the specification are not necessarily suitable for other applications. b) The standards referred to in this part of the specification a

13、re listed in appendix A. c) Information regarding the verification of the quality of metal-mesh-faced mineral fibre mattresses is given in appendix B. d) General formulae for heat transfer calculations are given in appendix C. 2 Definitions 2.1 For the purposes of this part of the specification the

14、following definitions shall apply: mattress a flexible product comprising an insulating material faced on one or on both sides with wire netting, expanded metal or similar covering attached mechanically to the insulating material maximum service temperature C the maximum temperature at which the mat

15、erial can be used as thermal insulation without any deterioration of its fibrous structure and without its thermal insulating properties being affected thermal conductivity W/(m.K) the thermal transmission through a unit area of a slab of uniform material of unit thickness, when a unit difference of

16、 temperature is established between the faces of the slab SANS 1445-2:2008 Edition 1.1 4 thermal transmission q W the quantity of heat flowing in a unit time NOTE For many thermal insulation materials, thermal transmission occurs by a combination of different modes of heat transfer, and the measured

17、 property should be referred to as an effective thermal conductivity for the specific conditions of test (sample thickness and orientation, environment, applied load, environmental pressure and temperature difference). 3 Requirements 3.1 Construction and materials 3.1.1 Construction a) A mattress sh

18、all consist of a mat of insulating material suitably faced with a metal mesh and held together with stitching that extends from one face of the mattress to the other. b) The stitching shall be such as not to become detached from the facings when pressure is applied over the surface of the mattress,

19、and shall maintain its integrity when the mattress is cut for purposes of shaping. 3.1.2 Materials a) The insulating material of a mattress shall be a man-made mineral fibre derived from rock, slag or glass, processed from a molten state into a fibrous form. b) The facing material shall be a metal m

20、esh. NOTE Woven wire mesh of mesh size 25 mm, and of wire of diameter 1,2-0,6 mm, galvanized after weaving, is a suitable facing material, and is normally available as standard, but other types of facing may be available. c) The stitching material shall be wire or twine, and shall be capable of with

21、standing the maximum service temperature of the mattress (see 4.2(g). 3.2 Dimensions 3.2.1 Length When determined in accordance with 5.4, the length of a mattress shall be at least equal to the nominal length (see 4.2(d), and shall not exceed this value by more than 3 %. 3.2.2 Width When determined

22、in accordance with 5.4, the width of a mattress shall be at least equal to the nominal width (see 4.2(d) and shall not exceed this value by more than 1 %. 3.2.3 Thickness When determined in accordance with 5.5, the thickness of a mattress shall be at least equal to the nominal thickness (see 4.2(e)

23、minus 3 mm. SANS 1445-2:2008 Edition 1.1 5 3.2.4 Compressibility and resilience When a mattress is tested in accordance with 5.6 and is subjected to a pressure of a) 2 600 Pa, the thickness of the mattress shall not exceed the stated thickness (see 4.2(e) plus 3 mm; and b) 122,5 Pa (after the pressu

24、re of 2 600 Pa has been removed), the thickness shall be at least equal to the nominal thickness (see 4.2(e) minus 3 mm. 3.3 Density When determined in accordance with 5.7, the actual density of the insulating material (excluding the metal facings and ties) shall not differ from the nominal density

25、(see 4.2(f) and 4.3(c) by more than 15 %. 3.4 Maximum service temperature 3.4.1 Dimensional stability When the insulating material is tested in accordance with 5.8 at the maximum service temperature stated by the manufacturer (see 4.2(g) and 4.3(d), the specimen shall still comply with 3.2.3. 3.4.2

26、Internal self-heating When the insulating material is tested in accordance with 5.8 at the maximum service temperature stated by the manufacturer (see 4.2(g) and 4.3(d), the specimen shall not a) exhibit self-heating (which is indicated by the test specimens temperature exceeding that of the hotplat

27、e - see figure 4(b) for typical test curves and their interpretation); b) flame during the test; and c) show any sign of impairment of the fibrous structure nor form any cavities. 3.5 Thermal conductivity () When a mattress is tested in accordance with 5.9, a) the mean value of the effective thermal

28、 conductivity at each mean temperature shall not exceed the stated value for that mean temperature (see 4.3(e); and b) no value of the effective thermal conductivity shall exceed the stated value for the relevant mean temperature by more than 10 %. 3.6 Moisture content When determined in accordance

29、with 5.10, the moisture content of the mattress (excluding the metal facings and ties) shall not exceed 5 % (m/m). 3.7 Settlement When tested in the vertical position in accordance with 5.11, a mattress shall not exhibit settlement of more than 2 %. 30、When a mattress is tested in accordance with 5.12, its combustibility rating (i.e. whether it is combustible or non-combustible) shall be as stated by the manufacturer (see 4.3(f). 3.9 Surface fire index classification When determined in accordance with 5.13, the surface fire index classification of

31、 a mattress that is rated as combustible shall be as stated by the manufacturer (see 4.3(g). 3.10 Alkalinity When determined in accordance with 5.14, the pH value of the insulating material shall be in the range 6,0-9,0. 3.11 Water-soluble chloride content When determined in accordance with 5.15, th

32、e water-soluble chloride content of the insulating material shall not exceed the value stated by the manufacturer (see 4.3(h). 4 Packing, marking and data sheet(s) 4.1 Packing Each mattress shall be so packed or so tied that the contents are protected from damage both during normal handling and duri

33、ng transportation and storage in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations (see 4.3(j). 4.2 Marking The following information shall appear in legible and indelible marking on each package containing a mattress or on a label inside or securely attached to the package or to the mattress (as ap

34、plicable): NOTE A label that is inside a package shall be legible through the packing material. a) the manufacturers name or trade name or trade mark; b) the product type identification, i.e. “metal-mesh-faced mineral fibre mattress“; c) the batch identification or the date of manufacture; d) the no

35、minal length and width of the mattress, in millimetres; e) the nominal thickness of the mattress, in millimetres; f) the nominal density of the insulating material, in kilograms per cubic metre; and g) the maximum recommended service temperature, in degrees Celsius. 4.3 Data sheets The following inf

36、ormation in respect of the manufactured product shall be given in a data sheet (or data sheets) and shall be available from the manufacturer: SANS 1445-2:2008 Edition 1.1 7 a) the manufacturers name or trade name or trade mark; b) the product type identification, i.e. “metal-mesh-faced mineral fibre

37、 mattresses“; c) the nominal density of the insulating material, in kilograms per cubic metre; d) the maximum recommended service temperature, in degrees Celsius; e) a table showing the effective thermal conductivity of the insulating material (both with and without the metal facings and ties) for a

38、 temperature differential of 100 15 C, at three or more mean temperatures in the useful service temperature range of the material and covering at least 75 % of this range. f) the combustibility rating of the insulating material, i.e. combustible or non-combustible; g) when relevant, the surface fire

39、 index classification; h) the water-soluble chloride content of the insulating material, in parts per million, by mass; i) a warning on any health hazards associated with the material; and j) any special recommendation for transportation and storage of the mattresses. 5 Inspection and methods of tes

40、t 5.1 Inspection Visually examine each mattress in the sample for compliance with all the relevant requirements of this part of the specification for which tests to assess compliance are not given in 5.4-5.15 (inclusive). 5.2 Test specimens From each batch of mattresses submitted for testing, take t

41、he number of test specimens given in column 2 of table 1, appropriate to the property to be determined, as given in column 1. Prepare the specimens (when relevant) as specified in the appropriate test method subsection given in column 3. NOTE The measurement of length and width (5.4) shall be carrie

44、t a temperature of 23 2 C and a relative humidity of 50 10 % for a period of at least 24 h immediately before tests are carried out, and carry out all tests under these conditions. 5.4 Determination of length and width 5.4.1 Apparatus Any suitable means of measuring the length and width of a specime

45、n to the nearest 1 mm or better. 5.4.2 Preparation of test specimen Unroll or unfold (as or when relevant) a mattress and lay it on a plane hard surface. Allow the material to recover freely for approximately 4 h. 5.4.3 Procedure Measure, to the nearest millimetre, the length and width of the mattre

46、ss at three locations, evenly spaced along the width and length respectively. Calculate the average length and width of the mattress and check for compliance with 3.2.1 and 3.2.2. 5.5 Determination of thickness Use the weighted plate method given in BS 2972 to determine the thickness of the mattress

47、. Check for compliance with 3.2.3. 5.6 Test for compressibility and resilience Use the method given in BS 3958-3 and check for compliance with 3.2.4. NOTE Alternatively, square specimens with sides of length at least 100 mm and at least twice the nominal thickness of the mattress may be used. In thi

48、s case, a square platen with sides exceeding those of the specimen by at least 50 mm, shall be used. The mass of the platen and the additional load shall be such that a pressure of 2 600 50 Pa is applied to the specimen during compression and such that a pressure of 122,5 12,25 Pa is applied to the

49、specimen during measurement of the final thickness. SANS 1445-2:2008 Edition 1.1 9 5.7 Test for density 5.7.1 Apparatus a) A steel rule graduated in intervals of 1 mm. b) A suitable scale 5.7.2 Preparation of test specimen From the mattress cut a square specimen of side at least 200 mm, and remove all metal facings and ties. 5.7.3 Procedure Determine the length and width of the specimen, using the method given in 5.4. Using the scale, determine the mass of the specimen to within 0,2 %. 5.7.4 Calculation Calculate the density of the specimen
