5、ents do not cover lighting strings intended to provide temporary illumination duringthe period of construction, remodeling, maintenance, repair, or demolition of buildings or structures, orsimilar activities, in accordance with the U.S. National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70, Article 590,which

8、equirements described elsewhere in thisStandard except as otherwise specified in this Supplement.SD3.2 Parallel-connected lighting strings are permitted to employ non-replaceable lamps with integrallampholders, or replaceable lamps with candelabra-screw (E12), intermediate-screw (E17), ormedium-scre

For string lights employing minimum16 AWG cord, or string lights employing 18 AWG with no load fitting, overcurrent protection is notrequired.SD5 Parallel-connected Supply ConnectionsSD5.1 The wire types and sizes shall comply with Supply Connections, Section 13, and Table 6.2, e
11、xceptthe conductor size shall be minimum 18 AWG. The cord type shall be minimum SPT-2W.SD5.2 For string lights employing medium screw lampholders, the cord that connects separatelampholders shall be a hard usage type (SJW or equivalent) and any cords for individual lampholders shallbe permitted to b
12、e in accordance with SD5.1.SD6 General RequirementsSD6.1 Each lampholder of a light set employing medium-screw lampholders shall be provided with a hookor similar means for hanging.SD6.2 Lights sets employing medium-screw incandescent lamps are permitted for outdoor use only.Lights sets employing me
13、dium-screw LED or Compact Fluorescent (CFL) lamps are permitted forindoor/outdoor use. When replaceable, LED and CFL lamps shall meet the requirements described in theStandard for Self-Ballasted Lamps and Lamp Adapters, UL 1993.SD6.3 The lamp envelope temperature requirements described in Temperatur
14、e Test, Section 43, are notapplicable for the medium screw lamps.SD6.4 Lampholders employing insulation piercing terminals shall additionally comply with the strainrelief/terminal temperature test described in SB18.4.SD6.5Medium screw lampholders shall comply with Supplement SB or shall be a weather
15、proof or wetlocation type lampholder complying with the performance requirements described in the Standard forLampholders, UL 496.SD6.6 To provide a seal against water, a medium screw lampholder shall be permitted to utilize a designin which the lampholder cavity has a depth greater than the maximum
16、 depth requirement specified in theStandard for Lampholders, UL 496, if the lampholder accommodates lamps of the intended type.SD6.7 Uninsulated live parts of a screw shell shall not be exposed above the rim of the lampholder cavityexcept during lamp replacement.SD6.8 A load fitting on a string ligh
17、t shall be provided with a closure or cover that is attached to the cordof the string light in proximity to the load fitting that renders all uninsulated live parts inaccessible. Thecover or closure shall be permanently marked “Insert in cord connector when not in use”, or equivalent.SD6.9 A product

19、UCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULSD8 Strain Relief TestSD8.1 An attachment plug, cord connector, parallel connected lampholder, splice or tap shall withstand apull of 30 lbf (133 N) for 18 AWG or larger cords and 20 lbf (89N) for cords 20 AWG and smaller. Theforce shall be applied for
20、 1 min to the cord or cable in a direction that is perpendicular to the plane of entryto the device. The device body shall not separate or break and internal parts shall not be adverselyaffected so as to result in a possible fire or electric-shock condition. The conductors shall not break andthe ins
21、ulation shall not be damaged (exhibit cuts, rips, or tears). Stress shall not be transmitted, by thepull, to wiring connections unless a factory connection is made by welding, riveting, crimping, or theequivalent. Soldering is considered equivalent if an offset or one or more right angle bends in th
22、econductor prevents a pull on the conductor from being transmitted directly to the connection. An unbrokenthrough conductor is also considered equivalent.SD8.2 If connections are not made by welding, riveting or the equivalent, special representative devicesare to be employed in which the internal c
23、onnections have been severed. Displacement of the conductors,conductor insulation, or outer jacket of a cord by 0.8 mm (0.031 in) or more is unacceptable unless thedisplacement would not have stressed the connections.SD8.3 Six representative devices are to be tested. The device is to be securely sup
24、ported by a rigid flatplate mounted horizontally. The plate is to have a hole just large enough for the conductors to passthrough. A pull is to be applied by means of a weight to the cord or cable in a direction perpendicular tothe plane of conductor entry. The force is to be applied gradually.SD9 F
25、lexing TestSD9.1 The test shall be conducted as described in the Standard except 1500 cycles shall be conducted.This test is not required on string lights employing jacketed flexible cords or on parallel cord for individuallampholders where the exposed cord length is 4 in. (10.16 cm) or less.SD10 Co
26、nditioning Test Prior to Rain TestSD10.1 Prior to the Rain Test, the cord of a string light employing medium screw lampholders shall bemade to rotate ten times to an angle of 90 degrees to each side of the center position, in a planeperpendicular to the direction at which it enters the lampholder. E
27、ach flexing cycle shall take place overapproximately 2 seconds, applying the minimum necessary pulling stress to the cord by gripping it 1 foot(30.5 cm) from the point where it enters the lampholder. Flexing shall occur to both the main supply cord(between lampholders) and for an individual lamphold
28、er supply cord.SD11 Abnormal Operation TestSD11.1 A string light shall not produce a fire or electric shock when operated continuously as describedin SD11.2.SD11.2 With the maximum rated wattage lamps in place, the light set shall be operated continuously atthe total rated wattage of the string. Eac
29、h lampholder is to be resting on a white tissue paper coveredsoftwood surface. A 3 A non-time-delay plug fuse is to be connected between earth ground and thegrounded conductor. The string is to be operated continuously until ultimate results have been observed.In most cases, continuous operation for
30、 7 hours will be necessary to determine that the ultimate resultshave been observed. This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug doesnot fit fully in the outlet, reverse
43、 the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Donot use with an extension cord unless plug can be fully inserted. Do not alter or replace theplug. To date,lighting strings could be covered under the scope of multiple product standards such as the Standard forSeasonal and Holiday Decorative Products, UL 588, for seasonal and holiday lighting; the Standard forPortable Electric Luminaires, UL 153, for general illumination; or the Standard for Temporary LightingStrings, UL 1088, for temporary lighting strings which are typically installed in construction enviro
