Scope*1.1 This specification covers five grades of zinc-5 %aluminum-mischmetal (Zn-5 Al-MM) alloy-coated, steel wirest

3、rand, composed of a number of round, steel wires, with fourweights of Zn-5 Al-MM alloy coatings, suitable for use asguys, messengers, span wires, and for similar purposes. Theproduct is intended for applications requiring corrosion resis-tance and formability.1.2 The five grades covered are as follo

4、ws:1.2.1 Utilities,1.2.2 Common,1.2.3 Siemens-Martin,1.2.4 High-strength, and1.2.5 Extra high-strength,1.2.6 Minimum breaking strengths of strand for each gradeare described in Section 7.1.3 The four weights of coatings are: Class1 and Classes A,B, and C. Minimum weights of Zn-5 Al-MM alloy aredescr

Ordering Information4.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following information:4.1.1 Quantity of strand in feet metres,4.1.2 Nominal strand diameter, number of wires, grade, andminimum breaking strength of strand (Section 6 and

10、Table 1),4.1.3 Weight (class) of Zn-5 Al-MM alloy coating (Section10 and Table 2), and4.1.4 Length of strand in coils or on reels (Section 18).4.1.5 ASTM designation and year of issue as A 855 for inchpound and A 855M for SI units.5. Materials and Manufacture5.1 Base MetalThe base metal shall be ste

15、his specifica-tion.5.2 Coating Bath AnalysisThe bath metal used in continu-ous hot-dip Zn-5 Al-MM alloy-coating shall meet the chemicalcomposition limits specified in Specification B 750.5.2.1 For a two-step coating operation where the firstcoating is zinc (hot-dip galvanized or electrogalvanized) t

16、hefinal bath may have an aluminum content of up to 7.2 %, toprevent depletion of the aluminum content of the bath.5.2.2 Method of AnalysisThe determination of chemicalcomposition shall be made in accordance with suitable chemi-cal (see Test Method E 47 for tin) ICP Argon Plasma Spectro-metric (see T

17、est Method E 1277) or other methods. In case ofdispute, the results secured by Test Method E 1277 shall be thebasis of acceptance.5.2.3 A standard practice of X-ray fluorescence spectrom-etry for determination of cerium and lanthanum in a zinc-5 %aluminum-mischmetal alloy has been established by the

18、 Inter-national Lead Zinc Research Organization (see Standard Prac-tice GF-1). In case of dispute, the results secured by TestMethod E 1277 shall be the basis of acceptance.6. Stranding6.1 Unless otherwise specified, strand shall have a left lay. Aleft lay is defined as a counter-clockwise twist awa

All wires shall be stranded with uniform tension.Stranding shall be sufficiently close to ensure no appreciablereduction in diameter when stressed to 10 % of the minimumbreaking strength.6.2 The 3-wire strand shall co

31、nsist of three wires concen-trically twisted with a uniform pitch of not less than 14 normore than 20 times the specified nominal diameter of thestrand.6.3 The 7-wire strand shall consist of a center wire with a6-wire layer concentrically twisted over it with a uniform pitchof not more than 16 times

32、 the specified nominal diameter of thestrand.6.4 The 19-wire strand shall consist of a center wire with a6-wire layer concentrically twisted over it, having a right layand a uniform pitch of not more than 16 times the nominaldiameter of this 7-wire core. The nominal diameter of this7-wire core shall

33、 be considered to be three times the nominaldiameter of the wires. A 12-wire outer layer, having a left layshall be concentrically twisted over the 7-wire core and shallhave a uniform pitch of not more than 16 times the specifiednominal diameter of the strand.6.5 The 37-wire strand shall consist of

34、a center wire with a6-wire layer concentrically twisted over it having a left lay anda uniform pitch of not more than 16 times the nominal diameterof this 7-wire inner core. The nominal diameter of this 7-wireinner core shall be considered to be three times the nominaldiameter of the wire. An interm

35、ediate layer of 12 wires havinga right lay shall be concentrically twisted over this 7-wire coreand shall have a uniform pitch of not more than 16 times thenominal diameter of this 19-wire core. The nominal diameterof this 19-wire core shall be considered as five times thenominal diameter of the wir

36、es. An 18-wire outer layer, havinga left lay shall be concentrically twisted over the 19-wire coreand shall have a uniform pitch of not more than 16 times thespecified nominal diameter of the strand.6.6 All wires in the strand shall lie naturally in their truepositions in the completed strand and, w

37、hen the strand is cut,the ends shall remain in position to be readily replaced by handand then remain in position. This may be accomplished by anymeans or process, such as preforming, post forming, or formsetting.7. Breaking Strength and Weight7.1 The approximate weight per unit length of strand and

38、the minimum breaking strength of the finished strand shall beas specified in Table 1.7.2 A test in which the breaking strength is below theminimum specified and which may have been caused by theslipping of the specimen in the jaws of the testing machine, bybreaking within the jaws or within 1 in. 25

39、.4 mm of the jaws,or by the improper socketing of a specimen shall be disre-garded and another sample from the same coil or reel shall betested. Tests shall be made on lengths of strand that do notcontain wire joints or splices.8. Elongation8.1 The elongation of the strand in 24 in. 610 mm shall ben

40、ot less than that specified in Table 3.8.2 The elongation shall be determined as the percentincrease in separation between the jaws of the testing machinefrom the position after application of the initial load to theposition at the initial failure in the test specimen. The separa-tion of the jaws of

41、 the testing machine shall be approximately2 ft when under an initial load equal to 10 % of the requiredminimum breaking strength of the strand. The elongationvalues shall be recorded only for specimens that break over 1in. from the jaws of the testing machine. Additional samplesshall be taken from

42、the same coil or reel when the previoustests are to be disregarded.8.3 Elongation tests shall be made on lengths of strand thatdo not contain wire joints or splices.9. Ductility of Steel9.1 The Zn-5 Al-MM alloy-coated wire shall not fracturewhen wrapped at a rate not exceeding 15 turns per minute in

43、 aclose helix of at least two turns around a cylindrical mandrel.The mandrel diameter for testing Common and Siemens-Martin Grade strand shall be equal to the nominal diameter ofthe individual wires of the strand. The mandrel diameter forUtilities, High-Strength, and Extra-High Strength Gradestrand,

44、 shall be equal to three times the nominal diameter of theindividual wires of the strand.10. Weight of Coating10.1 The weight of Zn-5 Al-MM alloy-coating shall be notless than specified in Table 2.10.2 The weight of the Zn-5 Al-MM coating shall bedetermined by a stripping test in accordance with Tes
