8、nation and testing of manually operated chain blocks and chain lever hoists in use 1 Scope This standard specifies the requirements for the inspection, examination and testing of manually operated chain blocks and chain lever hoists in use. This standard does not cover pneumatic and power driven cha

9、in blocks. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this document, the following definitions apply. 2.1 competent person person having the knowledge, training, experience and qualifications specific to the work or task being performed as specified in the relevant national legislation (see foreword) 2.2 exa

10、mination detailed study by a competent person in such depth and detail as the competent person considers necessary to enable him/her to determine whether the equipment being examined is safe to remain in use 2.3 hoist manually operated chain block and chain lever hoist 2.4 inspection visual checking

11、 of all visible components 2.5 proof load test test during which the chain block or chain lever hoist is operated with an applied load NOTE See 6.1.3. 2.6 register document that is used to record all particulars of incidents, modifications, repairs, inspections, examination and testing of the chain

12、block or chain lever hoist SANS 500:2009 Edition 1 4 2.7 safe working load SWL maximum mass that the hoist can safely raise, lower or suspend under specific service conditions NOTE The SWL is normally the same as the WLL and it may be less, but never more. 2.8 technical data documentation containing

13、 manufacturers standards, operating and maintenance procedures, safety critical component data, spare part lists and exploded view diagrams 2.9 user person or organization that has control of the hoist, the lifting operation and the operator 2.10 working load limit WLL maximum mass that a chain bloc

14、k is designed to raise, lower or suspend NOTE The WLL is equal to or greater than the SWL. 3 Facilities and equipment 3.1 The competent person shall have access to suitable and adequate facilities and equipment to permit all activities associated with the inspection, examination and testing to be ca

15、rried out. Examples of such facilities and equipment are as follows: a) test and measuring equipment; b) cleaning facilities; and c) a well-lit area. 3.2 Testing and measuring equipment shall be maintained and fit for purpose. 3.3 Testing and measuring equipment shall be calibrated and certified at

16、least every 12 months or as recommended by the equipment manufacturer. 4 Safety assessment Before the inspection, examination and testing of manually operated chain blocks and chain lever hoists, hazards pertaining to the equipment, environment and working area shall be identified by the competent p

17、erson. Where necessary, corrective action shall be taken. 5 Inspection and examination 5.1 The inspection and examination shall be performed by a competent person in accordance with the hoist manufacturers standards and recommendations on inspection and examination. 5.2 Hoists that do not comply wit

18、h the manufacturers standards shall be promptly identified as non-compliant. SANS 500:2009 Edition 1 5 5.3 In the absence of the manufacturers recommendations and also technical data, the hoist shall be identified as non-compliant. 5.4 Examination and testing shall not be carried out if the hoist wa

19、s found to be non-compliant. 5.5 The frequency of inspection and examination shall not exceed the requirements specified in the relevant national legislation (see foreword). 5.6 The hoist shall be subjected to a proof load and brake test (see clause 7) after every examination. 6 Overload protection

20、device 6.1 If the hoist is fitted with an overload protection device, the device shall not be removed before the proof load test and brake test. 6.2 The hoist shall be subjected to a proof load and brake test and the test load in 7.3 to ensure that the overload protection device functions in accorda

21、nce with the manufacturers standards. 7 Proof load and brake test 7.1 The proof load and brake test shall be carried out by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months. NOTE More frequent inspection and testing should be considered based on the frequency of use and utilization of the mec

22、hanism. 7.2 An examination (see clause 5) shall be conducted before testing. 7.3 All hoists shall be subjected to a test load that is not less than 1,25 WLL and that does not exceed 1,5 WLL in such a way that every part of the hoist is stressed accordingly, i.e. every component shall be subjected to

23、 one full cycle. 7.4 The brake shall engage immediately when lifting or lowering under load is interrupted. 7.5 A hoist shall be considered fit for use provided that it lifts, lowers and sustains the test load in any working position as designed for. 7.6 If a lever hoist is fitted with a free chaini

24、ng device, the brake operation when such device is activated shall only be possible under a load of less than 30 kg or 3% of the WLL, whichever is the greater. 7.7 After the test, the visible components of the hoist shall be inspected and shall be free from any deformation and defects. 7.8 If a hois

25、t is fitted to a structure (for example an overhead beam), all the components shall be subjected to the requirements of 7.3. SANS 500:2009 Edition 1 6 8 Documentation 8.1 General 8.1.1 After every inspection, examination and test, a report shall be compiled. The report shall contain at least the inf

26、ormation given in 8.2. 8.1.2 All certificates of test shall be endorsed with the identity information necessary to ensure that there is no ambiguity as to the type of hoist at the time of test. 8.1.3 The original copy of the report should be given to the user. 8.1.4 The user shall keep on his/her pr

27、emises a register with full particulars of any examination or test (or both) prescribed by this standard. 8.2 Information to be contained in a report The examination report or test certificate (or both) shall contain at least the following information: a) the name and address of the user for whom th

28、e examination or test (or both) was conducted; b) sufficient particulars (for example the brand, serial number and chain batch number) to identify the hoist; c) the date of the examination or test (or both); d) the WLL of the hoist; e) the test load that was applied; f) a statement to the effect tha

29、t the lifting equipment is safe to operate/fit for use; g) identification of any part found to have a defect, which is, or could become, a danger to persons, and a description of the defect; h) the name, address and qualifications of the competent person conducting either the inspection, examination

30、 or test; and i) the date of the report and the signature of the competent person conducting the inspection, examination and test.
