3、ire.DECISION:(Existing requirements)91.8 Light assemblies91.8.1 An appliance intended for use in a cooking area and employing a light shall comply with theapplicable requirements of this standard and with the applicable requirements in the Standard forLuminaires, UL 1598.91.9 Glass rangehood surface

4、s91.9.1 Edges of glass accessible during normal use or maintenance shall be seamed, swiped,fire-polished, or similarly treated to eliminate sharpness.91.9.2 Glass shall be reliably secured so that it cannot be readily displaced during normal use and shallnot be less than 0.115 inch (2.92 mm) thick.9

5、1.9.3 With reference to 91.9.2, glass, having a dimension, including a diagonal, more than 12 inches(305 mm) shall be a non-shattering or tempered type:a) That complies with the requirements in the Standard for Performance Specifications andMethods of Test for Safety Glazing Materials Used in Buildi

6、ngs, ANSI Z97.1, Class A, orb) Shall comply with the tempered glass impact test of 92.8.(New)91.10 For a rangehood that is ceiling mounted and moves down toward the cooking surface when in use,and includes a luminaire that is ceiling mounted and does not move with the rangehood, a glass lens orglass

7、 shade that is intended for installation at 40 inches or higher above the cooking surface may complywith the following requirements instead of UL 507, 91.9.2-91.9.3:a. The glass shall comply with clauses 5.16.1 through 5.16.2.3 of UL 1598; andException: Tempered glass having exposed area greater tha

8、n 3226 cm2 (500 in2) can have2.92 mm (0.115 inch) minimum thicknessb. Instructions for mounting height per 93A

9、7.93A.7 For rangehood luminaires per 91.10, the installation instructions of the luminaire portion shallinclude a statement indicating 40 inches minimum clearance between the cooking surface and the bottompart of the lens or glass shade.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:UL 507 covers rangehoods, and has a spe

10、cific requirement that addresses light/luminaire assemblies inSection 91.8.A construction not anticipated by UL 507 is a rangehood that is capable of being raised and lowered fromthe ceiling surface, and provided with a luminaire module that is intended to be permanently mounted tothe ceiling above

11、the rangehood. The present requirements in UL 507 and referenced in UL 1598 addressa luminaire/light when an integral part of the rangehood intended to be near the cooking surface, but UL507 rangehood requirements did not anticipate this type of construction for a ceiling mounted luminaire“module” t

12、hat is sold with the rangehood and intended to be installed and wired together in the field, yetmounted separately from the rangehood.When the luminaire portion is ceiling mounted, the operating environment is not as severe as would be atthe bottom of a rangehood in close proximity to the cooking su

13、rface. Based on this particular type ofinstallation, the risk and potential hazards are to be addressed with a combination of the relevantrequirements from UL 507 and UL 1598, with greater allowance for constructions that would be permittedunder UL 1598 for a luminaire that was sold separately and i

14、ntended for mounting in a residential kitchenarea. These requirements in this CRD address the specific construction with consideration of theassociated risks based on the installation location of each “module” provided with the rangehood.These requirements represent present practice.Copyright 2017 U
