、Designation: D 3139 98 (Reapproved 2005)An American National StandardStandard Specification forJoints for Plastic Pressure Pipes Using Flexible ElastomericSeals1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 3139; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal

、adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defens

、e.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers the types of joints required forplastic pipe pressure systems with a wall thickness equal to orgreater than that of SDR 64 and intended for use in supply anddistribution lines for water, using flexible elastomeric seals. This specification covers the test requi

、rements, test method, and materials. The test methods described are not intended tobe routine quality control tests, but are to evaluate theperformance characteristics of the joint.1.2 The text of this specification references notes, footnotes, and appendixes which provide explanatory material. Thesen

、otes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shallnot be considered as requirements of the specification.1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains to the testmethod portion, Section 6, of this specification: This standarddoes not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if

、 any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of thisstandard to establish appropriate safety and health practicesand determine the applicability of regulatory limitations priorto use.2. 8、emComponents-Health Effects43. Terminology3.1 DefinitionsThis specification covers two types ofmechanical joints based on effecting water tightness throughcompression of an elastomeric seal or ring:3.1.1 mechanical jointa joint in which a positive seal isachieved when a gasket is compressed by means

、 of a mechani-cal device.3.1.2 push-on-jointa joint in which a continuous elasto-meric ring gasket is compressed into an annular space formedby the pipe or fitting socket and the spigot end of the pipe, andforms a positive seal after being assembled. Details of the jointdesign and assembly shall be

、in accordance with the manufac-turers instructions.4. Materials and Manufacture4.1 The materials used in elastomeric seals shall meet therequirements of Specification F 477.4.2 LubricantThe lubricant shall be nontoxic and shallhave no deteriorating effects on the gasket and pipe materials. It shall n

、ot impart taste or odor to water in a pipe that has beenflushed in accordance with AWWA C 651. When used in apotable water system, the lubricant shall meet the requirementsofANSI/NSF Standard No. 61. The lubricant container shall belabeled with the manufacturers trademark or the pipe manu-facturers

、name.5. Performance Requirements5.1 The joint shall be designed to provide a permanent sealand shall be qualified in accordance with Section 8.5.1.1 All surfaces of the joint upon or against which thegasket may bear shall be free of imperfections that couldadversely affect the performance of the joi

、nt.5.2 Pressure RatingDesigns not meeting the requirementsof 6.2 shall be tested to verify that the hydrostatic design basiscategory for joint assemblies shall not be lower than thehydrostatic design basis category for pipe when tested under1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Commi

If the wall is not sufficient to withstand the com-pressive force, then a rigid tubu

、lar internal stiffener shall beused in conjunction with compressive-type mechanical jointfittings. A stiffener specified by the manufacturer for thispurpose shall be used.5.4 Joint DeflectionThe joint shall provide a seal whenthe pipe spigot is deflected axially in the socket to themaximum unstresse

Dimensions, Mass, and Permissible Variations6.1 Joint Dimensions and Tolerances The dimensions ofthe bell, socket, and plain end shall be in accordance with themanufacturers standard design dimensions of the joint.6.2 Push-On J

、ointThe minimum wall thickness of thebell at any point between the ring groove (annular gasketspace) and the pipe barrel, shall conform to the dimension ratiorequirements for the pipe barrel. The minimum wall thicknessin the sealing portion of the ring groove and bell entry sectionsshall equal or ex

、ceed the minimum wall thickness requirementsof the pipe barrel (see Fig. 1 or Fig. 2).6.3 Gasket DimensionsGasket dimensions shall be inaccordance with the manufacturers standard design dimen-sions and tolerances. The gasket shall be of such size and shapeas to provide an adequate compressive force

、against the spigotand socket after assembly to effect a positive seal under allcombinations of permitted joint and gasket tolerances. Thegasket shall be the sole element depended upon to make thejoint flexible and water tight. The gasket shall be a continuouselastomeric ring.7. Workmanship, Finish,

、and Appearance7.1 The manufacturer of these joints shall produce jointsmeeting the requirements of this specification. Components ofthe joints shall be homogenous throughout and free fromvisible cracks, holes, foreign inclusions, or injurious defects. The components of the joints shall be as uniform

、as commer-cially practicable in color, opacity, density, and other physicalproperties.8. Test Methods8.1 The assembled joints shall pass the following laboratoryqualifying tests. (For referee testing, standard laboratory con-ditions of 73F and 50 % relative humidity will apply.)8.1.1 Internal Pressu

、re TestingLaboratory hydrostaticpressure tests on joints shall be made on an assembly of twoFIG. 1 Relationship of Dimensions in 6.2FIG. 2 Relationship of Dimensions in 6.2D 3139 98 (2005)2sections of pipe properly connected in accordance with thejoint design and deflected to the limit defined in 5.

、4.Nocoatings, fillings, or packings, other than lubricants recom-mended in 4.2, shall be placed prior to water tightness tests. After the pipe sections are fitted together with the gasket orgaskets in place, the assembly shall be subjected to separateinternal pressure tests, first at 50 % of rated pr

Thepressure shall then be continuously increased to the minimumshort-term rupture requirement of the applicable pipe withoutleakage. The pressure increase from 212 tim

、es rated tominimum short-term rupture requirement shall occur over a 60to 70-s period.8.1.2 Vacuum TestThe assembled joint shall withstand avacuum of 75-kPa gage (22 in. 31、results of any test(s) do not meet the requirementsof this specification, the test(s) shall be conducted again onlyby agreement between the purchaser and the seller. Under suchagreement, minimum requirements shall not be lowered, nortests omitted, substituted, changed, or modified, nor shallspecific

、ation limits be changed. If upon retest, failure occurs, the quantity of product represented by the test(s) does not meetthe requirements of this specification.10.
