18、seinahighperformancegeneral purposemultistationnetworkandisdesignedforefficientoperationwithapeakdatarateof 100megabitspersecond.Itusesatokenringarchitecture.ThispartofISO/IEC9314extends thebasicFDDIbyallowingbothmultimodeandsinglemodefibre,(MMFandSMF respectively),astransmissionmedia.ThebasicFDDIpr
19、ovidesforhundredsofstations operatingoveranextentofmanykilometers.Theindividuallinklengthssupportedbythebasic FDDIarelimitedtotwo(2)kilometersbythecharacteristicsofthemultimodefibreitspecifies. ThisextensiontothebasicFDDIstandardallowslinkstoabout60kilometersdependingon cableplantcharacteristics,bym
20、akingitpossibletoincludesinglemodefibrelinksina standardFDDInetwork. TheSinglemodePhysicalLayerMediumDependent(SMFPMD)specifiesthelowersublayer ofthePhysicalLayerfortheFDDI.Assuch,itpresentsthespecificationsforconformingFDDI attachmentdevicesattheinterfacetothesinglemodeopticalnetwork.Thisincludespo
21、wer levelsandcharacteristicsoftheopticaltransmitterandreceiver,interfaceopticalsignal requirementsincludingjitter,theconnectorreceptaclefootprint,therequirementsof conformingFDDIsinglemodefibrecableplants,andthepermissibleBER. SMFPMDprovidesforextensionofthesetofbasicstandardsforFDDIthatincludesthe
22、followingstandards: a) AMediaAccessControl(MAC)standard,whichspecifiesthelowersublayeroftheData LinkLayerforFDDI,includingaccesstothemedium,dataframing,addressing,anddata checking; b) APhysicalMediumDependent(PMD)standardwhichisthealternativestandardtothis document,whenusingMMFratherthanSMF; c) APhy
23、sicalLayerProtocol(PHY)standard,whichspecifiestheuppersublayerofthe PhysicalLayerforFDDI,includingencode/decode,clocking,anddataframing; d) AStationManagement(SMT)standard,whichspecifiesthelocalportionofthesystem managementapplicationprocessforFDDI,includingthecontrolrequiredforproper operationofast
24、ationinanFDDIring; Theideaofdevelopinganewhighspeeddatainterfaceforcomputersbasedontheuseof opticalfibrewasfirstraisedinanOctober1982meeting.Anadhoctaskgroupwasformedto examinetheissuesandthreeprojectproposals,fortheFDDIPhysical,DataLink,andNetwork layersweredevelopedandsubsequentlyapproved. Initial
25、proposalsfortheMediaAccessControl(MAC),correspondingtothelowerhalfofthe DataLinkLayer,andforthePhysical(PHY),correspondingtothePhysicalLayer,wereboth submittedinJune1983.FDDIadoptedthestructuresoftheISO/IEC8802Series,andearly workindicatedthattheFDDIMACcouldbedevelopedtooperateundertheLogicalLink Co
26、ntrol(LLC)describedintheISO/IEC8802series.Thisdecision,ineffect,obviatedthe developmentofLLCorNetworkLayerstandardsuniquetoFDDI.MAChasbeenpublishedas ISO/IEC93142. Inearly1984aneedwasrecognizedforaseparateStationManagement(SMT)document. ThisdevelopmentworkremainsunderwayonISO/IEC93146. Recognizingth
27、atfibretechnologywasnotyetthensufficientlysettledandthatcriticalFDDI developmentworkwasdependentupontheprotocolportionsofthePHYdocument,the PhysicalLayerwasdividedintotwosublayers(PHYandPMD),withthePHYdocument retainingonlytheuppersublayerofthePhysicalLayer.PHYwassubsequentlypublishedas ISO/IEC93141

Meanwhile,issuesconcerningthelowersublayerofthePhysicalLayerformultimodeFDDI werebeingaddressed.ThatworkledtothepublicationofISO/IEC93143FDDIPMD.6 93144ISO/IEC:1999(E) InJune1987theneedwasrecognizedforFDDItosupportstationtostationdistanceslonger thanthe2kilometerslimitoftheMMFdesign.Theprojectobje

FDDIprovidesahighbandwidth(100megabitspersecond)generalpurposeinterconnection
31、amongcomputersandperipheralequipmentusingafibreopticwaveguideasthetransmission medium.TheFDDImaybeconfiguredtosupportasustainedtransferrateofapproximately 80 megabits(10megabytes)persecond.TheFDDImaynotmeettheresponsetime requirementsofallunbufferedhighspeeddevices.TheFDDIestablishestheconnection am
32、ongmanystationsdistributedoverdistancesofseveralkilometersinextent.Defaultvalues forFDDIwerecalculatedonthebasisof1000physicalconnectionsandatotalfibrepath lengthof200kilometers(seetheMACStandardISO/IEC93142orISO/IEC93148). TheFDDIconsistsof: 1) ThePhysicalLayerMediumDependent(PMD)isspecifiedinfoura
33、lternativestandards: a)ISO/IEC93143(FDDIPMD)correspondingtomultimodefibre(MMF)whichactually means“FDDIMMFPMD“. b)ThisstandardISO/IEC93144(SMFPMD)whichcontainstherequirementsforsingle modefibre(SMF)physicalconnectionsbetweenstations. c)ISO/IEC93149(FDDILCFPMD),analternativelowercostmultimodefibre(LCF
34、)for shorterdistances. d) ISO/IEC931410(FDDITPPMD),acoppertwistedpair(TP)alternative. AnFDDIringcanbemadeupofallthesealternatives.(Forsomerestrictionssee6.4). ThePMDprovidesallservicesnecessarytotransportasuitablycodeddigitalbitstream fromstationtostation.TheSMFPMDspecifiesthepointofinterconnection

SMFPMDincludesthefollowing: i) Theopticalpowerbudgetsfortwo(2)categoriesofActiveOutputandActiveInput Interfacesusingsinglemode fibreopticcablesandopticalbypassswitches
36、 ii) TheMICReceptaclemechanicalmatingrequirementsincludingthekeyingfeatures iii) Thesinglemodefibreopticcablerequirements iv) TheservicesprovidedbyPMDtoPHYandSMT 2) APhysicalLayerProtocol(PHY),whichprovidesconnectionbetweenmultimodeorsingle modePMDandtheDataLinkLayer(DLL).PHYestablishesclocksynchron
37、izationwiththe upstreamcodebitdatastreamanddecodesthisincomingcodebitstreamintoan equivalentsymbolstreamforusebythehigherlayers.PHYprovidesencodingand decodingbetweendataandcontrolindicatorsymbolsandcodebits,mediumconditioning andinitializing,thesynchronizationofincomingandoutgoingcodebitclocks,andt
38、he delineationofoctetboundariesasrequiredforthetransmissionofinformationtoorfrom higherlayers.InformationtobetransmittedontheinterfacemediumisencodedbythePHY intoagroupedtransmissioncode. 3) ADataLinkLayer(DLL),whichcontrolstheaccessingofthemediumandthegeneration andverificationofframechecksequences
39、toassuretheproperdeliveryofvaliddatatothe8 93144ISO/IEC:1999(E) higherlayers.DLLalsoconcernsitselfwiththegenerationandrecognitionofdevice addressesandthepeertopeerassociationswithintheFDDInetwork.Forpurposeofthe PHY,referencestoDLLaremadeintermsoftheMediaAccessControl(MAC)entity,which isthelowestsub
40、layerofDLL. 4) AStationManagement(SMT),whichprovidesthecontrolnecessaryatthestationlevelto managetheprocessesunderwayinthevariousFDDIlayerssuchthatastationmaywork cooperativelyonaring.SMTprovidesservicessuchascontrolofconfiguration management,faultisolationandrecovery,andschedulingprocedures. ThesetofFDDIstandardsspecifiestheinterfaces,functionsandoperationsnecessaryto insureinteropera
