Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers thermoplastic e

3、lastomeric(TPE) gasket materials for preformed elastomeric gaskets usedin shielded and non-shielded mechanical couplings. Thesecouplings are used in gravity flow drain, waste and vent(DWV), sewer, sanitary and storm plumbing systems. Theyinclude couplings to join similar and dissimilar piping sizesa

4、nd material.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conf

Materials and Manufacture4.1 Gaskets shall be made of virgin thermoplastic elasto-meric compound containing only clean reworked thermoplasticelastomer material from the manufacturers own production ofthe same compound.4.2 Whe

10、re splices are made in the gasket, the strength of thesplice shall be such that the gasket will withstand the stretchtest described in 8.9 with no visible separation or peeling.4.3 Many thermoplastic elastomeric materials (TPE) aretemperature sensitive. Designed operating temperature rangefor the 87

11、 Shore A TPE materials is 0 to 130 F (18 to55C). These materials are not designed or intended forprolonged operation outside this range.5. Physical Properties5.1 Gaskets representative of the manufacturers productionshall be selected as specified in Section 7 and shall conform tothe requirements for

12、 physical properties listed in Table 1 whentested in accordance with the methods specified in Section 8.6. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance6.1 The surface of the gasket shall be smooth and free ofpitting, cracks, blisters, air marks, and any other imperfectionsthat will affect its behavior in ser

13、vice. Sampling7.1 For the stretch test specified in 8.9, sample gaskets shallbe selected at random from each shipment of gaskets. For eachof the other tests, gaskets shall be selected at random asrequired by the meth

17、od of test specified.8. Test Methods8.1 HardnessTest the gasket material for hardness inaccordance with Test Method D2240. As required, use TestMethod D1415 as the referee method. Make hardness measure-ments on specimens prepared in accordance with 8.2.However, hardness readings for guidance purpose

18、s shall betaken directly on the gasket, recognizing that these shall bepermitted to vary slightly from those taken on the dumbbellspecimens.8.2 Elongation and Tensile StrengthTest the gasket mate-rial for elongation and tensile strength in accordance with TestMethod D412. Cut standard ASTM Type C du

19、mbbell speci-mens conforming to Fig. 1 (Apparatus for Tensile Set Test) ofTest Method D412 from sections of the gasket for this test. Toobtain a uniform thickness, these sections shall be permitted tobe buffed prior to cutting into dumbbell specimens, so as toproduce a finely ground surface without

20、cuts or burns.8.3 Tear StrengthTest the gasket material for tear strengthin accordance with Test Method D624 using Die C.8.4 Compression SetTest the gasket material for compres-sion set using Test Method D395. For materials with a hardnessof 90 IRHD or higher Method A must be used. For materialswith

21、 a hardness less than 90 IRHD Method B must be used.Oven age samples for 22 h at 70 6 1C (158 6 2F). Whenusing Test Method A, there shall be a maximum dimensionalchange of 12 %. When using Test Method B, there shall be amaximum dimensional change of 25 %.8.5 Heat AgingTest the gasket material for he

22、at aging inaccordance with Test Method D573. Prepare specimens inaccordance with 8.2, and for 96 h at 70 6 2 C (158 6 4F).Make hardness measurements as specified in 8.1.8.6 Water AbsorptionTest the gasket material for weightincrease due to water absorption in accordance with TestMethod D471. If a 1

(25.4 mm) specimen cannot be cutfrom the sample gasket, use the greatest width obtainable.Immerse the test specimen in distilled water at 70 6 2C (1586 4F) for seven days.8.7 Ozone ResistanceTest the gasket material for ozoneresistance in accordance with Test Method D1149, usingspecimens and pro

24、cedure specified under Method B. The ozoneconcentration shall be 150 pphm of air by volume. Agespecimens 100 h at 40 6 2C (104 6 4F) with a 20 %extension. Use a two-power hand magnification glass toexamine the gasket8.8 Oil ImmersionTest the gasket material for volumedecrease due to oil absorption i

25、n accordance with Test MethodD471. If a 1-in. (25.4 mm) specimen cannot be cut from thesample gasket, use the greatest width obtainable. The testspecimen shall be immersed in IRM 903 oil for 70 h at 100 62C (212 6 4F).8.9 Stretch Test for Spliced GasketsStretch gaskets untilthe circumference is incr

26、eased by 50 %, then visually inspectfor defects as described in 4.2 and 6.1. One percent of the totalspliced gaskets shall be tested with no failures.9. Certification9.1 When specified in the purchase order or contract, thepurchaser shall be furnished certification stating samples rep-resenting each

27、 lot have been tested and inspected as indicatedin this specification and the requirements have been met. Whenspecified in the purchase order or contract, a report of the testresults shall be furnished.10. Marking10.1 Each gasket shall be permanently marked with clearlylegible letters. These marking
