、NSI/BHMA A156.21) The general classification of builders hardware includes a wide variety of items which are divided into several categories. To recognize this diversity, a sectional classification system has been established. Architectural Door Trim, Thresholds and Gasketing, is one such section an

、d this Standard is the result of the collective efforts of members of the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association, Inc. who manufacture these products. The total Product Standards effort is, therefore, a collection of sections, each covering a specific category of items. Strength and gasketing t

、ests, fastening systems and, where it has been necessary, material and dimensional requirements have been established to ensure safety and stability to which the public is entitled. There are no restrictions on design except for those dimensional requirements imposed for the reasons given above. Thi

、s Standard is not intended to obstruct but rather to encourage the development of improved products, methods and materials. The BHMA recognizes that errors will be found, items will become obsolete, and new products and methods will be developed. With this in mind, the Association plans to update, c

The BHMA numbers which indicate functions of thresholds do not identify size or design and are not intended to be used without necessary supplementary inf

EXPLANATION OF NUMBERING SYSTEM 9 APPENDIX A 13 5 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard establishes requirements for thresholds. Types are described

、with identifying numbers. Strength tests, fastening systems, and gasketing tests are included. 1.2 Tests described or referenced in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual use, results vary because of installation, maintenance, and environmental conditions. 2. DEFINITIONS

、2.1 Threshold A horizontal member installed beneath a closed door or in a wall opening. 2.1.1 Compressing Top Threshold A threshold with a compressible seal which seals against the bottom of the door. 2.1.2 Flat Saddle. A threshold with a flat top that is smooth or fluted. 2.1.3 Half Saddle A thresh

、s to inhibiting the passage of air, water, or air borne particles. 2.1.5 Rabbeted Threshold A threshold with an integral stop that a door closes against. May include a gasket. 2.1.6 Latching/Panic Thresholds A threshold with an integral stop that the door closes against and shaped to provide a latch

SI (metric) equivalents are approximate. 3.3 Tolerances Dimensions referenced in this Standard are nominal and are permitted to be reduced or exceeded at the manufacturers option within

、 commercially accepted practices 1/16 in (1.6 mm) unless otherwise indicated. 3.4 Screw Fasteners 3.4.1 Fasteners shall be of stainless steel, plated steel, or non-ferrous material with a finish compatible with the threshold. 3.4.2 The length of screws used shall be determined by the height of the t

、hreshold with a minimum of 3/4 in (19 mm) thread engagement in the floor or anchoring device used. 3.4.3 If wood screws are used, they shall be no smaller than number 10. 3.4.4 If machine screws are used, they shall be no smaller than number 10 and shall be furnished with anchors. 3.4.5 Thresholds a

、ffixed to the floor independent of any fastening affixing the threshold to the jamb shall have a minimum of one fastening per foot of threshold length spaced in accordance with the individual manufacturers practice with a minimum of three fastenings. 3.5 Thresholds used in fire door assemblies shall

TESTS REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Threshold Compressive Load Test for Standard Duty Thresholds (1000 lbf load) 4.1.1 Test Fixture Provide a loading device having a flat bed large enough to accept a threshold test specimen and that will not deflect when th

、e specified load is applied. The load shall be measured with a dial or digital gage having a combined calibration and reading accuracy within 2%. All threshold measurements are to be taken with a gage accurate within .001 in. (.025mm). Use a 1/4 in. (6.3 mm) thick cold rolled steel plate 3/4 in. (19

、 mm) wide and 3 in. (76.2 mm) long connected to a 3/4 in. (19 mm) diameter steel rod with a maximum length of 6 in. (152mm) for transferring the load to the threshold surface. The fixture shown in the Figure below shall be used to apply the load to the specimen surface, and with support on one side

、only to prevent the specimen from sliding. The swivel mount is intended to maintain full plate contact on sloping thresholds. 7 Suggested Standard Duty Test Fixture 4.1.2 Procedure Place a 12 in. (305mm) long threshold specimen on the flat bed. The before and after measurements shall be taken at the

、 same position. This single position shall be at the center of the length of the specimen and at the center of the widest span between two adjacent support points, including those which contact the bed under load. Orient the steel plate centered with the 3 in. (76mm) dimension in the direction of th

、e threshold length. Gradually apply a downward compressive load within 20 seconds 5 seconds until a reading of 1000 lbf (4448 N) is reached. After 15 minutes 30 seconds at the specified load, remove the load and re-measure the height of the specimen. Permanent set shall not exceed 0.040 in. (1.02mm)

、. 4.2 Threshold Compressive Load Test for Heavy Duty Thresholds (10,000 lbf load) 4.2.1 Test Fixture Provide a loading device having a flat bed large enough to accept a threshold test specimen and that will not deflect when the specified load is applied. The load shall be measured with a dial or dig

、ital gage having a combined calibration and reading accuracy within 2%. All threshold measurements are to be taken with a gage accurate within .001 in. (.025mm). Use a 3 in. (76.2 mm) thick cold rolled steel plate 1 in. (38.1 mm) wide and 3 in. (76.2 mm) long connected to a 1 in. (38.1 mm) diameter

、steel rod with a maximum length of 6 in. (152 mm) for transferring the load to the threshold surface. The fixture shall be configured to apply the load to the specimen surface, and with support on one side only to prevent the specimen from sliding. The swivel mount is intended to maintain full plate

、 contact on sloping thresholds. 4.2.2 Procedure HD Place a 20 in. (508 mm) long threshold specimen on the flat bed. The before and after measurements shall be taken at the same position. This single position shall be at the center of the length of the specimen and at the center of the widest span be

、tween two adjacent support points, including those which contact the bed under load. Orient the steel plate centered with the 3 in. (76.2 mm) dimension in the direction of the threshold length. Gradually apply a downward compressive load within 120 seconds 5 seconds until a reading of 10000 lbf (44.

、5 kN) is reached. After 5 minutes 30 seconds at the specified load, remove the load and re-measure the height of the specimen. Permanent set shall not exceed 0.040 in.
