、t Foreword (This Foreword is informative only and is not part of this Standard. ) This document comes from TIA Project No. 4507, formulated under the cognizance of TIA FO-6.7, Subcommittee on Fiber Optic Cables. This FOTP is part of the series of test procedures included within Recommended Standard

、TINE IA-455. There are two annexes. Annex A is normative and is considered a part of this standard; Annex B is informative. Key words: optical cable, bending. iii TINE IA-455-88 This page left blank. iv TINE IA-455-88 FOTP - 88 Fiber Optic Cable Bend Test 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Intent The intent of this

、 bend test is to determine the degree of cable degradation that will occur if the cable is statically bent around a corner of a given radius. Cables that are most likely to be subject to this type of bend in actual installation are building entrance cables, flexible cables and buried service type ca

、bles. 1.2 Potential failure modes Potential failure modes for this test include: a) Optical performance degradation. b) Cracking, splitting, or tearing of cable jacket. c) Cable jacket deformation resulting in a permanent degradation of protection to the optical core of the cable. 2 NORMATIVE REFERE

、NCES The following standards contain provisions, which through reference in this text constitute provisions of this Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this Standard are encouraged to inves

、tigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. ANSI and TIA maintain registers of currently valid national standards published by them. Test or inspection requirements may include, but are not limited to, the following references: FOTP-13 (TINEIA-455-1

FOTP-20 (TINEIA-455-20-1 994) Measurement of Change in Optical Transmittance. 1 TINE IA-455-88 3 APPARATUS 3.1 Test fixture The testing fixture shall consist of: 3.1.1 A bench equipped with a mandrel or a ,

、mer which provides a test edge that Ilows o e end of the cable to hang freely while providing a horizontal platform perpendicular to the free hanging end of the cable. The radius of the test edge shall be 15 times the cable diameter unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification (see Figures

、 1 and 2). 3.1.2 A restraining clamp located on the horizontal platform at least 20 cable diameters from the test edge which maintains the cable perpendicular to the test edge. The cable shall not slide in the clamp when axial force is applied as later described. Unless otherwise specified in the De

、jacket from each end of the cable as appropriate to allow access to the strength members (unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification) and to the optical fibers. Do not bend the fibers beyond their specified minimum bend radius at their exit point from the cable. The jacket shall not be c

、ut between the two marks of clause 5.2. 5.4 Attach fiber optic connectors or other appropriate optical loss interconnecting devices for optical measurements as required by the Detail Specification. 5.5 Take initial optical measurements as required by the Detail Specification. 5.6 At the location of

、the marks on the cable, attach the clamps to the cable strength members; alternatively, attach the clamps to the cable jacket (see Figure 2) when specified in the Detail Specification. Do not over clamp the cable, which would degrade the optical performance of the cable. 5.7 Place the cable in posit

、ion over the mandrel or corner so that the mandrel or corner is approximately centered between the clamps. 5.8 Apply the test mass to the unrestrained cable end. The magnitude of the test mass shall be as indicated in Table I unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification. Unless otherwise s

、pecified, the force shall be a static (dead weight) load applied gradually, but within a short time frame (Le., not dropped suddenly). Any resulting movement of the cable at the second clamp shall not exceed 50 mm (2 inches) per second. 4 TINE IA-455-88 Table I I Cable Diameter - Nominal Millimeters
