、change their subnetwork point of attachment (SNPA) at will, and thus traditional forms of network connectivity and routing may not be used because their location (and therefore the route to reach them) may not be deduced from their network address.Mobility management is concerned with the maintenanc

、e of a location information database and routing of Network Protocol Data Units (NPDUs) based on this information. A closely related function is that of radio resource management, which is concerned with the discovery, selection and use of the most optimal radio channel available to the M-ES.2 Overv

、iew of Mobility2.1 Cells, Areas and DomainsThe geographic area over which CDPD Network service is available is subdivided into cells, areas and domains.TIA/EIA-732-500 Mobility Management50021234567891011121314151617181920212223242526272829303132333435363738394041424344454647484950515253545556575859

、60A cell is defined by the geographic area covered by a single Mobile Data Base Station (MDBS) or, in the case of sectorized cells, the coverage area of the sector. In any given cell or sector, there may be zero, one or more physical channels available for CDPD service. An MDBS may control multiple

、cells. An MDBS is under the control of a single Mobile Data Intermediate System (MD-IS). The combined geographic coverage of all MDBSs under the control of a single MD-IS defines a routing area subdomain, as shown in Figure 500-1. This serving area may cover multiple Cellular Geographic Service Areas

、 (CGSA) or it may be only part of a single CGSA. Mobility within a routing area subdomain uses different mechanisms than mobility between routing area subdomains.A CDPD domain is defined by the set of MD-ISs operated and administered by a single CDPD Service Provider. Mobility between CDPD Service P

、rovider domains is subject to service agreements between those CDPD Service Providers but, in principle, is no different from mobility between routing areas. In this specification, there is a correspondence between a geographic service area, defined by an MD-IS, and the ISO definition of routing doma

、ins, as defined in ISO-TR-9575 (OSI Routing Framework) and ISO-10589 (IS-IS Intra-domain Routing Protocol). The MD-IS may be classified as a Level 1 Intermediate System (IS), because it routes directly to End Systems (ESs) within its own area, and routes toward a Level 2 Intermediate System when the

、 destination is in a different area.FIGURE 500-1 Levels of Mobility Support: Cells, Areas and DomainsMDISMDISMDISISRouting AreaSubdomainESESESExternalSubnetworkDomainISISMDISService Provider YCDPD domainIScellcellcellISService Provider XCDPD domain5003Overview of Mobility TIA/EIA-732-500123456789101

The mobility information is manag

、ed and constrained within MD-ISs so that routing and relaying are transparent to all other systems internal and external to the CDPD Network.Support for mobility is provided at both Data Link Layer and Network Layer in the CDPD Network. a. Data Link Layer support for mobility provides Network Layer

、transparency over a group of cells forming a single routing domain (i.e., the service coverage area of an MD-IS)b. Network Layer support for mobility provides Transport Layer transparency to mobility over the entire CDPD Network.A key concept in CDPD mobile interworking is that every M-ES is logical

、ly a member of a fixed home area. The home area provides the anchor or mobility-independent routing destination area for ISs and ESs that are not mobile aware. The CDPD mobility functions provide for rerouting and forwarding messages from the home area to the current location of the M-ES.Mobility ma

、nagement is composed of three processes:a71 Cell selectionCell selection allows an M-ES to discover, select and maintain the most optimal channel available. When an M-ES decides the current channel no longer provides the required level of service, a new channel is selected from those available. Cell

、 transfer procedures are initiated to notify the network of the change. Cell selection is a function of Radio Resource Management (RRM), described in Part 405.a71 Location updateA distributed location information base is maintained that records the current serving area of each M-ES and is updated as

、 result of the cell transfer procedures.a71 Redirection and forwardingMessages that are destined for M-ESs are redirected from an MD-IS in the home area by forwarding to the MD-IS at the current serving area. The serving MD-IS completes the delivery by routing to the current cell in which the intend

、ed M-ES is located.TIA/EIA-732-500 Mobility Management50041234567891011121314151617181920212223242526272829303132333435363738394041424344454647484950515253545556575859603 Mobility Management and Network Elements3.1 Mobile End System (M-ES)Each M-ES is aware of its location (i.e., a cell), based on t

、he channel stream it is currently using. When the M-ES moves to another cell, it notifies the network by indicating a change to the channel stream used in the new cell. The M-ES registers its NEI with the CDPD Network through the Mobile Network Registration Protocol (MNRP). When registered with the

、CDPD Network, an M-ES is a (transitory) member of a current serving area subdomain; that is, it has a serving MD-IS.Each M-ES is identified by one or more unique Network Entity Identifiers (NEIs), which are used to route messages to the M-ES. Each NEI has a single home subdomain; that is, the NEI ho

、me MD-IS. These home subdomains may or may not be the same. When operating in its home area, the serving and home subdomains for an M-ES are the same; they are different when the M-ES is outside its home area.3.2 Mobile Data Intermediate System (MD-IS)MD-ISs perform routing functions based on additional knowledge of the current location of M-ESs. MD-ISs are the only network-relay systems that have any knowledge of mobility and operate a CDPD-specific Mobile Network Location Protocol (MNLP) to exchange location information. The MD-IS performs two distinct mobility routing funct
