、irection of lay of the outside layer of aluminumwires shall be right-hand.6.5 The direction of lay of the aluminum wires shall bereversed in successive layers.6.6 For the purpose of this specification the lay factor is thelength of lay of a given layer divided by its outside diameter.7. Construction

、7.1 The nominal aluminum cross-sectional area, the outsidediameter, the nominal number of aluminum wires, the numberof layers, the linear density, and the rated strength, of theshaped wire compact concentric-lay-stranded aluminumconductors, shall be as shown in Table 1 and Table 2.NOTE 3Exception to

、 7.1. Because the final design of a shaped wirecompact conductor is contingent on several factors such as layer diameter, wire width and thickness, and the like, the actual configuration of a givensize may vary between manufacturers. This might result in a slightvariation in the number of wires and n

、umber of layers, from that shown inTable 1 and Table 2, and also in the dimensions of the individual wires.8. Rated Strength of Conductor8.1 The rated strength of a conductor, as shown in Table 1and Table 2, shall be taken as the percentage, indicated in Table3, in accordance with the number of alum

、inum layers, of thesum of the wire strengths calculated from the specifieddiameter of the round wires having the same area as thetrapezoidal wires used in the manufacture of the conductor, andthe appropriate minimum average tensile strength given inSpecification B230/B230M.8.1.1 The rated strengths

、of conductors calculated in accor-dance with 8.1 and 8.3 are listed in Table 1 and Table 2.8.2 Tests to confirm that the rated strength of the conductoris met are not required by this specification, but shall be madeif agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser atthe time of placing an o

、rder. When tested, the breaking strengthof the conductor shall be not less than the rated strength iffailure occurs in the free length at least 1 in. (25 mm) beyondthe end of either gripping device, or shall be not less than 95 %of the rated strength if failure occurs inside or within 1 in. ofthe en

、d of either gripping device (Explanatory Note 2).8.3 Rated strength and breaking strength values shall berounded to three significant figures in the final value only, inaccordance with Practice E29.9. Density9.1 For the purpose of calculating mass per unit length,cross-sections, and the like, the de

、nsity of aluminum 1350 shallbe taken as 0.0975 lb/in.3(2705 kg/m3) at 20C.10. Mass and Electrical Resistance10.1 The mass per unit length and electrical resistance of aunit length of stranded conductor are a function of the length oflay. The approximate linear density and electrical resistance ofa s

、tranded conductor may be determined using the standardincrements shown in Table 4. When greater accuracy isdesired, the increment based on the actual lay of the conductormay be calculated (Explanatory Note 3).11. Variations in Area11.1 The area of cross-section of the aluminum wires of theconductor

、shall be not less than 98 % nor more than 102 % ofthe area specified in column 1 of Table 1 and Table 2. The totalarea of the aluminum wires in the conductor shall be deter-mined by Test Method B263. In applying this method, theincrement in linear density resulting from stranding may be theapplicabl

、e value specified in Table 4, or it may be calculatedfrom the measured dimensions of the sample under test. In caseof questions regarding area compliance, the actual lineardensity increment due to stranding shall be calculated.11.2 The diameter of the finished conductor shall be not lessthan 99 % no

、r more than 101 % of that shown in Table 1 andTable 2 when measured with a diameter tape between theclosing dies and the capstan of the strander.12. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance12.1 The conductor shall be clean and free from imperfec-tions not consistent with good commercial practice.13. Mech

、anical and Electrical Tests13.1 Tests for mechanical and electrical properties of alu-minum wires shall be made before stranding (Explanatory Note4).14.
