1、Designation: D609 00 (Reapproved 2012)Standard Practice forPreparation of Cold-Rolled Steel Panels for Testing Paint,Varnish, Conversion Coatings, and Related CoatingProducts1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D609; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year

2、 oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Departmen

3、t of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This practice covers various types of cold rolled steelpanels and the procedures to be followed in their preparationfor testing paint, varnish, lacquer, conversion coatings, andrelated products.1.2 The procedures are as follows:Procedure AConversion coatings (phosphates, chr

4、omates,etc.)Procedure BVapor degreasingProcedure CSolvent brushingProcedure DSolvent wipingProcedure EAlkaline cleaning1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.4 This standard does not purport to address the safety

Summary of Practice3.1 Several procedures fo

Significance and Use4.1 The procedures described in this practice are designed toprovide steel panels with a uniform and reproducible surfacefor testing of paint, varnish, lacquer, conversion coatings, andrelated pro

Thepanels shall be made to a size and thickness as agreed uponbetween the purchaser and seller. Edges shall be smooth andcorners rounded. The steel may have been coa

9、ted at the millwith a suitable rust preventive compound for protection duringshipment and storage. However, long-term steel storage withoil on the surface may cause an oil/steel reaction known as oilstain. Since such stains inhibit chemical bonding, the steelselected for panels shall be free of oil

10、stain and other visibleprocessing variation caused by pickling or annealing.5.2 Type 1 steel has a matte finish produced by steel millrolls that have been grit blasted. This finish is typical ofcold-rolled steel used for painted surfaces on automobiles, appliances, etc. Such surfaces can be partially

11、 characterized bymeasuring the average peak-to-valley distance and the numberof peaks per unit area. However, conversion coating and paintperformance on such surfaces may vary because of differentoxidation, annealing procedures, and surface conditions.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM

Flat-polishedpanels are not representative of the surface on which mostcoatings are applied, because polishing significantly improvesthe corrosion resistance per

To ensure completeremoval of surface contaminants, the original surface shall becompletely removed as determined by visual inspection; in anycase, a minimum of 7.5 m (0.3 mils) of surface shall beremoved. Care must be u

Methods of Preparation6.1 After preparation, the surface of the panel should bewater-break free, which is determined by immersing a repre-sen

The watershould form a continuous unbroken film over the entiresurface, without beading up into droplets or other water-breaks.6.2 Procedure A: Conversion CoatingsConversion coat-ings such as phosphates or chromates are available from anumber of sources a

Preparation of test panels may consist of one or moresteps of cleaning, rinsing, or conditioning prior to the applica-tion of the con

Additional rinsing with waterwill usually be required after the conversion coating is applied. To prevent rust, force dry immediately after rinsing.6.3 Procedure B: Vapor DegreasingSuspend the panels ina vapor-phase type degreaser containing stabilized 1,1,1-trichloroethane and allow

22、 them to remain above the boilingsolvent. When the panels attain vapor temperature, condensa-tion of vapor onto the panels no longer occurs. Prewiping witha clean, lintless cloth saturated with mineral spirits may benecessary, since vapor degreasing generally does not removesolid particulate matter

26、Clean the panels with an alkalinesolution or cleaner applied by spray or immersion. Brush orwipe in accordance with the recommendations of the cleanermanufacturer. One or more steps of rinsing with water will berequired after this procedure of cleaning. To prevent rust, forcedry immediately after ri

Protection After Preparation7.1 To prevent rust, wrap panels that are not to be usedimmediately after preparation, in a paper impregnated withdicyclohexylammonium nitrite, or an equivalent volatile cor-rosion inhibitor (VCI), and place in a plastic bag or envelope.7.1.1 Bare steel panels us

The VCI residue can generally be removed by wiping thepanel several times with a clean, lint-free cloth wetted withwarm distilled water.4Its important to dry the panel thor-oughly immediately after w

Forcritical tests, the operator can verify the presence and effect ofVCI residue by testing a representative paint on both a panelwiped with water and on a panel straight out of the VCI wrap.Wiping with water is not recommended for phosphated panels, because of the diffic
