Physical Requirements6.1 At the time of delivery to the purchaser, units shallconform to the strength requirements prescribed in Table 2.NOTE 3The purchaser is the
、public body or authority, association, corporation, partnership, or individual entering into a contract or agree-ment to purchase or install, or both, concrete masonry units. The time ofdelivery to the purchaser is FOB plant when the purchaser or purchasersagent transports the concrete masonry units,
、 or at the time unloaded at theworksite if the manufacturer or manufacturers agent transports theconcrete masonry units.6.2 At the time of delivery to the purchaser, the total lineardrying shrinkage of units shall not exceed 0.065%.6.3 Solid UnitsThe net cross-sectional area of solid units,in every
、plane parallel to the bearing surface, shall be not lessthan 75 % of the gross cross-sectional area measured in thesame plane.7. Dimensions and Permissible Variations7.1 Minimum face shell thickness shall be not less than12in. (13 mm).7.2 No overall dimension (width, height, and length) shalldiffer
、by more than 618 in. (3.2 mm) from the specifiedstandard dimensions.NOTE 4Standard dimensions of units are the manufacturers desig-nated dimensions. Nominal dimensions of modular size units are equal tothe standard dimensions plus the thickness of one mortar joint. Nominaldimensions of nonmodular si
、ze units usually exceed the standard dimen-sions by18 to14 in. (3.2 to 6.4 mm).8. Finish and Appearance8.1 All units shall be sound and free of cracks or otherdefects that interfere with the proper placement of the units orsignificantly impair the strength or permanence of the construc-tion. Minor c
、racks incidental to the usual method of manufac-ture or minor chipping resulting from customary methods ofhandling in shipment and delivery are not grounds for rejec-tion.8.2 Where units are to be used in exposed wall construction, the face or faces that are to be exposed shall not show chips orcrack

The finished surfaces that will be exposed inplace shall conform to an approved sample consisting of notless than four units, representing the range of texture and colorpermitted.8
、.4 Nonloadbearing concrete masonry units shall be clearlymarked in a manner to preclude their use as load bearing units.9. Methods of Sampling and Testing9.1 The purchaser or authorized representative shall beaccorded proper facilities to inspect and sample the units at theplace of manufacture from
、the lots ready for delivery.9.2 Sample and test units in accordance with Test MethodsC140 and Test Method C456 when applicable.9.3 Total linear drying shrinkage shall be based on tests ofconcrete masonry units made with the same materials, concretemix design, manufacturing process, and curing method
、, con-ducted in accordance with Test Method C456 not more than 24months prior to delivery.10. Compliance10.1 If a sample fails to conform to the specified require-ments, the manufacturer shall be permitted to remove unitsfrom the shipment. A new sample shall be selected by thepurchaser from remainin
、g units from the shipment with asimilar configuration and dimension and tested at the expenseof the manufacturer. If the second sample meets the specifiedrequirements, the remaining portion of the shipment repre-sented by the sample meets the specified requirements. If thesecond sample fails to meet
、 the specified requirements, theremaining portion of the shipment represented by the samplefails to meet the specified requirements.NOTE 5Unless otherwise specified in the purchase order, the cost oftests is typically borne as follows: if the results of the tests show that theunits do not conform to
、 the requirements of this specification, the cost istypically borne by the seller. If the results of the tests show that the unitsconform to the specification requirements, the cost is typically borne bythe purchaser.11.
