TEST METHOD FOR LOW-TEMPERATURE BRITTLENESS OF RUBBER AND RUBBER-LIKE MATERIALS3X1.1. Sc

、opeX1.1.1 This test method is intended to determine the abilityof compounds made from rubber or rubber-like materials toresist the effect of low temperatures that may cause them tobecome brittle and fracture or crack when bent. Standardspecimens are exposed to specified low temperatures fordefinite

、periods after which the specimens are bent in aprescribed manner and any fracture or cracking noted. Theprocedure is commonly called the “Thiokol” method.NOTE X1.1Results obtained by this test method are influenced by therate of flexing of the cooled specimens which can not be closely controlledin t

、he prescribed apparatus. They are therefore of a qualitative nature andmay not be closely reproducible over a range of several degrees oftemperature depending on the speed of flexure. For more accuratedetermination of brittle temperature, and particularly in newC509 06 (2015)3specifications, Test Me

、thod D746 is recommended.X1.2. ApparatusX1.2.1 Cold Chamber, of sufficient size to contain theflexing fixture when loaded with specimens, and so arranged asto permit the operation of the fixture to bend to specimenswithout removal from the chamber. It shall be capable ofmaintaining within it a unifo

、rm atmosphere of cold, dry air ora mixture of air and carbon dioxide at specified temperatureswithin a tolerance of 61C (2F).NOTE X1.2Temperatures of 40C (40F) and 55C (67F) arecommonly used.X1.2.2 Flexing Fixture, consisting of two parallel plateseach having a width of at least 50.8 mm (2 in.) so s

、upported inguides that they may be rapidly moved from a position63.5 mm (212 in.) apart until they are separated by a distanceof 25.4 mm (1 in.). Suitable clamping bars or devices shall beprovided for holding the ends of the specimens for a distanceof 6.4 mm (14 in.) at the corresponding edge of eac

、h plate sothat when mounted, the specimens form similar bent loopsbetween the plates. A satisfactory flexing fixture is shown inFig. X1.1.X1.3. Test SpecimensX1.3.1 The test specimens shall conform in shape to Die Cas specified in Test Methods D412 and shall have a thicknessof 2.032 6 0.254 mm (0.08

、0 6 0.010 in.).X1.3.2 At least two specimens from each compound shallbe tested.X1.4. ProcedureX1.4.1 Mount the test specimens in loop position betweenthe plates of the flexing fixture with the enlarged ends spacedat least 3.2 mm (18 in.) apart and held in the clamps for adistance of 6.4 mm (14 in.).

、 With the plates in the open positionseparated 63.5 mm (212 in.), place the fixture containing thespecimens in the cold chamber and expose it for the specifiedperiod to cold, dry air or a mixture of air and carbon dioxide atthe specified temperature. The standard exposure period shallbe5h(Note X1.3)

、. At the termination of the exposure periodand while still in the cold chamber, move the plates of theflexing fixture as rapidly as possible from the 63.5-mm(212-in.) distance of separation to a position where they are25.4 mm (1 in.) apart. Then examine the specimens for fractureor visible cracks.NO

、TE X1.3Previously two periods were specified, 96 h for natural-rubber compounds and 5 h for synthetic-rubber compounds. It was foundthat5hisadequate for either class of compounds within the intent of thistest method.X1.5 ResultsX1.5.1 When two specimens are tested and neither onefractures nor shows

、cracks after being tested, the compoundshall be considered as having passed the brittleness test. If bothspecimens crack, the compound shall be considered to havefailed.X1.5.2 If only one specimen fractures or cracks, the result isinconclusive and two additional specimens shall be tested. Ifeither o
