10、TION This Standard was formulated for the purpose of: (a) Promoting the interchangeability of splices (fiber and cable), and performance requirements. (b) Eliminating misunderstandings or confusion of product EIA Generic Specification EIA-5150000 applies to splices intended for use in optical wavegu

11、ide communications. This EIA Generic Specification will be coordinated with the work of the IEC Subcommittee 86B on Fiber Optic Interconnecting Devices and Passive. Components. 1.0 SCOPE 1.1 This EIA Generic Specification describes the mechanical and optical performance of optical fiber and optical

12、cable splices used in optical waveguide communications, Excluded are splices unique to the fiber and cable manufacturing processes. Splices covered by this Specification join optical waveguide to optical waveguide or join optical cable to optical cable or both. Optical waveguides joined may be made

14、A-5150000 Page 2 Splice subfamilies shall be described in Sectional Specifications that will reference this Generic Specification. A Blank Detail Specification, from which a splice manufacturer may develop a Detail Specification by filling in performance data on his product, will reference a corresp

15、onding Sectional Specification. Splices covered by this Specification fall into two general environmental categories Of protected environment splices, and non-protected environment splices. Splices can be permanent or semi-permanent. Definitions of these terms are found in paragraph 2.3. 1.2 Classif

16、ica tion The following classifications are intended to aid in fully describing a splice in a Sectional or Detail Specification. Additional terms may be used, if needed. Splice A splice is a device which permanently or semi- permanently joins optical fibers or optical cables, or both, in a protective manner and maintains fiber or cable structural

30、integrity. The term splice“ refers to the fiber splice, the cable structure splice, or the cable splice, and associated hardware. (See Figure 1.) Semi-permanent Splice A splice that can be separated, yet is intended for permanent engagement, as opposed to a connector which is intended for multiple e

31、ngagements and separ at ions. Fiber Splice A joint whose purpose is to couple optical power between two optical fibers. Cable Structure Splice or Splice Closure A joint whose purpose is to mechanically join two or more optical cables (exclusive of optical fibers). Cable Splice A cable structure spli

32、ce with an integral fiber splice or splices. Hybrid Splice A splice with fiber splice(s) and electrical conductor splice(s) . A splice part is any of the individual elements of a splice, including index matching fluids and adhesives that become a permanent part of the splice. Copyright Electronic In

34、ted by humans in their work or home activities. 2.3.9 Non-protected Environment Splice A splice designed to be used outside of a protected environment. High altitude, extreme temperatures, and water immersion are examples of a non-protected environment, and special tests may be required for these ex

35、treme environments. 2.3.10 Discontinuity Discontinuity is a transient, relatively sharp, short duration interruption or drop-out of the optical signal(s). The purpose of an optical discontinuity test is to confirm that the splice does not induce excessive signal discontinuities when subjected to phy

36、sical stress tests. 2.3.11 Mechanically Induced Modulation This is the dynamic, amplitude modulation of the optical signal(s) caused by physical stress at a splice. The purpose of a mechanically induced modulation test is to confirm that a splice does not excessively modulate the optical signal when

37、 subjected to physical stress tests. 2.3.12 Ambient Light Susceptibility Ambient light susceptibility is the interference of the optical signal(s) in a splice by ambient optical power incident upon its exterior. The purpose of an ambient light susceptibility test is to confirm the ability of a splic

38、e to exclude ambient optical power from its optical signal circuit (s) . 2.3.13 Mechanical Compatibility An inherent characteristic of the fiber, cable and splice existing when the fiber and cable possess the physical properties necessary (e.g. , size) for the splice to hold them together. Optical p

39、erformance, however, is not considered. That is, the splice may not meet the specified optical characteristics when joining fiber and cable types not used for qualification testing. 41、or identifiable pack. 2.4 Marking Each splice covered by this Specification and a Detail Specification that references this Specification shall be assigned a discrete part number. Part marking shall consist of the following: a. The EIA Part Specification Number b. The manufacturers source code , lot

42、 identification code, and date code assigned in accordance with EIA-476. C. The manufacturers part number. d. Warnings (if required) . Other markings may be applied to the fiber optic splice provided they do not interfere with, obscure, or confuse the identification specified above. Where size, surf

43、ace condition, or other design considerations will not allow full marking on the part, the markings shall be in order of preference shown above. Any required marking which cannot be applied to the splice shall be applied to the unit package. 3.0 QUALITY ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES 3.1 Qualification Approv

44、al Procedures The manufacturer shall produce test evidence to show confocmance to the specification requirements on the fixed sample size test schedule given in the Sectional Specification. The specimens taken to form the sample shall be selected at random from current production. Qualification Appr

45、oval shall bemaintained by regular demonstration of compliance with the requirements for Quality Conformance Inspection. Quality Conformance Inspectio

47、n The Blank Detail Specification(s) or the Sectional Speciication(s) shall prescribe the test schedule for Quality Conformance Inspection. This schedule may also specify the grouping, sampling, and periodicity for lot- by-lot and periodic inspection. inspection levels and required, more than one tes

If Certified Test Records When certified test records (CTR) are prescribed in the Sectional or Blank Detail Specification, that Specification shall outline the requirements to be listed in the CTR. 49、ditions and the cable and fiber preparations shall be as specified in the Detail Specification for the following test specimens: 3.5.1 Fiber Splice Specimen The test specimen for evaluating the characteristics of the joint holding the fibers together shall consist of two fibers joined together and fiber splice hardware. 3.5.2 Cable Structure Splice Specimen The test specimen for evaluating the characteristics of the joint holding t
