It also introduces new clauseG.3.3 with requirements for luminaires with Edison-based lampholders that are intended for useexclusively
、 with LED lamps. The last sentence in G.3.1.2 was revised to clarify the existing requirement. Clause 19.8.7, which iscurrently normative for all incandescent luminaires, sets minimum lamp wattage levels for ceiling-mountedluminaires that use incandescent lamps, which addresses a common and potential
、ly dangerous misuse. It is not uncommon for end-users to use higher wattage lamps than permitted by the marking in order toget more light from their luminaires. This overlamping practice can lead to the thermal degradation oflampholders and electrical insulation. This degradation is particularly acut
、e with ceiling-mountedluminaires since the excess heat rising from the lamps will degrade the building wiring and electrical spliceinsulation in the junction box, typically located directly above the lamps. This potential risk of fire would be further exacerbated if a luminaire manufacturer were to s
、pecify a “lowwattage” lamp in order to comply with the temperature test, only for the end-user to severely overlamp theluminaire in order to get the amount of light they deem sufficient. Clause 19.8.7 was intended to mitigatethe risk from this misuse by requiring minimum test lamp wattages for ceili
、ng-mounted luminairesemploying certain Edison-based lamps.STANDARD NUMBER: UL 1598 -3-UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULClause G.3.3 was added to define requirements for a new class of luminaire: one that employsEdison-base lamps
、 but is only intended for LED lamps. The construction requirements are identical tothose for traditional incandescent luminaires. However, during the temperature test these luminaireswould be allowed to use de-rated incandescent lamps to simulate the expected thermal loading of the LEDlamps for whic
、h they will be exclusively marked.Using actual LED lamps as test loads would be problematic. There is currently no correlation betweenLED lamp shapes and minimum power consumption. In addition, many LED lamp designs incorporatecircuitry to reduce power to their arrays in cases of abnormal (elevated)
、 ambient operation. While this canbe a useful feature in actual use, it also means that the wattage dissipated over the 7.5 hour duration ofa temperate test may be significantly less than the wattage rating marked on the lamp, and the actualpower consumption will vary from lamp to lamp and from lumi
、naire to luminaire.Table G.3.3 enables temperature tests on these types of luminaires to be conducted using lamp loads thatare consistent in size and power consumption. The non-reflector test lamp configurations were selectedto represent those most strongly associated with a particular Edison lampho
、lder size. The reflector testlamps were chosen to represent those generally expected to radiate the most heat into the lampcompartment. The 10% difference between the wattage of the intended LED lamp and the actual test loadis intended to accommodate differences in lamp shape and distance from lamp
、compartment surfaces.Clause G.3.3 is intended to give luminaire manufacturers more flexibility since they would be able todesign and build luminaires with Edison-based lampholders for the lower thermal loads expected with LEDlamps. To address potential misuse, a marking would be added where visible
