6、n 2 1 Penetration of wax (paste) polishes 1 Scope This standard specifies a method for the determination of the depth of penetration of penetrometer cones in wax (paste) polishes. 2 Apparatus 2.1 Two brass cones, each fitted with monel metal tips and conforming to the dimensions in figure 1. Each br

7、ass cone is fitted with a plunger suited to the penetrometer used and is such that the combined mass of the brass cone and plunger conforms to the applicable of the following values: a) 60/90 brass cone: 150, 00 g 0,15 g; and b) 90 brass cone: 100 g 0,10 g. 2.2 Penetrometer, calibrated in tenths of

8、a millimetre. Dimensions in millimetres a) 60/90 brass cone b) 90 brass cone Figure 1 Brass cones SANS 5977:2008 Edition 2 2 3 Procedure 3.1 Take two laboratory sample containers and, without removing the lids, condition one at 20,0 C 0,5 C for 24 h and the other at 35,0 C 0,5 C for 24 h. 3.2 Fit th

9、e 60/90 brass cone (see 2.1) and its plunger to the penetrometer (see 2.2). 3.3 Take from its conditioning chamber the laboratory sample container conditioned at 20 C and carry out carry out the procedure set out in 3.4 to 3.9 below as quickly as possible. 3.4 Remove the lid from the laboratory samp

10、le container, and carefully scrape off the top layer of the laboratory sample to a depth of 3 mm to 5 mm, leaving the exposed surface smooth and level. 3.5 Place the laboratory sample container on the platform of the penetrometer and so adjust the height of the penetrometer that the point of the bra

11、ss cone just touches the surface of the laboratory sample and is at least 15 mm from the edge of the laboratory sample container. 3.6 Zero the scale. 3.7 Release the plunger for 5 s. 3.8 Read the penetration in tenths of a millimetre. 3.9 Carry out the test at other points, at least 15 mm apart, on

12、the surface of the laboratory sample until three readings are obtained of which the highest and lowest do not differ by more than three units from the middle reading (one unit = 0,1 mm). 3.10 Repeat steps 3.2 to 3.9 (inclusive) using the 90 brass cone and the laboratory sample conditioned at 35 C. 4

13、 Test report Report the following information: a) all the data needed to identify the laboratory sample tested; b) confirmation that the test was carried out in accordance with this standard; c) any deviation from this standard; d) the penetration of the polish at 20 C as the average of the three readings in 3.9; and e) the penetration of the polish at 35 C as the average of the three readings in 3.10.
