、OPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULUL has observed an increased demand for motors with characteristics outside the MG-1 definition forNEMA Design B. Motors which have NEMA Design B characteristics are industry-accepted generalpurpose
、motors suited for fire pump motor applications. The characteristics which make design B motors acceptable for fire pump motor applications areindependent of voltage. Expanding the scope provides requirements for installations where high currentsare a concern.Similarly, motors rated above 500 hp are b
、eing requested for larger installations. Since operatinglocked-rotor torques, break-down torques and pull-up torques level off after 350 horsepower, expandingthis above 500 hp (373 kW) provides requirements for these applications.2) Motors construction in accordance with IEC general purpose operatin
、g characteristics (IEC design N):IEC Design N motors are typically considered to be general purpose motors suitable for fire pump motorapplications and are considered comparable to NEMA Design B motors. They possess similarperformance characteristics and locked-rotor currents.3) Inclusion of single
、phase motors rated 1-1/2 to 10 hp:Some jurisdictions have begun using fire pump motors in residential or small commercial applicationswhere only single phase power is available. Expanding the scope provides requirements for these generalpurpose/pump applications (NEMA Design M compliant).4) Editoria
、l changes to clarify when locked-rotor current measurements are made and references to UL1004-8, the standard for inverter duty motors:UL 1004-5 originally referenced MG-1, Part 31 for motors that were intended to be supplied from aninverter. Since the publication of the standard, UL 1004-8, Inverte
、r Duty Motors, has been published andwas based on the requirements contained in MG-1, a reference to UL 1004-8 is being added.Additionally, the locked-rotor test is being adjusted from 12 sec. to 3 sec. The measured locked-rotorcurrent can drop significantly over the span of a 12 second locked-rotor
、 test due to heating. The purposeof the test was to ensure the maximum current did not unintentionally trip a breaker or other protectivedevice. By measuring the current within the first 3 seconds, the point of measurement is more consistent, and gives better certainty that a motor will work as inten
、ded in an emergency. Temperatures are notrecorded during this test and so there is no reduction to safety by making the measurement take place inthe smaller timeframe.Lastly, since the locked-rotor/KVA codes are required by the National Electrical Code, these codes are notneeded in the UL standard.C
