、h J. Gawin Edward W. Rummel The primary purpose of this standard is to provide command interchange guidelines for suppliers of computer assisted retrieval (CAR) systems and software. Two levels of CAR commands are discussed. Only the basic level CAR commands are a part of this standard. 1. The basic

、 level CAR commands provide an elementary, com- monly available command structure standard to support com- munications between receiving microfilm retrieval systems and sending host software. Only one command is permitted within a single command string. Suppliers may state compliance with the basic

、level standard under the following conditions: a. Hardware suppliers must support at least all basic level commands listed to declare compliance. Additional com- mands may be optionally supported. b. Software suppliers must support an implementation subset which executes no commands other than the l

、isted basic level commands to declare compliance. As a minimum, each software generated CAR command must contain both a start string and end character. Other basic level com- mands are optional. 2. Advanced level commands discussed in Appendix B are not a part of this standard. They are an extended

The commands described within this standard are not univer- sally implemented at present. Users are urged to obtain clarifica- tion from CAR equipment

、 and software suppliers before implementing their applications. Suppliers are urged to make every effort to adopt these standards in future system and software designs and documentation. i AIIM MSYO 87 m 10123Y8 0000379 7 m Host computer software which communicates to microfilm re- trieval systems s
