Scope1.1 This test method covers a laboratory procedure forsimulating in 2 weeks the settling that might occur in traffi

3、cpaint during approximately 12 months normal storage.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. 5、ttling ofPaint3. Significance and Use3.1 Paints, if not formulated or processed properly, or both,may settle excessively. This test method is an attempt tosimulate the conditions that would accelerate settling of thepigment in order to evaluate settling properties within 2 weeks.The variables of thi

6、s test method in conjunction with the verysubjective method of evaluating the degree of settling (TestMethod D 869) raise questions as to the usefulness of theresults for specification compliance.4. Apparatus4.1 ContainerStandard 500-mL (1-pt), friction top canpaint container 85.5 6 1.5 mm (338 6116

7、 in.) in diameter and98.5 6 1.5 mm (378 6116 in.) in height.4.2 Spatula, weighing 45 6 1 g with square-end blade 125mm (434 in.) in length and approximately 20 mm (1316 in.) inwidth. A suitable spatula may be prepared by cutting the tipfrom an ordinary 125-mm (5-in.) flexible steel laboratoryspatula

8、 to the specified length.4.3 Freezer, maintained at from 21 to 23.3C ( 5 to 10F).4.4 Oven, maintained at 71 6 1C (160 6 2F).4.5 Lid Clips.5. Procedure5.1 Thoroughly mix the paint to be evaluated to a homoge-neous consistency. Transfer enough of the paint to a 500-mL(1-pt) paint can to fill it to wit

9、hin 13 mm (12 in.) of the top.Close the can tightly, securing the lid with four clips, andsubject it to the following exposure cycle.5.1.1 Monday through Friday:5.1.1.1 Place in freezer at 8:00 a.m.5.1.1.2 Transfer to oven at 10:00 a.m.5.1.1.3 Transfer to freezer at 2:00 p.m.5.1.1.4 Transfer to oven

10、 at 4:00 p.m.5.1.2 From 4:00 p.m. Friday until 8:00 a.m. Monday:5.1.2.1 Place in the oven at 4:00 p.m. Friday.5.1.2.2 At 8:00 a.m. Monday morning, after the can hasbeen in the oven over a weekend, place it in the freezer andcontinue the cycles described above for another 7 days. Eachtime the can of

11、paint is removed from the oven give it onesharp “spank” on the table top. The spank consists of a shortrapid jar of the bottom of the can of paint against the top of thetable. The violence of the jar is such that if the bottom of thecan of paint were spanked against the platform of a scaleinstead of

12、 a table top the scale would register approximately2.27 kg (5 lb) weight.5.2 At the completion of the exposure, allow the paint tocool at room temperature for 4 h and determine the degree ofsettling in accordance with Test Method D 869.NOTE 1Open cans slowly and carefully to allow release of residua
