、Designation: D1779 98 (Reapproved 2017)Standard Specification forAdhesive for Acoustical Materials1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D1779; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision

、. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers an adhesive for bon

、ding pre-fabricated acoustical materials to the inside walls and ceilingsof rooms in buildings. This adhesive is required to maintain atensile adhesion (bond strength) of not less than 3.45 104dynes/cm2(12 lb/in.2) for a long period of time under thetemperature and moisture conditions likely to be e

、ncounteredand to maintain sufficient plasticity to allow for movement ofparts of the building as it ages.NOTE 1Cleanliness of SurfaceThe surface to which the acousticalmaterial is applied with the adhesive should be clean, sound, and dry.Surface coatings should be removed if their nature indicates a

、n unsatis-factory installation, so that the adhesive can be applied to the base. Whenthe adhesive is to be applied on a painted surface, test tile should beapplied for 48 h to determine suitable adherence of the coating byexamination. Acoustical adhesives are not intended to be applied tosurfaces th

、at are moist and that have an alkaline reaction, or that may laterbecome moist or alkaline. Such surfaces, as concrete or plaster, should beproperly dried and aged before applying the adhesive.NOTE 2LoadThis adhesive is not recommended as a sole means ofholding acoustical materials weighing more tha

、n 121 kg/m2(212 lb/ft2)toceiling surfaces.NOTE 3Amount and Condition of MaterialIt is recommended thatsufficient adhesive be used so that there is a contact surface of not less than1.2104cm2/m2(20 in.2/ft2) of acoustical material, with a minimumthickness of 0.3 cm (18 in.) and that the adhesive be a

、pplied in fourseparate nearly spherical portions of approximately equal size near thecorners for a standard 30.5 by 30.5-cm (12 by 12-in.) tile. Fewer than ormore than four portions for 30.5 by 30.5-cm tile are not recommended dueto difficulty in leveling and in securing effective contact area on al

、lportions.Adhesives that are hard, or do not wet the surface, or are difficultto spread should not be used.NOTE 4Rigidity of Base SurfacesIt is necessary that the materialforming the base to which the adhesive is attached should be relativelysmooth, firm, and rigid. If the pressure of applying tile

、and adhesivecauses the base material to deflect excessively, tile previously applied mayhave their adhesive bond broken. This occurs on some types of gypsumboard suspension systems.NOTE 5AgingTo date, no accelerated aging tests for adhesives havebeen developed to duplicate exactly aging in service.

、The aging tests inthis specification are designed to accelerate the aging process and to testvarious manifestations of aging, and are intended to be satisfactory forcomparing one adhesive with another; they do not necessarily reflect agingcharacteristics on an absolute basis. Purchasers of adhesives

、 shouldreceive from the manufacturer additional warranties and assurances ofperformance of the adhesive under normal aging.NOTE 6Erection PracticesProper erection techniques are essentialfor proper performance of any acoustical adhesive. Use of a materialmeeting this specification will not in itself

、 guarantee satisfactory perfor-mance. Only when tiles are applied by skilled and experienced workersfollowing instructions from the manufacturer can the purchaser be assuredof satisfactory performance of an adhesive.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values give

It must be free from all ingredients that will affect theserviceability of the adhesive or have a deleterious e

、ffect on theacoustical material or the surface to which the acousticalmaterial is attached.4.2 ToxicityThe adhesive must not liberate toxic gases orfumes under normal conditions of use and application, norshall it contain irritating substances. The adhesive must containno more than 0.5 % of benzene

、or volatile chlorinated hydro-carbon solvent.4.3 WorkmanshipThe ingredients and processes used mustbe an adhesive for acoustical materials meeting the require-ments of this specification.5. Detail Requirements5.1 ConsistencyThe initial consistency of the adhesivemust adhere to the surfaces being bon

、ded, spread or be capableof being applied readily, and not sag from walls or drop fromceilings.5.2 WettingThe adhesive must wet completely the sur-faces being bonded.5.3 StrengthThe tensile-adhesion specimens preparedwith the adhesive must not fail under the stress conditionsgiven in the test method

、s (7.1.3).5.4 ShrinkageThe shrinkage in volume must not exceed15 % when conditioned at 49 6 2C (120 6 3.6F) for 30 days.5.5 CrackingThere must be no evidence of cracking at theexposed surface or at the interface of the glass plate and theacoustical adhesive when aged in air at 49 6 2C (120 63.6F) fo

、r 7 days. The adhesive must retain sufficient plasticityto permit indentation by a fingernail.5.6 Migration or Bleeding TestThe vehicle must not passthrough a medium-textured filter paper when tested and con-ditioned at 49 6 2C (120 6 3.6F) for 28 days.5.7 StorageThe adhesive when subjected to the s

、toragetests in 7.1.7 must not change appreciably in volume orconsistency or segregate in such a manner that it cannot berestored readily by hand mixing. It must have substantially thesame working qualities as another sample of the same adhesiveof recent manufacture.6. Sampling6.1 Take a sample of no

、t less than 0.980 kg (2 lb) from eachshipment or consignment for analysis and tests. Except inspecial cases, the sample must be a composite taken whenpossible from three or more separate containers, chosen atrandom. Samples must also be taken from containers thatappear to be nonrepresentative, and s

、uch samples must betested separately. Place the samples immediately in airtightcontainers and transport them to the testing laboratory in thesecontainers. Precautions must be taken to reduce evaporation ordrying to a minimum. The adhesive in the can must bethoroughly mixed if there is a tendency for

、 the materials toseparate on standing.7. Test Methods7.1 Determine the properties enumerated in this specifica-tion in accordance with the following test methods:7.1.1 ConsistencyDetermine the consistency of the adhe-sive as received by applying the material to plywood andgypsum board surfaces by ha

、nd tools at 20 to 30C (68 to86F). The adhesive must spread readily, trowel smoothlywithout drag, adhere to the surfaces, and not sag from walls ordrop from ceilings when applied in a thickness of approxi-mately 0.9 cm (38 in.).7.1.2 WettingPlace a fresh portion of the adhesive ap-proximately 2.54 cm

、 (1 in.) thick at a temperature of 20 to30C (68 to 86F) on clean surfaces of plywood and of gypsumboard. Press the adhesive immediately with a flat hand toolsuch as a trowel or putty knife to a thickness of about 0.6 cm(14 in.). Immediately thereafter withdraw the hand tool verti-cally without slidi
