Scope1.1 This specification covers bare rope-lay-stranded con-ductors having concentric-stranded members made from roundcopper wires, either uncoated or coated with tin, lead, orlead-alloy for use as electrical conductors (Explanatory Note 1and Note 2).1.2 Coated wires shall include only tho
4、se wires with fin-ished diameters and densities substantially equal to the respec-tive diameters and densities of uncoated wires.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound or SI units are to beregarded separately as standard. Each system shall be usedindependently of the other. Combining values from the tw

Joints5.1 Necessary joints in wires or in groups of wires shall bemade in accordance with accepted commercial practice, takingint
18、o account the size of the wire or group of wires as related tothe size of the entire conductor.5.2 Concentric-stranded members forming the completedconductor may be joined as a unit by soldering, brazing, orwelding.5.3 Joints shall be so constructed and so disposed through-out the conductor that the
19、 diameter or configuration of thecompleted conductor is not substantially affected, and so thatthe flexibility of the completed conductor is not adverselyaffected.6. Lay (Explanatory Note 3)6.1 Conductors of the same size and description furnishedon one order shall have the same lay.6.2 The length o
20、f lay of the outer layer of the rope-laystranded conductor shall be not less than 8 nor more than 16times the outside diameter of the completed conductor. Thelength of lay of the other layers shall be at the option of themanufacturer unless specifically agreed upon. The direction oflay of the outer
21、layer shall be left-hand, unless the direction oflay is specified otherwise by the purchaser. The direction of layof the other layers shall be reversed in successive layers, unlessotherwise agreed upon between the manufacturer and thepurchaser.6.3 The length of lay of the individual wires composing
22、thestranded members shall be not less than 8 nor more than 16times the outside diameter of that layer. Unless otherwisespecified, the direction of lay of the outer layer of wires shallbe at the option of the manufacturer. The direction of lay shallbe reversed in successive layers, unless otherwise a
23、greed uponbetween the manufacturer and the purchaser.7. Construction7.1 The area of cross section and the number and diameterof wires for a variety of strand constructions in general use areshown in Tables 1 and 2.8. Physical and Electrical Tests8.1 Tests for the electrical properties of wires compo
24、singconductors made from soft or annealed copper wire, bare orcoated, shall be made before stranding.8.2 Tests for the physical properties of soft or annealedcopper wire, bare or coated, may be made upon the wiresbefore stranding or upon wires removed from the completedstranded conductors, but need
25、not be made upon both. Careshall be taken to avoid mechanical injury and stretching whenremoving wires from the conductor for the purpose of testing.8.3 The physical properties of wire when tested beforestranding shall conform to the applicable requirements of 11.1.8.4 The physical properties of wir
26、es removed from thecompleted stranded conductor shall be permitted to vary fromthe applicable requirements of 11.1 by the following amounts:(Explanatory Note 4):8.4.1 Average of Results Obtained on All Wires TestedThepercent minimum elongation may be reduced by the value of5 % from the values requir
27、ed for unstranded wires as specifiedby Specifications B3, B33,orB189, as applicable. Forexample, where the unstranded wire specification requiresminimum elongation of 30 %, wire of that material removedfrom Specification B173 stranded conductor shall meet aminimum elongation value of 25 %, a value 5
28、 % reduction.8.4.2 Results Obtained on Individual WiresThe percentminimum elongation may be reduced by the value of 15 %from the values required for unstranded wires as specified bySpecifications B3, B33,orB189, as applicable. For example,where the unstranded wire specification requires minimumelong
29、ation of 30 % wire of that material removed fromSpecification B173 stranded conductor shall meet a minimumelongation value of 15 %. If the reduction results in minimumelongation of less than 5 %, a minimum of 5 % shall apply.8.5 In the event that the requirements prescribed in 8.4.2 aremet, but thos
30、e prescribed in 8.4.1 are not met, a retest shall bepermitted wherein all wires of a conductor of 100 wires or less,or 100 wires selected at random throughout a conductor ofmore than 100 wires shall be tested for the purpose of finaldetermination for conformance to 8.4.8.6 Elongation tests to determ
31、ine compliance shall not bemade on the conductor as a unit.8.7 If a tinning, lead-coating, or lead-alloy-coating test isrequired, it shall be made on the wires prior to stranding.9. Density9.1 For the purpose of calculating mass, cross sections, etc.,the density of copper shall be taken as 8.89 g/cm
32、3(0.32117lb/in.3) at 20C (Explanatory Note 5).10. Mass and Resistance10.1 The mass and electrical resistance of a unit length ofstranded conductor are a function of the length of lay. Theapproximate mass and electrical resistance may be determinedusing the standard increments shown in Explanatory No
33、te 6.When greater accuracy is desired, the increment based on thespecific lay of the conductor may be calculated (ExplanatoryNote 7).10.2 The maximum electrical resistance of a unit ofstranded conductor shall not exceed 2 % over the nominal DCresistance shown in Table 1 and Table 2.
