、tate or District: Fourth Quarter 2014 . 50 Appendix A: FOOTNOTES . 52 Appendix B: METHODOLOGY . 54 Appendix C: DRILLING TERMS AND DEFINITIONS . 58 PrefaceIn 1966 the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) expanded its statistical program to include development and exploratory drilling.

、Drilling data collected by the AAPG for wells drilled in 1966 were published monthly by The Oil & Gas Journal, and the AAPG published annual summaries. During 1967-1969, the AAPG continued to compile the drilling statistics published by API in the Quarterly Review of Drill Statistics (QRD) and annua

、lly in the AAPG Bulletin. In January 1970 API assumed the responsibility for the collection and publication of drilling statistics for the United States. For the years 1970-1985, the data collection procedures used by API were essentially the same as those originally developed by the AAPG. The Unite

、d States was divided into 30 districts. For each district there was an API Respondent responsible for reporting the initial well information to API. This information was reported either on an API well ticked or in machine-readable format for direct computer entry. In January 1986, to relieve the ind

、ustry reporting burden, the API Respondent System was dissolved. Petroleum Information Corporation became the source for the basic well information for the API well and footage database. During 1967 through 1984, the statistics in the QRD were for completed wells reported to API during each quarter.

、 They did not reflect the total number of wells actually completed during the quarter. As drilling activity increased during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the lapse between the quarter the wells were completed and the quarter the wells were included in the published widened for reasons beyond the

、control of API. To provide more useful information to the data user community, the manner of presenting the data was changed in 1985. Beginning with the First Quarter 1985, the API Quarterly Completion Report (QCR) replaced the QRD. The data in the QCR classify wells according to the month they were

、 completed rather than the month they were reported, as was done previously. Since the well and footage data are often reported with a significant time lag, the data for a given period is subject to further change for some time in the future. Thus, to provide the data user with a measure of current

、activity, the QCR also includes quarterly estimates of total well completions and footage drilled. These estimates are for the current quarter and eight prior quarters and represent APIs best estimate of the total number and footage of wells actually completed in a given quarter. Beginning with the

、first quarter of 1995, the name of the report was changed from the Quarterly Completion Report to the Quarterly Well Completion Report to better reflect data content.
