、 Requirements applicable to all pins covered by this standard are stated in Section1; Sections 2 and 3 contain particular requirements for pins machined from bar and those produced by a cold-heading process. Section 1. General requirements 2 Manufacture The pin heads shall be concentric with the axi
、s of the shanks and the radius under the heads shall run smoothly into the face of the head and shank without any stop or discontinuity. Split pin holes shall be drilled clean and free from burrs. 3 Dimensions All finished pins, after the application of the anti-corrosion coating, shall conform to t

Table 1 Maximum permissible bow 8 Identification and marking a) All pins of 0.1898 in. nominal size and over shall have the appropriate part number seeClause8 c) applied on the upper face of the head. b) All pins unde
、r 0.1898 in. nominal size shall be made into parcels which shall have the number of this British Standard and the appropriate part number seeClause8 c) clearly stated on the labels. c) The British Standard number shall not be applied on the pins, but shall be used for the purpose of specifying pins
、on drawings and for ordering the parts. For example, the complete part reference number for a 1 / 4in. pin of lengthL= 0.55in. for ordering etc. is BSSP113 E5 1 / 2but the corresponding markingon the pin will be E5 1 / 2 . Section 2. Particular requirements for pins machined from bar 9 Material The
、pins shall be machined from high tensile steel bars complying with the requirements of the latest issue of BSS94, BSS96, BSS114, or BSS117. Section 3. Particular requirements for pins cold-headed from wire 10 Manufacture The pins shall be made by an approved cold-heading process from wire complying

During each period of continuous heat treatment not exceeding8 hours, at least one test sample shall be selected. This test sample
、shall be either one of the pins of the largest diameter that have been heat treated during this period, or a length of wire from which these pins have been made and which has been hardened and tempered with the pins represented. b) Pins hardened by a continuous process or in batches, and tempered in
、 batches comprising one tempering furnace charge. Sufficient test samples shall be hardened with the pins to enable at least one test sample to be tempered with each batch. This test sample shall be either one pin of the largest diameter from the tempered batch, or a length of wire from which the la

、hen the dimensions of a test sample are such that an impact test cannot be made from it, a nicked fracture test shall be made instead. The test shall be made as follows: The test sample shall be nicked or sawn so that the area of the portion to be fractured is not less than one-half of the original
、sectional area and shall be broken by the least possible number of blows. The fractured surfaces shall be free from defects. 14 Re-tests If any test piece fails to meet the mechanical test requirements, two further samples, selected as in Clause12, shall be submitted to the mechanical tests specifie
、d in Clause13. If either of these test pieces fails to meet the mechanical test specified the pins represented may be rejected or, at the request of the manufacturer, shall be re-heat treated and re-tested in accordance with Clauses12 and 13 15 Hardness test a) A Brinell or a diamond pyramid hardnes
、s test shall be made on the test sample and on selected heat treated pins from each period or tempered batch, in order to verify the uniformity of the heat treatment. The number of hardness tests, and the results obtained, shall be to the satisfaction of the Inspecting Authority. b) The Brinell test
、 shall be carried out in accordance with BS240 1)and the diamond pyramid test shall be carried out in accordance with BS427 2) . All tests on the same batch shall be made by the same method and under the same conditions of loading. 16 Magnetic flaw detection All the pins, or a selected percentage of
