Now, were not trying to intimate that the college is not safe; in fact, because of its safe environment, many students dont think ab

18、out this happening to them. Throughout the year, Campus Safety Office receives complaints of book theft, especially at the beginning and end of the semester and around the holidays. On behalf of the CSO I want to warn you about the textbook theft and offer some tips to prevent and cope with this dan

19、ger. 1Why do people steal your textbooks? 2They make attractive targets for thieves. The cost of textbooks is one of the major expenses of attending a university. The average student spends 300-400 dollars per semester on textbooks. Textbooks often are left unattended in public areas; 3textbooks can

20、 be easily resold; textbooks are increasing in value; and often, owners cannot be identified. Here are several tips that will reduce your chances of being a victim of book theft. 4The most effective way to stop a person from selling a book back or accuse a person of stealing your book is to see if y

21、ou mark your text book. Thieves find it more difficult to dispose of stolen articles that can be traced through an owner making identification marks. There are some ways to mark your textbooks. 5One, print your full name on the inside cover of each textbook. 6Two, print the current school year and s

22、emester under your name. 7Three, print an identifiable number that you can remember on a specific page with your own initials on the corresponding page, and keep a record of it. Mark the corresponding page with your own initials, that is, the first words of your name. This way, if the book is stolen

23、, both the police and the bookstores will have a better chance of tracing the book once it is sold back. If caught with a marked item, the thief can be convicted. The marked items can also be returned to the rightful owner. 8However, for the sake of safety, do not use your social security number, st

24、udent ID number, or birth date to mark your textbook! In addition, never leave your possessions unattended in public places. Remember, the majority of thefts on campus are thefts of opportunity. Most items are stolen because they are left unattended. 9Make a list of your textbooks and include the na

25、me of the book, type of book, the author, and any identifying marks to help Campus Safety Office in the recovery of the lost or stolen book(s). 10If once you became a victim, do report the textbook theft immediately to Campus Safety Office and to the campus bookstore.
