、acity are more likely to succeed in many areas of life. They tend to be more optimistic, healthier, employable and have better relationships.Although EQ has been a buzzword for the past few decades, its roots can be traced back 2,000 years to Plato when he wrote, “All learning has an emotional base“

、 However, until recently, most educators, scientists and philosophers had been working to disprove this, believing that emotions keep us from focussing and making sound decisions. Intelligence was thought to be perfection and emotion was of no appreciable value.A number of EQ tests have been develo

、ped. The oldest instrument is Bar-Ons EQ-I, which has been around for over ten years. It evolved out of the need to see why some people possessed better emotional well-being than others. It was essentially designed as a clinical test rather than an occupational one. The EQ-I has been vigorously test

、ed and so its strengths and shortcomings, its reliability and its convergent and discriminant validity are known to researchers. However, less is known about its predictive validity in work situations.A second instrument is the Multifactor Emotional Intelligence Scale, which is a test of ability rat

、her than a self-report measure. In a series of tasks test takers are assessed on their ability to perceive, identify, understand, and work with emotion. Although there is no evidence of predictive validity, there is some for constructive validity, convergent validity, and discriminant validity.A thi

、rd instrument which is in the early stages of development is the Emotional Competence Inventory (ECI). It does, however, use a considerable number of competencies from earlier tests. These earlier items had been “validated against performance in hundreds of competency studies of managers, executives

、 and leaders in North America, Italy, and Brazil“. However, currently there is no research supporting the predictive validity of the ECI.Another measure that has been promoted commercially is the EQ Map. Although there is some evidence for convergent and divergent validity, the data have been repor

、ted in a rather ambiguous fashion. Most research comparing EQ and IQ has been carried out in job performance. Studies suggest that IQ, at most, accounts for 25% of job performance with some suggesting it only accounts for 4%. That is not to say that a high IQ is not needed to get a doctorate, rather

、that persistence in the face of difficulty and getting along with colleagues will ultimately lead to a successful career. It has been shown that a wide range of emotional intelligence competencies (and a narrow range of cognitive ones) distinguished top performers from average ones, including executi

The competencies that distinguished most powerfully were Achievement Drive, Developing Others, Adaptability, Influence, Self-Confidence, and Leadership. The one cognitive competence that distinguished as strongly was Analytic Thinking.Peop

、le who possess a high EQ are interested in listening to other peoples feelings and not afraid to express their own. They are not dominated by negative emotions such as fear, worry, guilt, shame, embarrassment, obligation, disappointment, hopelessness, dependency, victimisation or discouragement. Mos

、t importantly, they have the ability to balance feelings with reason, logic and reality. Those who demonstrate a low emotional intelligence generally do not take responsibility for their feelings but blame others instead. These people have a tendency to attack, blame, command, criticise, interrupt,

、invalidate, lecture, or advise others. They can not tell you why they feel the way they do.Although some claim that EQ is innate, suggestions on developing your EQ have been put forth. People need to take responsibility for their own emotions and happiness. This involves identifying and analysing fe

、elings, particularly fears, desires and unmet emotional needs and then expressing such feelings. It is equally important, however, to ask others how they feel.It is possible for people of all ages to become more socially and emotionally competent. However, the principles for developing this type of

、competence differ greatly from those that have guided much training and development practice in the past. Developing emotional competence requires that we unlearn old habits of thought, feeling, and action that are deeply ingrained, and grow new ones. Such a process takes motivation, effort, time, s

、upport and sustained practice.Given that employers are looking for emotional intelligence capacities in those they hire, EQ should be developed by both schools and families. The most forward-thinking educators and parents recognise the importance of emotional intelligence for the vitality of an econ

、 rivalled by tropical rainforests. However, in recent decades, just like the rainforests, reefs and their inhabitants have been declining drastically in number. Although natural factors such as predators, cyclones and disease have always had an effect on marine wildlife and habitats, human actions n

、eed to shoulder most of the blame for this destruction.B Fishing is one such action which is directly and indirectly harming marine wildlife population numbers. The setting of nets accounts for the death of turtles, dugongs, whales and dolphins. Turtles, for example, can hold their breath for up to

、an hour, however, if they get caught in a trawl net from a trawler, their oxygen is usually depleted within 15 minutes as it is an enforced submergence. Dugongs, on the other hand, can only hold their breath for a maximum of 8 minutes so once they become entangled in certain types of mesh nets, they

、 drown. Shark nets (nets set to catch sharks near bathing areas) have also been responsible for the death of more than 4,000 turtles, 500 dugongs and 700 whales and dolphins since the Queensland Shark Control Programme commenced in 1962 at many Queensland beaches. Fish netting and illegal hunting ar

、e the biggest contributors to the degradation of marine wildlife. However, it is difficult to estimate the extent to which illegal activities adversely affect marine wildlife populations.C All vessels, including commercial ships, fishing vessels, and recreational craft endanger marine wildlife. The

、increasing number of high-speed vessels operating in reef waters frequented by marine wildlife increases the risk of collisions, which often result in death or injury. Vessels may also scare marine wildlife from their feeding areas or disrupt social bonds in populations. In some circumstances, stres

、s is suspected of contributing to illnesses in dugongs.D While fishing and boating mainly cause harm to the marine wildlife, coastal development is a major threat to the coral reefs. An increasing number of seaside wetlands along northeastern Australias coastal plain have been replaced by croplands

、and development. These wetlands are the natural filters of fresh water coming from the continent. Deforestation, overgrazing by livestock, and run-off from towns, farms, and industries upstream result in more sediments and nutrients flowing out towards the Great Barrier Reef. The total has quadruple

、d since colonial times. Corals can endure in surprisingly murky water provided that sediments can be periodically swept off by tides and currents. However, it is the nutrients that actually wreck the reef. Anything beyond moderate levels of nitrogen hurts maturation and reproduction in corals.E The

、dumping of garbage is prohibited inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Yet, increasing amounts of debris, such as plastic objects and fishing line, enter the marine environment every year. The consequences of these thoughtless actions can mean that turtles can entangle themselves in discarded l

、ines or even mistakenly ingest plastic bags as food. A small number of turtles die or float ashore on Queensland beaches every year as a result of this. Furthermore, debris on nesting beaches can also cause harm or even death to a turtle. Such refuse interferes with a turtles ability to dig an egg chamber and deposit eggs and may prevent hatchlings from reaching the sea. Turtles are not the only victims
