Significance and Use4.1 Insulations that are used as a part of the thermalinsulation system in contact with austenitic stainless steelshave the potential to become contaminated with wate
、r solublecorrosive ions which, in turn, if permitted to reach the stainlesssteel surface, are possible to contribute to external stresscorrosion cracking (ESCC). Therefore, it is important to reducethe exposure of such insulating materials to water-solublecorrosive ion compounds at all stages of man
、ufacture, handling, shipping, storage, and application. Duringmanufacture, precautions shall be taken to minimize watersoluble corrosive ion content, both in the material and assurface contamination. Once the manufacture is complete, caremust be exercised during handling, transporting, shipping, stora
、ge, receiving, and application to avoid contamination withcorrosive ions that can be transported by water through theinsulation materials onto the stainless steel surface. Thispractice presents criteria which, if followed, will minimize therisks of ESCC associated with the application of insulationm

It must be emphasized, however, that because of themany variable factors present, complete freedom from ESCCcan not be assured under all circumstances, even when follow-ing the guidance of this practice.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C16 on ThermalInsulation and

、959. United States14.2 Continued protection of the insulation and the stainlesssteel surface from moisture and contamination after the insu-lation system is installed and over its entire service life is ofsignificant importance. In-service contamination has the poten-tial to occur from many sources;
、 for example, from airbornecontaminates, rain or salt spray, periodic fire sprinkler systemtests, wash-downs, or process leakage. Weather barrier jacket-ing systems and proper application shall be chosen to providelong-term protection in the intended use environment.4.3 The entire insulation system
、shall be periodically in-spected and maintained. Insulation that is suspected of con-tamination shall be retested or immediately replaced. Washdown of insulated pipe and equipment shall be avoided.Whenever possible, protective coatings or finishes shall beapplied directly to the stainless steel surf

Where conditions make itnecessary to have both qualified and unqualified materials ofthe same type at the job site, storage area, or in the sameshipment, all qualified materials must be clearly identifiablefrom unqualified materials. The need for special identificat

Handling, Transporting, and Shipping6.1 All handling and transporting of materials shall be donein a manner that will prevent contamination from externalsources.6.2 Shipment of materials from the manufacturer to theinstallation location of the
、user shall be in weathertighttransportation. Provisions and responsibility for special trans-portation or packaging shall be agreed upon between thepurchaser and the seller or manufacturer.7. Storage7.1 All insulation shall be stored in a manner that willprevent contamination from external sources.7
、.2 All insulation and accessory materials shall be stored inweathertight buildings. Storage buildings shall be situated andconstructed so that they will not be subject to flooding. Thefloor shall be paved, or equal, and welldrained.7.3 Insulation shall be placed on non-contaminated palletsor shoring
、 to prevent direction contact with the ground or floor.7.4 If qualified and unqualified materials are stored in thesame area, they must be segregated.8. Inspection8.1 Insulation and accessory materials shall be inspected atvarious stages prior to application to further reduce the risk ofcontaminatio
、n. Retesting is permitted in a particularly criticalapplication such as pressure vessels, or when contamination issuspected by visual examination.8.1.1 External shipping containers, packages, or cartonsshall be visually inspected for evidence of water damage orcontamination when received at the jobs
、ite, when removedfrom storage, and just prior to application. Any containersshowing evidence of water damage or contamination shall notbe used. They will be clearly marked and set aside for furtherinspection, testing, disposal, or used as unqualified material.8.1.2 Documentation shall be supplied to
、 show that thematerials have met the requirements of Specification C795.9. Application Precautions9.1 Although this practice will help to prevent stress corro-sion cracking of austenitic stainless steel surfaces, it shall benoted that the cleanliness of the surface to which it is appliedis of equal
、importance. Stainless steel surfaces have thepotential to be contaminated from external sources, such asairborne sea mist carried by onshore winds, chemical fumes, ink from marking pens, adhesive on tape, accidental spills ofwater-soluble corrosive ion-bearing materials, melting saltsused to clear ic
、e and snow, and many other ways. Thecontaminant shall be removed from the surface before insula-tion is applied and precautions shall be taken to prevent theirentrance during and after the installation.9.2 Any material suspected of being contaminated duringthe application must not be used and shall
、be clearly markedand set aside for further testing, disposal, or used as unqualifiedmaterial.9.3 When insulating cements (for example, SpecificationsC195 or C449) are to be in contact with austenitic stainlesssteel surfaces, they shall be mixed with distilled or deminer-alized water only.9.4 Mixing
、containers and tools must be thoroughly cleanedand dried prior to use so as not to increase the corrosive ioncontent of the material . Used containers, such as mortar boxesor empty paint or mastic pails, shall not be used as mixingcontainers.10. Material Control Procedures10.1 Specific material cont
